Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 8 GB (1st Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Almost as good as an iPhone... Summary: 4 Stars
The Apple iPod Touch is a fantastic product, utilizing the new touch screen features that seem to wow the iPhone crowd. I received the new iPod Touch as a gift this August, and I have been using it everyday since. I use it to play my iTunes music, write my to-do list, sync my Outlook calendar and contacts, send and check e-mail, and browse the internet. However, I cannot make nor receive phone calls. That is the one function my iPod is missing, and I regret having to reach into my bag, pull out my cell phone, and put my iPod away.
I find my new gadget very easy to use and very reliable, but I find myself wishing for an iPhone instead. I would rather not have two gadgets when they could very easily be rolled into one. Also, I have found that I must pay $9.99 to download the new Apps Store from iTunes, while my iPhone-using friends can download it for free. So, to download the free applications that iTunes has to offer for my iPod, I must pay an initial set-up fee. This has deterred me from making the purchase. I am not that desperate to play games that I am willing to pay $10 for them. Another thing that deters me is the wireless internet situation. As a college student, I can secure wireless internet on my campus and in my house, but I cannot get it while walking down the street or while riding in the car. Since I am not using an AT&T service, I cannot utilize the Edge network, and that makes connectivity slightly frustrating. Connecting is also not automatic, so I must manually connect to a wireless network of choice before I can surf the Web or check my e-mail.
So, now that the holidays are fast approaching, I find myself hoping for an iPhone. I would gladly put my iPod Touch away to gain more convenience and connectivity.
Customer Review: Slick with neat applications, but not as useful as Nokia N800 Summary: 4 Stars
I've been wanting to really use the itouch ever since it first appeared as the iphone. I'm now doing that. I'd already tried it out and saw it used by others, so I had a pretty good sense of what to expect, but daily use is different than a few minutes of play. I know at least one person who sold their Nokia N800 (the closest device in terms of size and functionality that I've seen so far). Their use of the machines is clearly different than mine, as I won't even consider doing that.
The itouch is slicker to use. Its a much better digital music player than the N800 (or its predecessor, the 770) and several of its applications are simply neat beyond comparison. I love the way Youtube works on the itouch. The Google maps and Yahoo weather applications are incredible, and the browser is a work of art when you zoom in on and navigate pages with gestures like pinch and swipe.
That said, I won't even think of taking anything but trivial notes on the itouch. The larger screen and stylus of tne Nokia N800 and 770 make them much better writing machines. I've written papers on the Nokia. Writing anything on the itouch is a painful process of missed keystrokes and corrections.
I don't mind the differences. Both fit quite nicely in my top pocket (with the much smaller itouch nestling nicely in the screen depression of the N800). There will be times when I just want a really little device along. When that happens the itouch will more than do the job so long as I don't plan to write anything. There are obviously other differences (I could shoot a short video on the Nokia, upload it to Youtube, and view it from the itouch), but on the whole there is room in my pocket for both devices.
Customer Review: iPod Touch - A Great Multipurpose Device Summary: 4 Stars
This is my 3rd ipod and I can conclude that it is my favorite. Although the others I had were the very first iPod (with the 4 buttons along the top and the scroll wheel below) and the 1st gen nano. Both worked very well for me but they don't stand up to the touch.
Obviously the major selling point of the touch is well touch! And Apple does a very good job with it. I found it to be very responsive and have no issues with it. The keyboard will take some getting used to though. I will say that if you have big fingers the touch might not be for you.
Not all has been perfect with the touch though. I have one major gripe. At times when I am in an application say just listen to music, using safari, or just using Google maps, out of nowhere I will get kicked out to the home screen without warning. I'm not sure if it's just too much data being recieved at once of what. It just kicks me out to the home screen and doesn't give me a message, and I just have to go back to the app again. Now this doesn't happen to often. It's ridiculous that this happens but I don't mind if it's only a few times.
The touch is really easy to use which is why it's so like-able. Navigating is really easy. Music, are pretty straight forward. Safari is really easy to use. While viewing the page, slide you finger across to see more of the page, pinch your fingers to zoom-out, and "un-pinch" to zoom-in. For e-mail, just enter your info and you can browse your inbox, outbox, drafts, bulk.
So if your looking for a cool iPod with some pretty cool features check out the iPod touch. You won't be dissapointed.
Customer Review: IPOD TOUCH Summary: 4 Stars
This is great! I am in sales so I travel just about everyday and needed a device that I could keep contacts, calendar events and more at my finger tips! I carry it in my pocket just like a PDA and since it is slim you almost forget you have it in your pocket. I can plug it into my car radio for my long trips and listen to my music, podcasts, or audio books. It works well when I am staying away from home since I have all my pictures downloaded that I can flip through. Great for the airplane to since you can put movies on it!
Few things I wished worked a little better:
The wi-fi is not as strong as I would like. Sometimes I have trouble connecting to signals that I can connect to with my laptop.
Battery power is great and last long, but if you leave the wi-fi turned on it will drain the battery because it keeps looking for a signal. Can be a pain to change this setting all the time.
Would be nice to be able to create your own shortcuts on the home screens. Like place the wi-fi setting on the home screen and then it would only be a single click away.
Would also like to download files to it for viewing (word docs, spreadsheets, small dbase files).
I know, I know some of you are shouting at your PC screens this is an IPOD not a PDA! Your are correct and it works great I am just saying it would be nice to have those features to and then this would be considered one of the greatest electronic gadets on the planet since the invention of the laptop!
If you travel for business and need a PDA like device and can't afford a PDA phone this is the way to go!
Customer Review: Nearly perfect Summary: 5 Stars
Apple did a great job with the Touch. Its sleek, light weight, and easy on the eyes. I thought the touch screen and motion sensitive controls would be a novelty but they're anything but.
Pros:
Ease of use: I'd never used any of the Pods before (I'd used Sansa Players before), but after watching a couple of tutoral videos I quickly got the hang of it.
The APP Store: Wow. These apps make the Itouch more than an just an MP3 player, its a mini computer.
The Screen: Is made of a heavy duty glass that is scratch resistant, enough said.
Cons:
I-Tunes: You're pretty much stuck using I-Tunes.
Headphones: Could they have possibly made more uncomfortable ear buds? I also wonder why they made the buds white when the player is black and silver? My advice is to buy something better, Apple needs to redesign these earphones. My Final gripe is that the headphone jack is on the bottom of the player.
The 2.0 update: I spent over $200 on this I-Pod and they want me to pay $10 for a software upgrade? This is the reason I've been reluctant to buy Apple products, they really like to squeeze every dime they can outta you.
The APP Store: They have alot a nice stuff on there, but an awful lot of it is overpriced.
Overall this is a fantastic player, most of the cons are minor. I'm still miffed over being asked to spend $10 for an update, I've never had to pay for one with any of my previous electronics. Apple is making plenty charging for the apps themselves there was no reason to charge so much for the upgrade.
