Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 16 GB (2nd Generation) [Previous Model]

Customer Review: Not worth the trouble
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this and LOVED it for the first few days, but my inner geek kicked in and I was disappointed. This player has a lot of features, but don't let that fool you, there are a lot of fatal flaws with this one that will make me wait until future generations come out. Guys, do some research on the history of the Ipod "classic." Look on wiki for their pictures and you'll laugh your head off, and you can see the original prices of those items were around $400. Let's wait for Apple to work out the kinks and not get suckered into paying so much for a less-than-perfect product.

Problems that I couldn't forgive.

1. BATTERY LIFE. My job is too dull to do without music, and I was extremely upset that my Ipod died before lunch. I dimmed the screen and tried it the next day and I didn't get much further in the day without being musicless.

2. Not being able to turn the tilt feature off, or whatever it's officially called. If you're holding the Ipod upright and you tilt it longways the screen will change with your turns. Aww, isn't that cute. Is it practical for mobile people wanting to control their Ipod? NO! Forget about being able to control your Ipod in your pocket while you're walking, or pausing it for that matter. If something distracts you and you need to stop the music, the only quick remedy is the pull the headphones out. You really never know which way the screen has titled in your pocket and it seems that the unit gets a bit disoriented when it's been moving around in your pocket and won't reset back to an upright position. I wanted to throw it across the street a few times because all I wanted to do was change songs and I had to click on the home button and then click on music to get back to an upright position.

3. No longer can you use this as a hard drive. Remember the good old days when you could throw school files and large files on your Ipod by dragging them onto the drive? Sorry... you can't do that anymore.

4. Sound quality. I'm very picky about sound and this just didn't cut it. I really felt like I was just buying all of the flashy features and wasn't even getting a good mp3 player out of it.

So... If you're wanting a cool little toy to play with and get your finger smudges all over then this isn't that bad. It IS fun to play with ; I can't lie about that. IF you are just looking for a good mp3 player I would go with the classic.

I'm actually thinking about trying the Archos player because I've never had any problems with them.

Three stars for the fun-ness of the product, minus 1 for all the finger smudges that aggravated my OCD.

Customer Review: Moms!!! Improve Your LIfe with the Ipod Touch
Summary: 5 Stars

There are many reviews here for the IPOD Touch but I know there are people out there that are still wondering if this darn thing is "for them". Let me give you My Mom POV.

First off, the Ipod Touch is remarkably small so it's no problem to tote around. It fits in a small purse or belly-bag; even your jean's or sweatpant's pocket.

The Touch came with everything I needed with two exceptions which I'm going to suggest you get too-- both were cheap. The first is a rubber case which slips over it Speck Products Pixel Skin iPhone 3G Case (Huckleberry Purple); the second of which was a face plate protector Apple iPod Touch Premium Anti-Glare (Smudge Free, Full Face Film)- Bulk Packaging (Made in korea)

The rubber case, which I got in bright purple, serves three purposes. First, it helps you locate the darn thing in a crowded room or purse. Secondly, it should soften any blow and offer at least a bit of protection against drops, which is mandatory if you've got kids, or are clumsy, like moi. Third, it makes the slick Ipod less slick which should make drops less likely. The faceplate is necessary if you carry it in your purse or pocket to prevent scratches.

Now for functionality...

Sure people get this for music, but it's so much MORE. First of all it's replaced my paper grocery list. Now I just keep my list in Notepad. (No more forgetting to bring the list along. Different lists can be kept for different stores: one for Rite Aid. One for Walmart) This is good (nay, GREAT!) because I can now email the list to my husband's phone so he can stop by the store on his way home from work.

Second, it's replaced my calculator. And now I can rock-out while paying the bills.

Third, It's replaced that stupid, clumsy daytimer. Now I've got this small electronic contact list, that also has everyone's email addresses and even pictures. Having email is great if you don't want to talk to someone, but need to relate some PTO incident.

Fourth... WiFi! Now I can web-off at McDonald's while the children are running amok in the playground. The Ipod touch lets you surf and email, check the weather forecasts, your calendar, and the time. Heck, you can even tell it what's in your stock portfolio.

All together this is an amazing device that has simplified and improved this mom's life.

coming from a windows world, i started with a shuffle, then got a nano and then an apple airport extreme and a bunch of airport expresses. ap extreme is the apple router and the expresses are plug-in extensions which expand the wifi and also add an audio port (optical or analog!)so that you can stream your itunes throughout your house. turning each speaker port on or off and even broadcasting through the whole house!

i then found out that an itouch can be programmed (through an app) to act as a remote for the itunes on any computer on the network! the only comparable system i had seen which would give me whole house broadcasting was thousands of dollars. i bought the itouch and sure enough it worked as a remote. i could sit by the pool and select songs, create playlists, volume, etc from a deck chair.

and all of it worked perfectly.

