Customer Review: Exactly what I wanted, no problems in a week

I have the 605 WiFi 160 for travel, and love it. But the Archos 7 is a much better size for video obviously, in situations where you have room for it. I also travel with a Kindle. I put my Archos 7 in a Kindle slipcase, it leaves 1" of space at the top where I put my earphones. Both of those fit in a small sort of manbag that I keep with me on the plane when I put my carry-on overhead.
I have the 7 completely full with movies and TV shows (whole seasons) I never had time to watch, and many hundreds of MP3s. (Likewise with my Kindle, which has dozens and dozens of books). I could be stranded forever on airplanes and in airports and never run out of entertainment.
I do also carry the biggest capacity external lithium battery that has a USB output (biggest Tekkeon), and both AC and DC chargers for it and the other two devices. That fits in my manbag thing too. Barely.
I've been very pleased with the 7's performance, and have had no problems of any kind. I hope it stays that way, but I never had any problems with any of my previous Archos PMPs.

I have bought one Archos 605 wifi and two Archos 7's with the DVR Station and they all were sent back. As much as I wanted these media players to work they were just a big let down. I have three other Insignia players that have worked fine for many years. I even bought a new laptop hoping the Archos 7 would sync to the Vista Home Premium Windows media player. The DVR station using the Archos 7 would not sync to my local channel guide. After hours with tech support, which by the way is at least a 30 minute wait on the phone, I was totally unable to get the things working correctly. To add insult to injury, I had purchased the Cinema plug-in for 19.95, which you must have to view most video, and even though I sent the Archos back and showed proof with a confirmation e-mail from Amazon.com, they would not refund the purchase of the plug-in to my credit card! They would be great devices if they did half of what they say they will! I highly advise Amazon to drop Archos from their list of media players. Just for some background on me. I have been an IT professional for several years.(Not Geek Squad LOL) I liked the Linux interface and the features that the 7 has. I called and wanted to exchange the item, but the turnaround for a replacement unit would be almost 30 days. I wanted to just pay for a new one, but they could not overnight the package to me even at my expense. Customer service said they could not get the package out that day.....being is was noon on a friday. OH NOES!
The thing was an absolute brick when I got it. All it would do is sound like a jet trying to take off. Trying to grind its way into the atmosphere. I would have given 0 stars if possible. They had their chance to make it right and did not. I guess I will have to get on the Ipad bandwagon as much as I hate to.

The device does not perform as I would prefer. The use of it with travel and watching videos is quite handy. Great on a trip, however the battery life does stop that luxury really quick. My battery last for 5 to tops 6 hours. It is a novelty and competes not so much with the iPad.
The device will hold large amounts of data but anything outside of music and video does not seem to be worth the hassle.
The alarm function does work but be careful how you use it, I would not have it as my only means of a wake up, with or without daylight savings issues :)
The instructions for the device are good, but are for the Archos 5, where the functionality of the 7 begin and Archo5 start is something left for the user to decipher. So what it does do I can deduce from trial and error.
The device fits into large pockets but you might have people wondering if you are happy to see them...that being said, it is good for trips but not so much as an enduring companion.

I'm a technology nut so I looked into getting a PMP and/or a Netbook device so I checked out the Cowon Q5W and the Archos 7. I did my research and looked at various sites including this one sifting through review after review and so I finally made the decision to purchase the Archos 7 after looking at the Cowon Q5W and it's multiple user interfaces. First and foremost the Archos 7 is a great device with flaws like any other technology but I highly recommend this product to all. Movies are great and easy to drag and drop movie and music files from your computer/laptop. Internet is cool but some sites using flash 10 may not play videos, however, Archos is working on the problem via a firmware update. Lastly, I would suggest that when purchasing this device make sure you get the Archos 7 from a reputable vendor such as Amazon with return policy in case this device isn't for you. Great product Archos!!!!!
