Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 32 GB (2nd Generation) [Previous Model]

Customer Review: Apple has won me over
Summary: 5 Stars

I have always shunned Apple and it's products. The main reason was the lock down of music from the iTunes store. Now that Amazon and other sites are selling music in DRM free MP3 format, I don't have to bother with the iTunes store. This is my first apple product and I think it is a great product. I have owned a couple off brand MP3 players like the Creative Zen.
Likes:
It is always on. I don't have to wait for it to boot up.
Great Screen - very bright and clear
Love how it turns off when I unplug a cable from the headphone jack (Like when I am in a car and plug the cable that connects it to the radio)
Touch screen is very accurate
Speaker is very useful. Not the best sounding, but very useful
Randomizing music really works. (The Zen seemed to always play the songs in the same random order)
Very compact and light. (When compared to the touch, the Zen is a brick)
Haven't found any software bugs
Syncs very quickly.
There are a lot of free apps and games
Battery life is great

Cons:
Accessories are hard to find.
Too many ipod models with their special connectors leads to mass confusion. It is hard to find accessories that truly work. Some products say they will connect to 2nd generation but fail to mention that charging won't work. Even most employees at Electronic stores are clueless. They will tell you their guess and act like it is reality. (In my experience at the stores I go to, most of the time they are wrong.)
iTunes software is taking longer and longer to load.
iTunes is ok. It doesn't make playing just one album under genre very easy. I have to uncheck everything every time and then check just the album I want to hear.
Apple seems to think that people want to use a playlist for EVERYTHING. I'm sorry, if I just want to hear some specific music, I don't want to create a playlist.
iTunes store - DRM.. enough said
Music seems to be distorted at louder levels.

I may be unique, but I want to have the ability to take my music with me to any product. When I finally move on from Apple products (which won't happen for many years) I want to be able to take my music with me. If I purchase music from iTunes and don't pay extra for the non DRM, MP3 tracks, I won't be able to port the music over to a new non apple device.

Amazon and other DRM free MP3 sites have made my acceptance of the ipods much much easier. In fact, I would still be using other brands if these sites haven't come along. Sorry Apple, but I will not allow my music to be forever locked down to only your products. Repurchasing my music just so I can use a different product is not a viable option.

All in all, I love the touch. It's easy and fun to use. It is very portable and is a very handy device. I have found it to be a device I carry everywhere with me. With my Zen, that wasn't the case, it was just a MP3 player that I would use in the car, and only that. I would recommend the touch to anyone who wants a very good MP3 player/game player/etc.

Customer Review: Beautiful, elegant and sleek
Summary: 5 Stars

Leave it to Apple to come up with another beautiful, sleek ipod. This has to be the nicest one yet. My old ipod is a second or third generation classic type, so this is a big step forward. I can't believe how thin and light it is. It seems many generations ahead of my old one (Which is still in remarkable shape) The thing I like best about this ipod is the touch screen and how responsive it is. Being able to zoom in on web pages with just a tap is a great feature as is being able to rotate the screen by turning it.

The wifi feature is great and you can download all sorts of applications directly to your ipod. In addition it is compatible with Nike +. So if you have the shoes you just slip in the sensor and the sensor communicates wirelessly with your iPod touch. It tracks your distance, time and how many calories you've burned, all automatically. I'm going to have to look into getting those. The technology seems so cool!

There are so many features available in this ipod that I probably will never use them all but the one thing I really like is being able to view photos and the fact that it will hold so many of them. You can sync your pictures from iPhoto on a Mac or Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Photoshop Album on a PC. Then view them as thumbnails to find the photo you want and tap to view it full screen. You can also turn the ipod to see it in landscape view. The colors and images are so crisp and bright, it's better than carrying around a paper photo album. Especially when you consider that it can hold something like 25,000 photos.

The only thing I've found that could use improvement so far is the sound of the speakers. But considering the small, sleek size of this ipod, it isn't something I would complain about. I always listen with headphones anyway, but the speakers are probably there more for the games than music. I got this case which I'm really happy with. Speck PixelSkin for iPod touch 2G (Black) I posted some pictures of it on the product page. I also got iKross 3-Pack Premium Reusable LCD Screen Protector with Lint Cleaning Cloth for iPod touch (Clear) to protect the screen.

All in all, this is a fantastic piece of technology and I'm glad I purchased it.

Update 12/26/08 - The connection to our home wifi network Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router was a breeze, it took about 3 minutes. That was how long it took to type in the password. It saw the network right away. I downloaded a couple games, something I don't normally do, but just wanted to see the technology and it's pretty amazing. This is nothing like my old ipod. The touch screen is so cool.

Customer Review: RANK 1.

Before you read any further, understand that I've had my iPod touch for 15 months.

My blackberry and the iPod touch are possibly two devices I can't live without but overall I feel this one does almost everything my Blackberry does but only faster and easier. Would I ever get the iPhone? No.

My favourite features on the iPod touch are - bluetooth, speed of installing, restarting, battery life, display, browsing capability, email setup, build quality...

Itunes no longer allows me to add songs to this mp3 player and wants a reset really bad which is so annoying. I wish there was a way of backing up apps on the ipod like we have for the blackberry.

I have noticed that some of the applications feel much better on this iPod than on the iPhone. On the iPhone, I have noticed a visual blur with a lag of sort, this I don't notice on this flawless device. The battery life is surprisingly good and I'm glad I can attach it into a usb port to charge though I haven't done it since a year. I say so because when the wifi is on, the battery life still remains awesome.

