Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Atlantic Drawbridge DRA280MM03 280 CD/112 DVD/BluRay/Games Wood Cabinet (Black)Customer Review: works fine with a little modification Summary: 3 Stars
I bought two of these. Both of them came with screws that were far too small to hold the pieces together so I had to go to my parts drawer and get some real screws (#6 1-1/4" worked fine). All the parts on both units fit together well (although one of the units definitely had better quality-control than the other) and it only took about 10 minutes to assemble each of them. I did use the glue generously on the wood pegs and at each end of the uprights. You need to use the glue if you don't want it to wiggle.
I read about the trouble people were having with the shelves falling down and I think it's because the sides can bow outward easily. I overcame that by installing a screw at the mid-point of each upright on the back side, and then tying the two screws together with a piece of picture hanging wire across the back of the unit. Now the sides can't bow out.
With the modifications, the shelf is very sturdy. I had all of the stuff lying around so it didn't add any cost, and it added an extra 10 minutes to the set-up time.
It's definitely not a showy unit, but it's fine for the price. Anything this cheap is going to have issues, but some of them can be overcome pretty easily.
Customer Review: Does the job Summary: 3 Stars
Slightly shorter than the previous models. Four shelves will hold DVDs upright and the last you will have to put them in two horizontal stacks. With that you can comfortable get about 120 DVDs into the thing. It does the job, is easily assembled and takes up little space.
Ah, I just remembered one problem. I don't know if this was just a defect with my particular purchase or typical of all the units, but the little metal bolts that allow for adjustable shelves and are supposed to be removable... well they're too short and the impressions drilled for them are too wide. So they constantly fell out and all the shelves would come crashing down on their own, so eventually I had to glue them in place. No more adjustable shelves.
Addendum: This was about $30 when I bought it. When I started buying these things a few years back there was a model like this for about $25 and a skinnier about half the width for $18. I have no clue why these things shot up in cost to such a severe margin, but at the current prices I'd rather by the laminated wood from home depot and make my own.
Customer Review: I could be biased Summary: 3 Stars
Ok, ok. I bought this product as an open box deal from my local Best Buy. I only paid $10 for it, so I didn't expect to much. I have had it for a couple of months and haven't had any problems with it. I did read the other online reviews before I got a chance to use it. With the complaints about it buckling, I took the precaution of drilling small holes in the sides and screwing through the sides into the ends of a couple of the shelves. (as I said, I only paid 10 dollars). With this little bit of extra support, I haven't had one bit of trouble. I have well over 200 cds on the rack and it holds together like a trooper. As a matter of fact, I recently recarpeted my home office and had to move it... full. It never acted like it wanted to fall apart.
I would recommend this product, if you don't mind making the simple modification to it's support system... on the other hand, if you pay full price for it, I don't think you should have to modify ANY product to get it to perform.
These have been my experiences with it, I hope I helped.
Customer Review: A cabinet that should have cost much less. Summary: 3 Stars
I've been collecting VHS tapes and DVD movies for over 35 years. I have something on the order of 700 or more VHS video tapes and 300 DVDs in my collection. Over the course of these years, it became necessary to buy storage cabinets to house this sizable collection. When I bought this latest cabinet, it never occurred to me just how flimsy a cabinet could be made. Based on my experiences with storage cabinets, and the costs associated with them, this cabinet which cost me $30 plus s and h, should have only cost $12-15. The individual slats and side pieces are thin, in my opinion. Lord willin, when the time comes to buy another cabinet, I will have to find something else with more subtance and structural integrity. I can only hope that when it's filled to capacity, the shelves don't buckle and/or collapse.
Since your next request for info is to find out if I'm older than 13, I will tell you, I'm 57!!
Customer Review: Does the Job Summary: 4 Stars
I found this product while I was searching for a dvd storage unit. Each one of these will hold 100+ dvds for sure (depending on how many tv collections or other boxed sets you may have).
I bought two and have had no problems with them. They were easy to set up; and while they look cheap, they do the job. You cannot really expect more from a $35 product. The best part about them, is that the shelves are customizable. Say you want to store DVDs and CDs together; the shelves can be positioned to hold the max quantity of whatever you need it for. I have had no shelves fall down and no problems with their construction. They will also be easy to take apart if you want to store them or pack them to move. Also, it must be said that the backing of this is made out of very thin cardboard material so don't attempt to move it while there are dvds on the shelves or there could be a big mess.
