Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Audiovox XMB-10 XM Boom Box for Xpress XM7 Satellite Radio ReceiverCustomer Review: Only good outdoors or near a window. Summary: 3 StarsI have no complaints about the sound quality of this product. It is the size of a standard boom box, about 19" long and 9" high and attractive. I simply have no use for it, because it is a bit unwieldy to set up. It accepts batteries or I can plug it in the outlet. When I plug it in the outlet, I end up with wires everywhere. Why? It has an antenna which needs to see the sky. Which means, if I'm not near a window or outside, the radio doesn't have reception. If I have it on my desk, then I need to run this extra long antenna wire across my room.
I really think of boom boxes as being portable, go anywhere music players -- pick up and set it down and it plays. This one is pick it up and a tangled mess of wires and make sure to be near a window. If you're camping, I guess this would be great. The only time I've had to use this was the 20 minutes or so my radio needed to be on while getting the subscription set up. I didn't want to have my car on for that.
Maybe it is not the fault of the boom box as maybe technology is not advanced enough to get around the fact that the satellite radio reception needs a view of the sky and maybe that cannot be done wirelessly. I dunno. Just be forewarned. It is not a clean setup.