I did buy the $10 upgrade to the newest software. I have never called Apple for anything but if I could, I would like to ask them to advise me on how to save all the apps I have purchased for over $150.

A podcast is a sound file (usually significantly longer than an mp3) and these or many of these can be downloaded from Apple iTunes for absolutely free. I've heard some great music using the podcasts but I wish I had more time in my life to do the same. If you're in the USA and you don't have an iPod touch, then I don't know what you're thinking because the capabilities are almost too good to be true.

The music quality and maximum volume is so-so. The bundled earphones I have long lost and they weren't too bad, just very average. I dislike the lock option and having to use my finger from right to left. The speaker volume is low but worthy none the less because it allows you to converse while not disturbing or being too loud at all. It's a bit like music playing in the distance and should be best left for preview.

While 32gb might not seem like a lot, it is sufficient enough. If itunes for windows was anywhere near as good as this iPod, I would've been slightly happier but I"m just being greedy now but you can't blame me for it is annoying how difficult and impossible it has become to upload mp3s to this device cause it's so corrupted and wants so badly to be reset.

I do not wish to reset and if you have a better back up plan for me, do let me know. I charge my ipod once in 5 days. I use it to check four email accounts, all mine, all from different years of my life.

I use a SPECK case for it and it only makes my experience more worthwhile.

This is also a very good expensive but memorable gift.

Customer Review: 14 months/several updates, does not perform like it should
Summary: 2 Stars

When I first bought my iPod Touch 32gb 2nd generation mp3 player, I was in heaven!! I just loved this device, the ease of use, all the apps available and being able to store movies and over 1600 mp3s and still have storage space, it was a dream come true.

Then came the nightmare.

With all the iTunes updates the Touch does not perform the way it should. Genius playlist caused alot of problems.

Now my touch screen doesn't respond the way it should or used to just one month after the warranty expired and after an iTunes update.

Genius playlist was turned off in iTunes, but kept searching on the touch. An error message would pop up to let me know no playlist was found...no kidding...I didn't make one nor did I intend to. Then after playing about 6 songs, the screen would go black with a white apple in the middle, just rebooted for no reason.

The battery dies faster, the touch wants to reboot if playing a song then go to touch the screen to get back on the main menu, the music just stops, the black screen appears again. The touch also shuts down without warning, I had never had this problem before. It takes longer than 10 seconds of pressing the top button and the front screen on button to get it to start up. Once the screen appears, it takes several slides of the "slide to unlock" to get to the main screen if I get there at all. At times, it just goes back to the black screen with the white apple in the middle.

Plugging into the computer with iTunes, the touch wants to go do things without even touching the screen, a certain song I have wants to pop up to go to the YouTube video, all without my touching it to do so.

Also on certain menus I try to change settings on, the screen gives you a split second to decide then changes to what it wants to. The flipping back and forth is annoying. A problem I never had until the last 3 updates.

I used iTunes to restore the device and reloaded all the apps and mp3s back to it to no avail, the problems still continue.

I spent 400.00 plus an extra 9.99 for the update to get it to function like the 3rd generation models on this device for it to last 14 months? In many ways I am beginning to believe Apple is like Microsoft, make updates with disregard to previous models, peripherals or type of equipment as long as it works for their newest products thinking "well consumers will just buy more".

I am done with Apple products and they lost a customer. Considered getting an iPad but with this crap going on with the Touch that is just over a year old, I have reconsidered.

Customer Review: Surprised
Summary: 5 Stars

I got an itouch because apple had a promotion that you could get one with a new laptop purchase. i wasn't in the market for one as i already have several ipods plus a blackberry.

i upgraded from the free 8gb to the 32 gb model (paying the difference in cost) and am very glad i did. when you add music, pictures, apps, it can all add up. and since you can't increase the memory without buying a new unit I am increasingly happy with my decision to get the larger model.

I upgraded, for 9.95 to version 3.0 software. with that you can shake you itouch and it will shuffle music, it also has more parental controls, and the ability to use the keyboard sideways. i believe it is also faster. also with 3.0, if you have mobile me, you can send a message to your phone if it is lost so that whoever sees it will get the message. also, you can have the ipod make a noise so that if you have lost it in your house or car, you can find it easier. also, with mobile me, you can delete all personal information from the itouch if it is lost and not found, that way, no one will have your contacts, calendar, etc.

One thing that i like about the itouch is the ability to easily view you tube videos, pictures, and internet (when in a wifi area). it is easier than on my blackberry. of course, on the blackberry you can use it anywhere you can get service so there is advantages to that as well.

as with all ipod/itouches this easily syncs with itunes and if you have a mac you can also sync photos, calendar, address book, notes, etc. using the calendar on this is much easier than the calendar on an ipod. in fact, i think the ipod calendar is pretty useless.

there are a lot of free apps you can download, including games to keep your kids busy. the apps are far superior than those you can get on a blackberry. and many of them are for adults too.

It is certainly a fun device and now that i have it, i wouldn't want to be without one. i do still have a classic ipod that is 60 gb, which can hold my entire itunes library so i will be keeping that. and i have the nano for exercise and will be keeping that. i guess they all serve different purposes.

This second generation itouch has speakers on it. the first didn't. they aren't great speakers, but they work. it also has voice memos.

i you purchase mobile me, you can also sync contact, calendar, mail all without hooking it up to the computer. it uses push technology and it is all done wirelessly whenever your itouch is in a wifi area.
