Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Atlantic Onyx 1332 65 DVD/Games Tower (Matte Black Steel)Customer Review: Gets the job done, but you could do better Summary: 3 Stars
Let's start with the construction. It took me A LOT longer than it should have, and there are only 3 pieces. There's a top section to the tower, a lower section, and the base, and for the life of me I could NOT get the lower section to fit into the base. I easily spent 10 or 15 minutes on that one step, and what I finally had to do was stretch the lower section to fit these 4 rods into the base. Yes, I actually had to bend the metal a little bit. It was difficult to the point that for a while I thought they sent me the base to another unit (I'm still not convinced that all the parts I received were meant to go together). As some people have mentioned, you won't run into this problem if you mount the whole thing on the wall, since you won't need the base at all in that case. But I live in an apartment, and you need screws AND anchors to mount this thing (which they provide at least) and I didn't feel like putting holes that big into the walls.
As someone else also mentioned, the tower is rather wobbly if you choose to have it be free-standing. After I put it together, I was looking at it and I realized it wasn't standing straight up. I'd say it stands at 80 or 85 degrees to the floor (rather than the preferred 90 degrees).
My other qualm with this product is if you have any DVDs that have that thin cardboard sleeve around the plastic DVD case, it's going to be really hard to get it into this thing. The slots were apparently not meant for DVDs with sleeves, even though it seems like they are rather prevalent these days. I happen to own a copy of the Bond movie Die Another Day (before you judge me, it was a gift, OK) and I had to literally jam it into one of the slots to make it fit. I was about as close as I could be to just throwing my Atlantic Onyx 65 DVD Tower and the copy of Die Another Day off my 11th floor balcony. I don't think I'll ever be able to extract said DVD from its slot in the tower, but I don't see that being a problem.
So, in summary, this is not a COMPLETELY defective product - it does a borderline acceptable job at holding most DVDs and games, and if you are planning on mounting it on the wall this might fit your needs just fine. But there are other things like this that you can buy, so if you are considering this particular model, you might want to consider something else. If I were less lazy and more patient I would have probably sent this back and gotten something else. I give it 3 stars instead of 2 because mounting it on the wall would probably mitigate most of its major shortfalls.
