Customer Review: Love the wireless connection without phone
Summary: 4 Stars

I just got my iPod Touch yesterday and had no problem using WEP to connect to my wireless router. I've owned the iPod Video for over two years now and love it. The new one works great and charges in my Apple docking station that I bought when I purchased the iPod Video back in 2006. I've connected it to my JBL clock radio with no problem; however, it will no longer charge through the clock radio. It's no big issue anyway, since I can always charge it up on the docking station or computer.

Despite only 16GB, it's really enough if you're selective about what you put on it. Right now it's halfway filled up with music because most of my music is on it, but actually I could just load particular playlists or select only songs, apps or videos that I want to take with me if necessary.

To conserve energy, don't connect to the wireless network when you don't need to. I'd say so far it's a great purchase, although I'm having trouble justifying the price when there are other options out there. I love being able to check e-mail or connecting to Pandora Radio without having to turn on my computer. I connect the iPod to my stereo or PAL speaker through the Apple docking station. It also has a small speaker, but I don't recommend using it.

I've just done a sound comparison of Bajofondo's "Chiquilines" (from Amazon - very high quality recording) and a few other songs between the iPod Video and the iPod Touch (no extra settings used) using Sennheiser PX 100 headphones. It's really tough to make the comparison. In some ways, the sound seems to be a bit crisper on the iPod Touch, but this seems to be due to the Sennheiser headphones. The sound is flatter when using the headphones that came with the older iPod. I never use the headphones that come with the device anyway. I'll have to test both against the Sansa Fuze next.

One thing I do like is how it's a bit easier to fast forward through the songs on the new iPod Touch. One the old iPod Video I had to press the center button twice.

Recommended improvements:
1. Add a microphone for recording information like other devices
2. Add a slot to allow for memory expansion like other MP3 devices
3. Add a slot for swapping battery

Customer Review: Ear Jack Sucks
Summary: 3 Stars

I own the Ipod 2nd gen touch. The first day i bought it the left earpiece blew out. This should have been a red flag but it wasn't. I was going to return it the next day (thinking its the earphones) but low and behold it starting working again the next day before i went to take it back. okay, no big deal, i wont have to get on the bus and take an hour to get to the store. So after that it was fine, now i'll admit i thought i somewhat abused my ipod, but after reading reviews i doubt it was me. I tend to put it in my back pocket when i sit, im not heavy so i figured it was fine and i wasnt crushing it in any degree. Then the left earpiece went out a couple months later. Now at this point i had forgot that the day i got the thing it went out, and i hate small in-ear phones and was planning on getting over-ear phones so i didnt care that they broke. I hadn't found a pair i liked so i got some cheap ($10)in-ear ones to pass the time. these went out in a week or 2, i fig. cause they were cheap, then the new apple set w/the ear remote comes out, so i decide to get those, so i can record and leave voice memo's for myself. After a couple weeks the left ears starts going in and out. I decide to stop sitting on my ipod, i also find over the ear headphones i like (skullcandy). Within a month the left ear of my skullcandy headphones goes out, i dont want to spend another $50 so i bite the bullet, no thinking about a warranty, and go back to my new apple ones. im extra careful no and they still short out. Then i figure its not the ear pieces when i get a brand new pair and they instantly dont work. I take the ipod to apple, and nicely they replaced it even though my warranty had expired jus a couple days before. i can tell they give me a used ipod, but whatever, as long as it works, and normally i would test it right then but since theres no music on it i cant test the sound. when i get home... the NEW/used ipod has the same fricking issue...okay, maybe its the headphones, i get home try out one i know that works same issue... i plug it into my speakers that have a headphone jack, the speaker is either too low or mute, then i read amazon revies and ppl have the same issue!!!

Customer Review: curvier, lighter, cheaper, iPhone-ier
Summary: 4 Stars

The 2G iPod Touch is a solid update, with some nice new, er, touches. If you have the existing 1G Touch, you won't find a compelling reason to upgrade unless you use the Nike+ fitness device, as this new Touch has that support built in. If you've been waiting for the price to come down, good news: the new devices are about $100 cheaper than their predecessors, so the 32Gb Touch can be had for under $400, and the 8Gb for a little over $200. The 16Gb device strikes me as the sweet spot at $299.

