Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Archos DVR Station Gen 5 for 405, 605, and 705 PlayersCustomer Review: Good docking station, TERRIBLE DVR Summary: 2 Stars
The GOOD:
If you want to dock your Archos to your TV or you Entertainment Sytem to listen to music, watch video, or browse the web, this is cool The remote is a much better interface for web browsing than the archos itself.
The BAD:
If you want a DVR, forget it.
1. The DVR station does not have a tuner. This means that you have to make sure that your TV (cable box, etc) is on the right channel and you cannot watch anything else at the same time.
2. Only unprotected recorded video can be watched on your TV. If the original video stream is pretected (like most DVDs), you can only watch the recorded video on the Archos screen, NOT on the TV screen. You also can't watch your protected recorded video anywhere else like your PC. Some folks claim that some cable/dish providers protect ALL their content. That would mean that you could only record with your VHF antenna, until that's obsolete next year.
SUMMARY:
I think it's a good product that may be worth $85 as an entertainment docking station with remote for your Archos. It's a horrible DVR.
Customer Review: Great Tool Summary: 4 Stars
Info: Video can be S-Video or Composite. Controllable video sources include Cable Box, Satellite, DVD Recorder, Digital TV, and VCR. The list of supported brands is extensive and includes all major name brands.
Setup: The DVR does not include a tuner. If you want to record "Show B" while watching "Show A" you will need a second tuner (Cable Box, VCR, etc). A simple setup would be cable from the wall to a VCR, composite video out to the DVR, DVR composite output back into VCR composite input, and VCR cable output into a TV.
Registration: Archos requires that you register the DVR to take advantage of the TV Guide feature. Its simple and only takes a few minutes.
TV Guide: At the time of this posting Archo's TV Guide is out of service. Tech support does not know when the service will be functional. The DVR is almost useless without the TV Guide. Currently users will have to manually set recordings.
Conclusion: The DVR is a cool piece of hardware that adds a new dimension of functionality to the Archos Series 5.
Customer Review: Great complement for the Archos 605!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
This DVR station is the best complement for the Archos 605 because it charges the device in about 3 hours. Its really smaller than I thought and really light. I have made a trip or two and I can just take the DVR station with me without running out of space in my backpack. Conecting the Archos 605 to the TV is really easy. The remote control is really great for managing everything on the TV. In total, GREAT PRODUCT!!!!
The service on Amazon.com was terrific. The packages were right on time, they were sealed and in perfect shape. The best thing is that I could monitor my purchase during the entire delivery time, which I did practically every 3 hours because of the excitement. It was just a breeze to buy it here, besides it was the best price I could find in the market (and trust me, I spend about 5 months looking this product everywhere online). I TOTALLY recomend buying it here!!!!!!
Customer Review: No built in tuner should be a deal breaker Summary: 2 Stars
No built in tuner means that when you want to record a show, the cable box will be turned to the recording channel. So if someone is watching tv when a scheduled recording is beginning, the channel will be changed and they will have to watch the show that is being recorded to the Archos. Unless of course you rent a separate cable box just for the Archos to use. Instead, Archos should have charged $10 more and put a built in tuner in the device. Instead, buy a usb or pci capture card, download free pvr software and have your PC or Mac do the recording and transfer the video to your Archos like you will with most of your video or music.
Any device like this or the low end sling boxes that don't have the traditional coaxial cable hookups (usually is a single cable that screws in - traditional cable company wiring) means the device will not have a built in tuner.
Customer Review: Good but cost keeps dropping Summary: 4 Stars
I'm not sure if they are trying to get rid of what they have in stock but the price has been getting lower for the past couple months. It was eighty seven dollars, then eighty the sixty nine then sixty. I bought it at sixty and now its fifty. Great product, only problem i had is that on the main menu on my tv it seems like its not flashing quite fast enough so it starts to make your eyes hurt. However vidoes are perfect but I seem to have the same problem surfing the internet, my eyes start to hurt like its doesn't have enough hertz or something. Works with youtube. I haven't tried recording video with it but I imagine it works fine. I was able to connect to the network at my house and play a file that was on the laptop in the public folder and it worked great. I love the wifi, a little slow for internet browsing though.
