Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 16 GB (1st Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Best Media Player Summary: 5 Stars
I'm writing this under the assumption that you've owned several media players in the past.
From a usability perspective, this is an absolute dream. I have right now close to 20 audiobooks, tons of podcasts, probably 2000 songs, and a couple of videos, and the touch screen navigation makes it easier to find exactly what you want faster. When viewing long lists of items, such as Albums or Artists, a strip of letters will appear on the right hand side. If you run your finger down the strip of letters, the screen will actually snap to the location of the items that start with that letter. Marvelous. The flicking motion you can make to rapidly scroll through long lists of items aimlessly works really well too, with enough precision for you to put your finger down, and stop it dead in it's tracks. The visual sensation is similar to that of a wheel spinning after building up momentum, and stopping it dead in it's tracks. Surfing the internet on this is excellent as well. I use to take my Macbook Pro with me literally everywhere I go just in case I needed it, and though I still do this, I am not doing this nearly as often as I did before I got this. I wouldn't read the internet on here for more then an hour, or hour and a half during lunch, but it does an excellent job of accurately showing web pages (keep in mind, Flash isn't currently supported). Video on this screen is great. Even Youtube videos look great on this.
No, 16GB isn't as much as the 80GB whatever it is you want to compare it to. But even with the slightest bit of forthought, you should be able to fit everything you can realistically want on this. My personal media collection is larger then the average (60GB including 36GB of music, rest being movies, not including pictures), and with a couple of smart playlists, I have never found myself wanting to listen to something that was just not on there. Your milage may vary of course, but having a device this small is wonderful. The ability to get on the internet without having to take out my laptop where ever there is a Wifi hotspot (just about everywhere nowadays) is great. This thing saved my sanity so many times at Barnes and Noble, and Borders when Christmas shopping
Customer Review: Impressive...Yes, Overpriced...Yes, Worth it...Depends Summary: 4 Stars
Being an early adopter of this shiny new iPod comes with drawbacks. All of us who went out and bought this new device surely understood this. If not, those 1-star fools deserved what they got.
I bought my touch two weeks ago, before the official release date because I was absolutely amazed by what it offered. I bought it knowing full well of all the crippling that Apple stupidly implemented. I do not agree with what Apple has done to "differentiate" the touch from the iphone. However, for me, the purchase made sense because as far as a PMP (personal media player), no other device rivals the touch.
Reasons why the touch works for me:
1. Brilliant screen (darker than iphone screen...yes, but still beautiful)
2. The touch interface is better than any clunky button interface
3. No signing my life away to AT&T or $$$/hack to SIM off to another carrier. I'll keep my devices separate for the time-being.
4. I'm cool paying premium for a quality device that I use every day, especially since I know it serves my purposes perfectly (podcasts, music, video podcasts, TV episodes, occasional movie, quickie photo album).
5. Lastly...the icing on the cake is the web browser/wifi capability. The browser rendering is fantastic and is actually quite usable.
My complaints/hopes for improvement are the same as other folks:
1. Apple needs to provide a decent remote for this thing so it is actually usable in a car or on a jog. I know, I know...there are a few 3rd party remotes out there, but the choices are few. I have yet to find a simple inexpensive wire remote that will just plug into the touch.
2. Flash and Java of course.
3. Uncripple this thing! Makes no consumer-sense to not have simple notes, a real calendar, email client, & maps client.
So if you want the best PMP available and don't mind paying more for a quality device, then go get yourself an iPod Touch. I know I did and absolutely love it!

Customer Review: SDK kit confirmed Summary: 5 Stars
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/ says:
Third Party Applications on the iPhone
Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers' hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.
It will take until February to release an SDK because we're trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once--provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones--this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.
Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than "totally open," we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone's amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.
We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.
Steve
P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch. [Oct 17, 2007]
Customer Review: Visually stunning, idiot proof design Summary: 5 Stars
I bought the 16GB iTouch and have to say that it is one of my best ever purchases. It is undeniably stunning but it also has a very simple design philosophy. Excluding the obvious on/off button, the iTouch operates on the basis of a single 'Home' button and an infinitely variable touch screen interface. As for simple, if you want to listen to music, touch the music icon, if you want movies then touch the movie icon and so on. You can filter how you browse your music by playlist, album, song, artist, genre... actually you sort it pretty much the same as you do on iTunes. So that can't be a bad thing.
And then there is coverflow. Stunning just about gets there as a description. Flick through album covers like you'd flick through your CD collection. See an album you wanna listen to, just touch it. Flick down through the album and pick a song or just hit shuffle to listen to the whole thing in random order. Its slim, tidy and light all of which means very portable. It can store almost 4,000 regular songs which is more than you can listen to before you need to recharge the battery (in about 20hrs continuous play of music) so the obsession with having a 160GB hard drive is just plain nuts in my view. The battery on Movie play last for about 5hrs but thats gonna be 2Movies so that'll fit on the iTouch no problem.
Couple of draw backs though- there is no external volume control so turning that up or down blindly in your pocket is practically impossible.
The ear phones that it comes with are average at best, the standard ipod design but without the really clear sounds of the higher end headphones. Don't get me wrong, the earphones do the job but there is definitely better out there without having to break the bank.
The screen and backing do smudge a lot but thats a by product of using your fingers to navigate (nothing a good polish with the sleeve of your jumper couldn't fix).
It definitely gets my endorsment and is well worth the money.
Customer Review: 400 songs, 12 movies, Photo Albums , Universities, and WiFi in my pocket Summary: 5 Stars
Beam me up, Scotty! (Actually, that command was not stated as such in any episode.)
In a pocket is this tiny device that holds twelve movies and 400 songs, automatically organized into albums when appropriate, along with WiFi capability.
The small sturdy stand allows one to prop it on one's lap, a bed, a table, and watch full-length movies that have incredibly good definition.
Or create personalized playlists of one's favorite music, be it Klingon Opera or Klezmer Hip Hop or Mozart or Bach, to play selectively.
Want to bore others with favorite photos? This little wonder holds photo albums, too.
This is a really sexy device, and can easily be attached to an inexpensive speaker system, the size of a paperback novel, to take a break from using any form of earphones or earpods or earbuds. Also, then, one can watch and listen to one's favorite romantic movies with his or her loved one.
With the advent of iTunes U., one has access to courses at prestigious universities, also, free of charge. Learn a new language, study quantum physics, learn to paint or play piano at an extra cost of $0.
Surf the web, save and file your favorite YouTube videos.
Personally, I prefer this to the iPhone (although that is quite nice, too) since it costs less, and holds more music and video.
A few improvements would be nice:
* a chime so that one can locate it when he or she cannot remember where it was last (mis)placed
* more memory,
* a harddrive.
* a scientific calculator
* other software
But the advantages far outweigh these minor disadvantages. It is not perfect; its grade is not 100%, but 99.9%, which is still an A+ .
Mixing metaphors, the touch screen makes one feel as if he or she has control of the bright side of the Force.
