Customer Review: Caution: These are not "bookshelf" speakers

I purchased these as a putative part of a mini bedroom set for casual but high-fidelity listening. I have to agree with an earlier reviewer that these are extremely analytical, harsh speakers that provide very little enjoyment or musicality. It is true that you really want to shut them off after a while because they offer NOTHING in terms of life or lushness or inspiration or whatever you like to call the "It" factor for good speakers.
The reason, in small part? I had them on paradigm speaker stands. There's the rub. These speakers are tuned for desktop listening. The require the mass and resonance provided by a desk or heavy furniture for weight and body and, accordingly, musicality. When I placed them on my dresser I began to understand the reviews, although even then I would never, ever describe these as audiophile-level monitors by any stretch.
So, if you have a high-end system and think these will do as a secondary mini-system, be forewarned. These are not for musical enjoyment. And they are grossly, grossly overrated.
Casual bedroom sound for under a grand? Stick with the Bowers Zeppelin running from a wireless system. You won't get the imaging of a stereo system, but at least you will get some depth and emotion.
