Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 16 GB (1st Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: More useful than a Swiss Army Knife
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned the iPod touch since October 07. I can honestly say that the touch is more useful than when it was initially purchased. The software upgrade (now available on all new touch) took this item from good to great.

First of all it is an iPod... not an iPhone, so if you want an iPhone go ahead and get one... Don't bash this product because that is not what the touch is trying to be. The iTunes interface is the same as in the past, it works great, and the music player has great sound. The "cover flow" mode of looking through your CD's is very cool. I must say I enjoy being able to look at the covers of all my CD's.

The calendar is nice and works well as a PDA now that the software upgrades have made it possible to edit the calendar. The calendar syncs well with iCal if you use that program on your computer. I subscribed to the US holiday calendar so now the US holidays are in my calendar (including daylight savings) that helps keep me organized.

The contacts feature allows you to input names, phone numbers, and addresses. You can tag the contacts with pictures of the contact if you chose. When you have WiFi access and you touch the contact's address the iPod touch will pull up a map Google map and show you where the address is on a map.

The touch has a photo album that you can move your pictures from computer to touch. The pictures look really clear. The photos will show in a slide show, or you can go to one specific picture.

The touch will detect WiFi networks well. If you need to put in a special password to get on your home network you only have to put the code in once. The touch remembers that password when you get close to that network. The WiFi does cause the battery to drain faster so I find that if I am not going to be using the WiFi it is best to turn that feature off.

The iPod touch is a great option for a person in the market for a music player and a PDA. I think it is great that I get most of the features of the iPhone without the monthly bill. A software developer kit was released this spring so the future should be exciting for this product. I have the 16 GB version.. I am OK with that. I think that as soon as the new applications start coming out I will be pinched for space. At this time I have 1500 songs, 8 videos, 23 pictures and a decent sized address book... I still have 8GB available for new things.

I am happy with the iPod touch... thats just my 2¢

I love this thing for what I use it for - internet access on a small portable format. I have a different phone carrier then AT&T so I didn't want the iPhone but I like having the internet at my fingertips on a such a small yet functional format. I prefer my Creative Zen for music so I really don't use this for songs but I have 150 songs or so that I carry around for entertainment. I also love the media capability (movies take up about 2 GB each but tv shows are better and easy to download). This product offers all of the options the iPhone does but without the cell phone part. Sure it costs a lot but it is worth it. Instead of carrying around a portable dvd player, a MP3 player, palm pilot and my laptop - I can just pack this little beauty for everyday use and trips. The iTouch is so slim it can fit in my pocket. I am seriously considering changing to AT&T and getting the iPhone to cut down on carrying my cell phone in addition to the iTouch. The price is still a little steep and I'm not a big fan of AT&T but the convenience is winning me over. I will never get rid of my Creative Zen so the music is one feature I don't use as much. Also, I am thinking about getting a Creative media player and comparing since I love that product line. I have a Blackberry that I really love and it provides the same intenet accessibility but the screen is much smaller. Also, all of the options are on the menu and available at one touch - media, weather, music, maps, etc. I have to navigate around a little more on my Blackberry to get comparable options. The iTouch is so easy to figure out and use which is nice. The only drawback I have found is the touch controls (they don't work as well in cold weather and adjustments are hard). Another big negative (hence the 4 stars) is the lack of expansion. This product does not allow for memory cards like other products and 2 of the 16 GB is already used for applications! Also, it does not allow for easy exchange of information but that's Apple products in general.

The iTouch is perfect for people who do not have AT&T as their carrier but still want the convenience of the iPhone options. This will definitely cut down on all the gadgets you need to carry around and I recommend it.

