Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Archos DVR Station Gen 5 for 405, 605, and 705 Players

Customer Review: Not impressed for the price.
Summary: 3 Stars

The product works ok. I think it's overpiced for what it does. I use the docking station with the 504.

I like that convenience of the docking station. The remote is compact and has good range.

I didn't like the fact that you have to choose the video output format in the Archos player. The docking station and player should be able to determine the best available output and display that. If the component video cables are plugged in, the default output format should be component. So, whatever video cable you plug in for the output, that should be set automatically. However, it doesn't do that. You have to manually set the output display in the player.

I expected more from something that is priced so high. No component inputs or s-video input.

Customer Review: Record TV directly to 605 without needing transcoding
Summary: 4 Stars

The DVR charges your 605 much faster than through USB. But the best function is to record TV or any other video sources directly. First, it does not have a TV tuner. With this limitation, I connect the DVR between my VCR and the TV. When I set up for recording, I have the DVR faces me and its remote. When finish, I have to turn it around so it's IR emitter faces the VCR's IR receiver. Other than this issue, it works well and relatively simple. One thing, I recorded a show that was four hours long (3 GB file in size), it plays fine in the Archos. But in transferring the file to the computer, the video actually was separated into two avi files--a avi and a av2 files. The av2 won't play in the computer. Just rename the xxx.av2 to xxx2.avi then they will play fine in the computer.

Customer Review: Great Accessory
Summary: 4 Stars

This product is great for what it does. It has a qwerty remote which makes it possible to use the internet while your on your Archos on the big screen. If your not a thumb typer it still has many features which will interest you. Converting your archos into a dvr (or DVP) is great. I have not used the DVR functions so the issues that others have had with power on and off have not botherd me. I convert my DVD's to digital and use this to access my hard disk through the wireless network. It queues up easily, plays with not hick-up's or network lag and allows remote control access to over 2TB of video, music and photos without having to figure out where I put that disk last time I watched it. I wish it had composite video outputs or HDMI. Idea for the Gen 6.

Customer Review: The Archos DVR Docking Station - Stellar Product
Summary: 3 Stars

The DVR Dock is an excellent compliment to the Archos 605, it instantly transforms it into a truly multimedia appliance, extending its functionality and capabilities immensely, setting up the dock and configuring it was very intuitive, just snap tab A into slot B, the IR remote prove to be simple to operate, all in all very straight forward setup and operation.

All cables and connectors were included, no need to run out and get extra items to get you up and running, when combined with the 605, the record quality is outstanding, even from a non-digital set, in the final analysis, this is a great product, flexible, intutive, robust and an outstanding compliment to the 605.

Customer Review: Good, but could be better
Summary: 4 Stars

I think this is a good by for anyone who owns an Archos. Some of the features you get from it you should be able to get without it. For instance, you shouldn't have to buy a peripheral like this in order to charge the main device from the wall (without one of the peripherals charging is only possible by usb). Also, I am not quite sure why they even allow you to output video with a component cable if there is no option to switch between 480i and 480p on the device. And there is no component input. Overall it is good, but some of the features seem forced, like you have to buy it in order to get stuff that should come standard and some features don't seem implemented well.
