Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 8 GB (2nd Generation--without iPhone OS 3.1 Software) [Previous Model]Customer Review: not much good as a PDA or GTD organizer Summary: 2 Stars
When I went to a digital PDA (a Palm Pilot) some ten years ago, "moving up" from a paper based calendar/contacts system, I did so reluctantly.. but for one compelling advantage in the digital system: SEARCHABILITY. To be able to search my contacts and calendars and notes and EVERYTHING was incredibly attractive, and has proved invaluable over the years.
WHen my Palm device died recently, I upgraded to an iPod Touch, looking forward to the added functionality of wireless internet access, not to mention the music player capabilities.
I was stunned to discover that the iPhone / Touch operating system, already in its second version, has almost no search functionality. It's unbelievable that the primary advantage of digital storage - global search - is not incorporated into the Touch (and iPhone) operating system! Other very basic functionalities - like copy and paste - also are absent. I've been a Mac advocate for twenty years, and must report severe disappointment in this supposedly innovative device.
While the internet connectivity is neat, and the music portability is awesome, as a Personal Digital Assistant organizer - the main reason I would buy a Touch over a music iPod - the device is practically useless. What's worse, due to Apple OS restricitions, none of the thousands of Apps available for the device can provide the missing functionality. (e.g. I tried a really nice looking calendar app, and it couldn't make the Touch alarms work; nor did it have search or cut and paste).
Now I must wait for a new operating system to come out - there are promises of search functionality; but more likely I will sell the Touch and go back to a Palm or Blackberry device.
Customer Review: Love my I-Touch - much better than my Gen 1 I Pod Summary: 4 Stars
I got my first I-Pod as a gift and it sat in a box because I didn't see the need for another music source. I had a radio in my car and in my office and lots of CDs for the car. But then I changed jobs and wound up in an office that was too far from my favorite NYC public radio stations. I loaded up my I-pod with lots of tunes and it suddenly became my favorite gadget.
When the I-touch came out, I found out that it was Wi-Fi enabled and I immediately saw it had the potential to become my new radio. My office and home have wireless internet access and with the right (free) App store application, I now have access to every NPR station in America at my desk. I connect it via a cheap pair of speakers (under $10) and I have news, talk and music all day.
I have loaded a bunch of absolute favorite tunes on it for those times when I want to listen to "my" music, but my main use for the I-Touch is as a way-cool portable radio.
I also discovered the free games section on the app store and for a while was playing "Paper Toss" way too much. I found a few of these neat little time wasters that are another reason I love the I-Touch.
Battery life seems to be good enough for my use and since I keep mine in a neat padded case I found on a clearance counter, I have not had any problems yet with damage (although I hear that water does them in quickly).
The NPR application does seem to drop the Wi-Fi signal too easily and I don't know if it's a problem with the device or the software. (That's why only 4 stars).
Overall, this is a really cool little gadget that blows away my Gen 1 I-pod.
Customer Review: iphone and ipod touch are the best electronic invention in this decade Summary: 5 Stars
What most people fail to realize is that Apple didn't just build a better ipod when it invented the iphone and the ipod touch. no, Apple put into your hands the best small computer on the market today. I used to carry my macbook with me everywhere but after you own either the iphone or the ipod touch, that is no longer necessary. As long as you have one of them in your pocket, you are already carrying around a fully functional computer with full internet access and email access. They have the greatest viewing screen for video, pictures, and podcasts. You can read ebooks on them or listen to audiobooks. They are absolutely wonderful for listening to music and with a plug in device, you can listen to them through your car's radio. You can read your email. You can buy specialized software for even more functions. The only difference between the iphone and the ipod touch is that the iphone also has a phone as part of the device. I don't think that was the overriding thought in developing these. I think the overriding thought was to invent a computer you could run by touching choices on the screen with your fingertips. It is brilliant at doing just that and I often forget on my macbook that I can't touch its screen to make selections. I wish I could! It is filled with other great features too, like a great calculator and map finder. A kid on a campus which is fully covered with wifi internet access (the whole campus including the park benches) would probably do better (and much cheaper since there is no phone bill) with the ipod touch rather than an iphone. This and a macbook could be the two key things a kid takes to college.
Customer Review: I could not live without my Ipod Touch!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a former Palm Pilot owner -- I thought I loved my Palm Pilot, but when Ipod came out with the Touch I finally broke down and bought one when the 2G 8GB version came out -- I have not regretted it one bit! Amazon had a great deal where if you sign up for [...] you got $100 off the purchase price!! Plus I sold my old Palm Pilot for $150 -- so I actually ended up making money on the deal (then I regretted not having gotten the 16GB!) There is really no comparison between the Palm and Touch -- Apple makes it SO EASY and quick to install apps, the Palm was always time consuming and lugubrious to install software programs onto, and finding them was a hit or miss proposition. Apple has everything neatly packaged up in their Itunes software program for your computer and it's so easy and QUICK to find and install ANYTHING my little heart desires on the Touch! The touch has wifi so I can hook up to the wifi on my bus ride to and from work everyday and surf the web or check my emails. I love the KINDLE and STANZA reader apps! I have a library of almost 500 books on my Touch and read them constantly! Did I mention the apps? Weight Watchers now has a mobile app similar to their old Palm software program -- I can't wait to try it!! I literally carry my Touch with me EVERYWHERE I go -- I seriously could not live without it. I would get the iPhone version but I'm an older person who does not use my phone much, so the contracts involved in getting one would be cost-prohibitive, but I'm so happy that they offer the Touch! I am now only waiting for the Touch to come out with a camera installed and then I'm upgrading!!
Customer Review: Amazing ipod, many possiblities! Summary: 5 Stars
The ipod touch 2G is amazing, it can do almost everything that an computer or laptop can do but much more portable and convenient.
I like:
-Great size (its so small)
-Durable
-Enough battery life
-Decent sound quality
-Speaker (its not too loud, but loud enough to hear)
-App Store (Its like a buffet, but for apps)
-Bright Screen
-Responsive touch screen (the screen is great, it can get fingerprints)
-Multimedia powerhouse (Music, videos, internet, games, email,etc..)
-Wifi (internet, yay!)
-Bluetooth (peer to peer gaming)
-Stylish (looks sexy)
-Addicting (its too addicting, I take it everywhere, and use it everyday)
-Accelerometer (out of this world experiences)
I don't like:
-Back of the ipod (its so vulnerable to scratches)
-ipod heats up fast (I use it in long increments, it gets hot sometimes, it literally heats up)
-Price (its still pretty expensive honestly)
What is it missing? :
1. Video Camera with speaker.
2. FM radio
3. External memory (memory stick etc)
4. Support for more variety of formats. (how about flac?)
5. GPS (hmm maybe I went over the bar on this one)
6. Self replaceable battery (I know this will add more bulk to it, but at least it has a chance to last 10 years)
What accessories should you get? :
1. Case (Get it asap, to prevent back from scratching up)
2. Wall Charger (wall charger is a must)
3. Screen Protector (trust me on this one, my screen got a scratch)
