Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 8 GB (1st Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: Price does not include 2.0 software update fee
Summary: 3 Stars

Amazon has now changed the product name and deleted "with software update". I received an "iTouch with software update" on Aug 1st and found that it did not have the 2.0 software update. I was annoyed because I expected to save $10 by not having to buy the update from Apple. Amazon customer service told me to return it and they sent a new one. The new one also does not have the 2.0 software update but Amazon's misleading product description has now been revised.

Its still annoying to buy a new product with a widely publicized new software update, and find that you have to pay Apple an additional fee ($[...]) to get what you expected. The primary new feature in 2.0 provides for access to the iPhone/iTouch apps store for purchasing new apps. This is nice but it does not justify a fee for upgrade. The iTunes update that is required for iTouch is free so why not iTouch 2.0 software too? If any other company shipped a product without current software they would rightly be blasted by the media. At the very least Apple (or Amazon) should include a $[...] rebate coupon to cover the upgrade.

Otherwise the iTouch is an excellent, although somewhat overpriced product, with the excellent user interfaces and integration with iTunes that we expect from Apple. One complaint is that text can be too small for older people. It is possible to zoom text in mail and browser modes but it should be easily available in all modes.

One star off for lack of current software, one star off for high price and text readability.

Customer Review: Nice features for a mobile internet device - Music player meets PDA
Summary: 4 Stars

The iPod touch is a portable music player with Wifi, so you can run a version of the Safari internet browser. It's a good alternative if you don't want the exclusive Phone service that comes with the iPhone, iPod's big brother.

Pandora is the killer app for this device. While being able to carry 1000 songs in your pocket is nice, there are other ways to do that. What makes the iPod touch special is that you can downloads free and non-free applications from iTunes store. A version of google maps is available, and the first time you use it with a Wireless Access point, you'll probably get creeped out a little bit that it knows where you are most of the time.

The integrated Wifi makes it easy to use Pandora, a music service that allows you to listen to music that you would like, based on your preferences. The Wifi range is good, although not as extreme as the range on the XO laptop.

I use mine with a screen protector, and an over-the-ear headphone Skullcandy SC-BHESH07 Hesh Headphone, Black, which allow me to shut out the outside world when I need to.

There are a few missing features, including lack of audio input (no VOIP phone) and the lack of a user-replaceable battery. The biggest issue for some will be the lack of ability to share apps from device to device, like the early palm pilot PDAs. Apple wants to control the apps you run on the device, so it may be a while before peer sharing is acceptable.

Customer Review: The best Apple product I've bought
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this product two weeks ago and ship it to Bolivia (South America), so I had to wait longer than usual (one week and a half for arrival), but believe me, all of this waiting time is worth. What I received was a perfectly made box, then I open up the box, the quality is perfect, I love my iPod Touch display, is so big, also the touch screen is perfect. Finding music now is very easy, you can fast scroll to your artist's name alphabetically, when you twist the device you see the Cover Flow which is great. The Safari browser is so cool, so easy to browse the web, you pinch with your fingers and you zoom any page. The battery duration listening about 2-3 hours of music during the day is about 3-4 days, 8 GB it's fine for me as all my music and some music videos takes only 4 GB. I also converted some Simpsons episodes, I recommend to use Nero as I tried with other converters (Xilisoft) and Nero creates an almost-perfect video, very small and well synced image and sound. Everything is so well designed in this product, every little detail is so planned that you'll be amazed, I recommend you to buy the Griffin case, it looks great and comes with a free display-protector for scratches and dust. Well, I had the iPod nano 8GB but replaced it with this great product, and have no regrets at all, touch technology is so amazing and so sexy that all the people who sees it they don't believe that we've come so far, now I think touching is the technology revolution!!

Customer Review: ON? OFF? VOLUME?
Summary: 1 Stars

The most basic elements of a music playing machine are ON, OFF and VOLUME. These are all highly inaccessible on the go, which is where this device is used otherwise use the home computer or home stereo. So you are walking down the street with your iPod touch going and you are rockin' out a bit and a you see a friend and they say "Hi" and you barely heard them so ensues the awkwardness of this machine. To lower the volume or pause in the 1/2 second you have is impossible. You have to wait for screens to show up and gravity to send the right message and screens to adjust and lighting and etc. and then you have to hit this and slide that and by then your friend is gone. Best is to rip the ear buds out and risk all those tangles as the bud finds whatever edge or corner it can then gets grabbed and the jack gets ripped from the machine or whatever... its a freaking mess. Operating this machine while driving? Might as well drink a fifth of Jack because that's how disconnected from the road you get when trying to change anything about what's playing.

in a nutshell. great device if you are are stationary but then isn't that what a desktop computer is for? Don't waste your time, money and frustration free moments.

PS - the touch screen is sketchy - some times it works, sometimes it doesn't - simply a gimmick thats not ready for primetime or useful engagement on the human finger.

Customer Review: My best gadget purchase in years!!
Summary: 5 Stars

You will not regret buying the Touch with the software update - I am very, very happy with mine. Bright screen, world-class fit and finish, pretty good battery life and tons of functionality. Your photos will look great, Gmail is easy, and I have already downloaded a lot of map coverage (which cannot be "synced" onto the Touch as far as I can tell - you have to connect the Touch to the internet thru your wireless). I connected it to my laptop and all of my old iPod Nano music synced onto the Touch in a matter of minutes. Music, photos, e-mail, notes for (eg) a journal plus stocks and weather - the software update Touch has a lot to offer. OK - I do have one complaint and one suggestion - I wish they would have made the backside matte-finished instead of polished - it is really a finger-print magnet. And, I would prefer it to be just a little bigger to make some things (like maps) easier to read. Kudos to J&R Music and Computer too - I ordered this from Amazon but J&R sold and shipped it - it was in Iraq eight days after I placed the order!!
Edited on 03/03/2008 to add: The Touch continues to impress me. You can't really "save" maps on it - but if you place a bookmark at a location then that area and map scale is preserved to use when you are not on-line. G-mail continues to work like a charm. The Touch has easily replaced my old PDA and offers much more functionality.
