Customer Review: ipod speakers
Summary: 4 Stars

We are very pleased with our new speakers. I won't say that they have the highest sound quality but they are quite sufficient for our purposes.

Customer Review: Tweeter on one speaker doesn't work
Summary: 3 Stars

Writing this review is bittersweet. The speakers look nice and have a quality feel to them. Unfortunately, the tweeter in the speaker without the amplifier doesn't work. Bummer.

Despite the defective speaker, I have been listening to them for a couple hours. Even with the defective tweeter, they are comfortable to listen to and seem to image well. My everyday listening system includes a couple Vandersteen 2CEs, OCM power amp, Citation 7.0 prepro, Velodyne ULD18 and a decent Marantz CD transport. Not my audiophile system but a very good reference system. I don't like bright but love detail. These AE 5s sound good, I mean really good. [...]..

Customer Review: They live up to the hype - but two flaws...
Summary: 5 Stars

I've lived with the Audioengine 5's for half a year now and I am very pleased with their quality. They sound great with a diverse range of music, though they seem to really love jazz. They also sound excellent with movies and television, though obviously they are not designed for a 5.1 experience.

The two flaws are small, but worth mentioning. The first is that I was surprised how easily the surface became scratched on them. Obviously this does not affect the sound, but I would have expected the surface to be a little tougher.

The second flaw is that, in my circumstance, they pick up interference from passing ambulances. Their radios, I presume, cause a brief buzz as the ambulance goes by. This is noticeable since I live on a busy street near a hospital. It's also worth noting that frequently the sirens are blaring which means the small, short buzz is hardly the biggest issue with my listening pleasure.

I should also say that I called AudioEngine about this second issue and the gentleman I spoke with couldn't have been nicer or more willing to consider solutions.

Overall I am very pleased.

On a final note, I do find they tend to sound better after they have been playing for a half hour or so. At least, it seems to to me.

Customer Review: Excellent speakers
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been listening to these for a week and they have exceeded my expectations!

Currently, I have them connected to my computer and I rarely turn the volume up past 1/4 of the way. At this level, the sound completely fills the room. I now hear my music the way that it was ment to be listened to. The only trouble is that now all of the music that I have with a poor bit rate does not sound as good as playing it from the CDs! I am no longer satisfied with playing low-quality internet radio either!
I have not been able to turn the volume past 1/2 way because it is just so loud, but wow it is clear and has not a hint of distortion!

I am extremely satisfied with these speakers and I know I will get many years of enjoyment out of them.

Some other thoughts:

-While listening to these speakers, you may have trouble determining if the sounds you hear are coming from the speakers, or from outside your window!

-If the speakers are left on for about 15 minutes with no sound, they go into a power-saver mode. When this happens there is a brief audible sound that comes from the speakers which can startle you if you are not expecting it.

-During continued use, the back of the left speaker gets pretty warm to the touch, although it does not get burning hot.

-My speakers sounded noticeably better after the initial several hours of listening to them. I think they need a brief break-in period to sound their best.

-There is one 1/8 input on the top and one 1/8 input on the back of the left speaker. There are no RCA inputs (although they do come with an RCA to 1/8 adapter cable).

-If I have both my computer and my TV plugged into each of the inputs at the same time, I get feedback even though the speakers are only getting audio from one source at a time.

-If there is a GSM phone nearby (such as the iPhone) you will head interference through the A5s if the phone is getting an incoming call or text message.

-Unfortunately like most of the things that we buy, they are made in China.

Customer Review: Excellent for computer sound, if a little bit overkill
Summary: 5 Stars

I was shopping for some new speakers for my computer after the left front channel on my old Logitech 5.1 system died. I decided to look into a dual speaker solution for my new speakers, with the possibility of adding a subwoofer if necessary at a later date.

After some research I decided on Audioengine, but waffled back and forth between the Audioengine 5 and the Audioengine 2. I ended up getting the 5 series because I was worried that the 2 series wouldn't have enough volume. I suspect now that wouldn't have been the case, as these are barely turned up while running my computer audio. Not that too much i8s a problem, but they could easily function as main speakers for a home audio system, overkill for an average computer setup. Also the 5 series do eat up a chunk of desktop, a consideration for those with smaller desks.

The fit and finish is excellent, and the units are solidly built. The iPod connector is wasted on my current setup, but did function as advertised. They would be excellent as a standalone speaker setup for an iPod. The speakers were triple boxed, and had a seal that indicated that they had been inspected at some point, either by the retailer or at the factory.

While I'm not a true audiophile, I think the sound quality is comparable with the Paradigm mains I have for my HDTV sound setup. It's been awhile, but they compare favorably with my memory of reference speakers used in television production.

You won't go wrong buying these for any sound chore around your home, they provide great sound for the price.