Improvements include: iPhone Firmware 2.1, which opens access to the AppStore and fixes some of 2.0's bugs; an internal speaker (not terribly loud, but it'll do in a pinch); the Nike+ support; a new form factor that is lighter and curved for easier holding (though if you use it on a flat surface it's not as stable as the 1G); 6 hour video / 36 hour audio battery life; support for the new iTunes 8.0 Genius playlists (similar to Rhapsody Channels and Pandora, but limited to your on-device music collection).

If your primary need is for an audio player, especially for podcasts and audiobooks where the device sits in your pocket for hours on end, I'd recommend you consider the iPod Nano. The new 4G Nano tops off at 16Gb, which works out to nearly six months of spoken-word content. And at $199, you get twice the storage for less than the 8Gb Touch.

Where the Touch shines is in its interactivity - a gorgeous video-viewing experience that won't strain your eyes like the Nano, full Safari browser and other Internet-enabled applications (with a WiFi connection), gorgeous 2D and decent 3D gaming, PDA-like functionality. It's called Touch for a reason - it screams out to be looked at, touched, played with, caressed, even licked. It's a full-blown computer in your hand; to use it as a mere digital audio player makes Steve Jobs cry.

I wouldn't toss a 1G Touch for this device, since you can upgrade to the 2.1 firmware and get most of the goodies in software. But if you're looking to upgrade from a smaller device and want something with the additional potential to replace your Palm, PSP or Nintendo DS Lite, this is a compelling option.

Customer Review: AN ACTUAL SYNC
Summary: 5 Stars

So, I am one of those off people who haven't had an iPod since the 1 GB nano. This is my second one. Needless to say I filled up my PC with 10 GB of music and was heavily syncing various playlists every week. Well, I finally decided that this year I wanted an upgrade and was seriously torn between this product and the 120GB. I thought all I want is more music and podcast space, right?
Thankfully, a few people within my circle suggested the 16GB touch for the same price and I can't believe I ever considered the alternative. The iTouch is amazing and has literally changed things for me. I was concerned about not having enough space like I wanted; but, I was surprised as to how much I have available with this iPod. The built in speakers are also great. For example, when listening to a podcast in the car I can keep listening when I get home by setting it on the counter without having to plug in headphones...brilliant!. My only complaint which isn't really a complaint as much as it is a fact is that I wish there were more Wi-Fi places in the area. It is kind of bunk when I want to download a book or search for show times on the fly; but, need to find a hotspot first. Obviously, I just call instead.
So, all I really want to share in this review is what I actually have synched on my touch right now for those of you who are considering this product or another one.

Customer Review: Love It
Summary: 3 Stars

I've had my new IPod Touch for about a month now and love it more each day. I have the 16 GB and plan to exchange it for the 32 GB shortly, however as my memory is getting close to maxing out already. I have all my music stored on it like I did my last IPod Classic, but this has the built-in speaker, internet access (that I can use anywhere in the house or at work), weather updates, maps & directions, Face book, YouTube, calendar, contacts, a notepad that I use constantly for my to-do lists, shopping lists, etc., as well as many other applications. The latest app that I downloaded for free was "Lose It", a great weight loss too that calculates how many calories you can eat to lose a specified amount of weight. Then, it lets record the foods you eat during the day and the exercises you do add up all the individual and total calories consumed, less the allowance for exercise and calories burned, to net you total used and remaining calories available. Love it! I've lost over 6 lbs in 3 weeks. My goal was 2 lbs/wk and it's working. I also downloaded the free Podcast "9 weeks from couch potato to 5k" and started walking/running. Great Podcast.
I am concerned about a previous review where the Itouch went from the cold outside to the warm inside and caused condensation that was not covered under warranty. In my mind, this is a defect. It should be able to withstand at least that amount of temperature change and this reflects very poorly on apple engineers (unless they are just greedy and want to keep selling more). My son had an iPod shuffle for Christmas one year and he dropped it in the soft fresh snow and immediately picked it up, only to find that it was never to work again. I have a protective case and will be upgrading to a new leather one with the hopes of a moderately durable product. This is the 5th iPod purchase for me and there are only two working. While the innovation is great and practical use is great (5-star), the design and durability is poor (1-star) so I ultimately give this a 3. I hope that the durability proves to be better.