Customer Review: The best iPod so far!
Summary: 4 Stars

After one week of use the iPod Touch feels like an extension of my body. I can not put it down!
It's PDA like functionality is the most addictive feature, so addictive in fact I almost forgot that it plays music.
Of course the included software would not be enough to use as a full featured PDA but with the addition of user created web apps you can pretty much do whatever you want.
I have the Touch synced with two of my e-mail accounts and find that it works flawlessly. It works too well, I don't even check my Outlook anymore.
Web browsing is great, it is fast and easy to read with the quick zoom function. The only thing I can complain about is no Flash support which is a big deal. Limited video, no Pandora, etc. Without Flash support you are getting a watered down version of the internet. If it had Flash support I would give it 5 stars.
Music playback is what you would expect from an iPod. The touch interface is a lot easier to use than the click wheel while driving, just don't stare at the screen too long! The sound is good as long as you upgrade your headphones and rip your music at least at 320kbps or Apple Lossless. Don't waste your time with music from iTunes, just buy the CD and rip it.
Video playback is where the Touch really outshines the Classic and the Nano. I can watch a whole movie or show without any eye fatigue. The picture quality is very good, not quite DVD quality, but really close. I can't imagine watching anything on my Classic after using the Touch.
The widgets such as weather, stock tracker, and the note pad are a really nice addition to the core uses. Games are also available but you have to be online to play them. Hopefully iTunes will have some games for us soon. (You could jailbreak the Touch but that is something you need to decide to do.)
I hope Apple will add Flash support soon, with it the iPod Touch would be 90% perfect. I highly recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to pay $80 per month to AT&T, doesn't care about a built in camera, and is usually around a Wi-Fi hotspot. Personally, I can't imagine not owning one even though I already have three other iPods. Man up and buy it already!

Customer Review: Toucha Toucha Toucha Touch Me!
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I said that hasn't already been said? The IPOD TOUCH is a device from the future. It's the tricorder I wanted as a child. It's sexy, sleek, and amazing. Do I sound like a gadget fangirl? Well, not usually, but when my husband bought a TOUCH, I very quickly became hooked. More than that, the whole family suddenly had to have it. I was reminded of the classic movie The Gods Must Be Crazy when the Coke bottle landed in the middle of the tribe and soon no one could live without it. Of course, we weren't that bad, really, but the phrase, "Where's the Touch" became quite common. The exception was the 3-year-old. She'd asked, "Where's Daddy's special little TV?" Now at age 4, she's also playing - and winning - several of the games. And that's part of the beauty of the design of the TOUCH. It's clean. Everyone understands the basic rules of how the apps work. Everyone can turn it on, flick through the screens, and find they app they want. The device is small enough to take everywhere but the screen is large enough to watch movies on. It is truly a paradigm-shifting design.

The TOUCH and the iPhone are fraternal twins. While springing from the same nucleus, they are different. The TOUCH is slimmer, has no phone, no GPS, and no speaker. For my tastes, that's just fine, although a speaker would be nice. We have the 16GB version which is plenty for a score of movies/TV shows, plus some music, audiobooks, and a slew of apps. I actually like that it is not also my phone, but I wouldn't give it away if it were! I'm just leery of all-in-one products. Battery life is descent, but we always have a charger close at hand. One nice thing is that you can turn the screen off while listening to music or an audiobook. You can even play games while listening to your own music. And of course, you have Apple's App store full of every type of program imaginable.

We've had our TOUCH for more than 2 years, and we still love it. It goes everywhere with us and truly has us spoiled. More on that in my review of the Samsung Omnia.

Customer Review: Amazing piece of gadgetry
Summary: 4 Stars

One word to describe this: Amazing.

As you may have noticed, this is one very slick looking gadget in the line of i-can-do-it-all type of pocket wizards. This device made my 40 min commute to work by bus so much fun that I almost missed where I was supposed to get off... twice... I live in bay area and the transbay buses are equipped with free wifi. Being able to check e-mail, facebook, movies, amazon (you name it) without paying for data plans is quite cool. Equally cool is to be able to listen to my favorite tunes while doing that. As a bonus, the free games available for it are all addictive. So far, I am really impressed. However it still falls short of 5 stars, because it is not perfect. Here are my minor moans:

1. Startup is too long for a player of this caliber. Especially given that it has a non-mechanical drive. My 5-year old iRiver imp-200 which is based on a laptop hard drive boots twice as fast as this.

2. The battery life is good, but not as much as I expected. I use it ~2 hours everyday. Mostly listening to music and playing games on it. I found that I have to charge it every third day. That means I am getting about 7-8 hours of juice from it. It is okay but not that great and certainly not enough for that flight from SFO to London..

3. So you are telling me that you built this masterpiece but somehow forgot to put a resume function to it?? wow.. I was really taken aback for this and I really think it is the new firmware issue.. The songs now have an option you can turn on so that itouch remembers where it left off. However, this option is only valid when the player is active or when you put it to sleep mode.. If you turn it off, all bets are also off.. Next time it is on, it just goes to the last album list you were looking at.. The funny thing is, I believe prior to 2.0, ipod touch was able to do this.. so as I said, this might be fixed in a future firmware release..

Thats it. All in all, I am really glad I made the purchase.
