Customer Review: Great Idea But Buggy Operating System
Summary: 3 Stars

My first Ipod Touch came without a working touch screen, so sent it back and received a new one. All was well for the first two weeks until I tried to ugragde the OS to the new 2.2 version. Halfway though, the Ipod crashed and never powered up again despite resetting. I called Apple support and thought it took 30 minutes, I finally convinced them that this Ipod was dead. I later searched on the web and found many postings of the same nature (crash on upgrade to 2.2.).

Apple told me to take it to the nearest repair facility for repair/replacment. I've had an Ipod Classic for three years and never had a single crash or upgrade issue. The Ipod Touch... a total failure on something as simple as an upgrade? The technical support said perhaps my fire wall had something to do with preventing an upload of the Bonjour software, which somehow is necessary for Ipods to update...that was never made clear. So, it's off to Apple for the second time in as many weeks with a dodgy Ipod Touch.

This is a great little item when it works. Checking E-mail, video, games, long battery life, great touch screen functionality...all wonderfully bundled into a neat gadget. But what good is it when it crashes and burns when you take Apple's suggestion to update the software? This is not an isolated incident and Apple does not have much to say about it. Apple said the turn-a-round on replacing the item is about three to four days but I'm off on an international trip tomorrow and very disappointed that my handy-dandy Ipod Touch will not make the trip.

Customer Review: Just Like McDonald's Drive Thru
Summary: 1 Stars

Tried a drive-thru diet coke at McDonald's today. New store. Gorgeous landscaping. Nice signs. Fitting architecture. Staff unloading delivery truck. But the guy actually said, "wait a minute, I have to reset the diet coke." I am not making this up. Five minutes later I drove away without a diet coke.

This experience is like my new iPod touch 32 GB (2nd Generation). Fantastic device. Incredible capability. Looks great. Very nice user interface. But the sound - yes, the sound - doesn't work right. When you plug in the earbuds to listen to iTunes, the socket apparently makes only marginal contact with the plug-in jack because only a little movement of the iPod causes the sound playback to stop. You have to jiggle the plug-in and press play again.

It gets better.

I sent the first unit to Apple for repair. They said they could not duplicate the problem and sent it back. It worked just as poorly as when I sent it in. So I asked Amazon to replace the device. They have graciously done so.

Now the replacement has the same problem. It's not just the Apple supplied earbuds. It's also the Bose earbuds that I separately purchased. Both sets of earbuds work fine when plugged into my laptop.

So a $370 iPod is essentially useless to listen to iTunes when I go for a walk in the evening.

Apple. Nice company. Neat logo. Nice products and nice packaging. A cool dude doing TV commercials trying to be smug in the presence of a PC geek. Kind of reminds me of going through a McDonald's drive-thru.

Customer Review: Great iPod, But Not A Great Screen
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently purchased the 2nd Gen. Apple iPod Touch 32 GB. It is my 1st MP3 player and all I can say is wow. This thing really is cool. You have the Internet, music, photos, calendars, to-do lists, multitudes of apps, and I believe the list can go on to the hundreds.

So now that we know this thing is worth the purchase, one thing I want to emphasize is that the screen is easily susceptible to scratches. Even with care, the slightest finger nail sweep across the screen can scratch it. I did some research for a good screen protector and found that the best one is from Apple called Power Support Anti-Glare Film Set for iPod Touch. It cost me $15, but it really does protect the screen as well as eliminate the fingerprint marks that were so evident before the protector. It's not as glossy as it was before and that's because the screen protector has a matte finish. The iPod screen is still as sensitive with the protective film and now there is absolutely no glare. You can use the iPod indoors or outdoors with equal visibility of the screen. That is an added bonus for me. I also purchased a silicone backing to protect the back of the iPod. Those can be found anywhere for around $5.

I'm happy with my purchase of the iPod as well as the screen protector. If you do purchase the iPod, I would recommend adding the screen protector even before using the iPod. Protect your investment from the start. You'll be glad you did.

Customer Review: Do NOT buy if you reside in a Humid climate or use it to Work-Out
Summary: 3 Stars

I was very excited to purchase my Ipod touch and really loved all the features. It really does do everything. I even purchased the Nike + for it and with an arm band, and silicone case, used to it work out. About 4 months after purchase, the on/off button stopped resonding, then the wi-fi stopped working, then my Nike + was not recognized. I called Apple and they promptly sent me a box to ship it back to them for repair. I was advised by Apple the next day that my Ipod had water damage?? And it was being shipped back to me unrepaired as this was not covered by their warranty. I never got the thing wet! I never took it in the rain! The only thing I can think of was sweat from when I worked out and/or humidity. I did a little research on line and found out that the water sensor can be tripped very easily by both humidity and as little as a speck of water, rendering your ipod full of problems. You would think that since this Ipod has the built in Nike+ feature and is suppose to be great to work out with, it could withstand some sweat or humidity. I do live in MI and we do get humid weather here on certain days. I am very disappointed in this product and find it to be extremely flimsy. I spent $369 on a product 4 months ago that I am now going to have to have repaired at some ridiculous price! Apple customer service was not very helpful and made me feel like I was lying to them! While I love the design and all the capabilities of the Ipod Touch, I think Apple needs to rethink its durability design.

Customer Review: amazing improvement on this
Summary: 5 Stars

When the 1st gen iPod touch came out, I eagerly bought one. I was excited to get one finally and upon getting home, began the time consuming process of moving all my music to it. Well....a few hours later with my wallet 20.00 lighter for the "update", and a jammed-up sync process I decided that this wasn't worth the hassle and returned it. I decided there that I wouldn't buy an iPod touch again. I broke my own promise and I'm happy I did!! The 2nd gen is light years ahead of the old one in terms of improved battery life, ease of use, and the addition of volume buttons and a display on/off switch. I should mention here that on the 1st gen I purchased Splashshopper and it refused to sync in any way, shape, or form. On the 2nd gen, I'm not sure what is different but it works fine now and I"m happy I bought the new 'Pod. I have made a complete switch from my Palm Z22 to my iPod Touch. The touch now carries my music, shopping lists, money manager, budget, checkbook register, pictures, cool (and free) games, movies and tv shows, and thanks to the download of Stanza it is now my own version of a Kindle with 17 books on it (sorry Amazon!). Oh, and add the WiFi for when you want to do a little net surfing while you drink your coffee. This device has become hard to leave the house without thanks in full to its functionality and usefulness. If you're on the fence thinking about buying this, take the plunge. You'll be surprised just how useful the new iPod Touch is.