BUT

the itouch has two flaws which do annoy me.

a) the battery life is awful. no other way to say it. i even bought a supplemental battery pack for it, but it sucks the energy right out ofthe pack as well

b) the safari browser is nightmarish. you can expand the text by double-clicking, but more often than not accidentally hit a link. there is no clear way to navigate from page to page. its very awkward and the lack of flash is unbearable.

now those two items are annoying, but the amount of good stuff included and available boggles the mind. it has a bug deterrent app! haha

i recognize that most people use their itouches for video and music and i found both of those to be wonderful experiences. a long drive was made much more bearable by watching an entire season of brothers & sisters.

unfortunately i cannot watch my amazon on demand on there which is annoying to no end.

games are fun on there. i got caught in lemonaide tycooon for days.

if you are willing to deal with crappy battery life (or like me, mainly want to use the itouch as a smart remote (did i mention that it even displays the album cover while the music plays on the airport express???) then this is a good buy. i heard that the 32gb has screen problems so probably best to stick to the 16GB

in conclusion, the outlandish feature set of the overall apple equipment that i bought caused me to reconsider my long-time windows/pc loyalty. here i was with a bunch of different mac items and they all did so much and i couldnt even browse the net on a windows machine without annoying crashes, that i decided to get a mac pc. my god 12GB of ram but thats a review for a different day. :)

Customer Review: Thoughts for people new to iPods
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, I want to say that I strive to make my reviews as helpful as possible. So please tell me it you think my review is helpful so I can improve my future reviews. I would suggest downloading the latest version of iTunes before buying an iPod or especially an iTouch. I had my iTunes library finished before I even ordered an iTouch. I put 7 movies, 48 albums, 6 audio podcasts, 1 audio book, and over 150 photos on iTunes. And yet my iTouch is still only half full. It can be pretty nerve racking to hope that nothing will go wrong during a sycning prosses that takes over 20 minutes! And something most likely will go wrong. But if you read the user guides found at www.apple.com/support, you shouldn't have too much trouble setting up your iTouch. You have to have an iTunes account to buy songs and podcasts and register movies, which can be obtained by having an Apple ID (at least that's how I got mine). Once you 're all sycned and powered up, you can start playing with your new toy. By touching and holding on any application, you can rearrange and delete applications. You can only delete downloaded applications though. Flip through cover flow by tilting your iTouch on its side in the music application. Or surf the web using Safari. I've found the Safari application works just fine most of the time. And a little note regarding the home page: I have not found a way to remove a home screen, so if you add the New York Times to your home screen, I'm not sure if there's any way to get it off later. And unless you're constanly on the internet, you will want to turn off the wireless. It really drains the battery. You would only get like 2 and a half hours of internet before the battery dies. The email is fast, and it gives you many options on how your itouch and your email server work together. For instance, when you delete an item on your itouch, it will either be displayed on the server as trash, or it will just be removed from the inbox and moved to the folder of your choice. You can accsess all of the same folders you can accsess on you regular email account and edit them in the same ways. Calendar, maps, contacs, weather, and stocks all work as you might expect them to work. Choose many different locations to be displayed on weather. The same with stocks. I am amazed a the sensativity of the screen and ease of use. Although it may take some skill to gwt through the set-up process, it's absolutely amazing to see what Apple has done with the 2nd GEN of the iPod touch. Read some of my other reviews at the app store on iTunes.

Customer Review: Ipod Amazing! Do you really want to Fork over all that $$ ?!?! From a "Mom's" perspective....
Summary: 5 Stars

Now there are many great reviews that will tell you all the nifty things that this baby

This is NOT that kind of review!!!

My son had been saving for sometime for a GOOD laptop
REALLY also wanted this Ipod Touch, he asked me which he should get as he did not have enough $$ for both, & was torn.......they both would be soooo neat to have ....

I pointed out to him that as he really had no place he "needed" to take a laptop & we have several desktop computers that are by no means outdated,
that he probably would be happiest IF he got the ipod touch & continued to save for a laptop, because laptops continue to go on sale as technology gets better & better & they have to get rid of the older series, Ipods however do not usually go on sale that I've seen & as it was just released, it would be the latest technology in Ipod Touch for awhile. I told him that IF it was me, I would get the 16 gb.......

Aaannnndddd he could continue to save $$ (as it was less expensive than the laptops he was planning on getting), & by the time he was ready to start college in a couple of years he would be set to buy a laptop he actually had a NEED for!

Well we have ALL been delighted with this little wonder of a "Thingy"!! His older brother's college calculator just went on the fritz & he didn't have a back up (they cost about $200.00!) well Ipod Touch to the rescue! He had wanted to learn to play the guitar that his Gramma gave him, but the steel strings really dampened his enthusiasm.......again Ipod to the rescue!! And .....Oh-my goodness......ALL the inexpensive games & movies to load onto the Ipod......truly astounding!! Where as Every computer program & games (His REAL reason for wanting the laptop!) would set you back at LEAST $50.00 a pop! :-0

We bought ours from Amazon, because there was NO sales tax, free shipping & they are just WONDERFUL to deal with should you have a need!

They also had the best overall price, so what the hay!! :-)

He can go online just like with a laptop........now I know you all know about all the neat things it does, but as the kids tell me & show me more & more things DAILY, I'm thinking about getting one for myself, & i don't really listen to music much.........it's all the other stuff for such a great price!

We are VERY happy with this purchase......not one regret, & that in itself is unique around here!
