Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod nano 8 GB Pink (4th Generation) [Previous Model]Customer Review: I Really Didn't Like It! Summary: 2 Stars
I love music. I am someone who haunts reviews and go to personal listening at the stores before I make a purchase. I originally purchased a Zune 120gb device and it threw an error so while that was sent in for repair I needed to obtain another player that would serve as a secondary in case the Zune threw another error in the future. With that said, I looked online and researched for a day before I decided to get this player. I usually research for at least a month before I purchase, but I was desperate to have my tunes back because I walk to work and was not thrilled with walking to silence. I went to Wal-Mart and picked up the 8gb Ipod in pink. I went home and charged it, then loaded my mandatory music lists on it. Everything was set to go. I had a first listen and it sounded somewhat okay. I am not a lover of equalizers because they tend to make the music sound distorted, in my opinion. I would rather have a player that is set on one setting and sounds amazing for everything. That was the first strike. The second strike came when I listened to the player for no more than 30 minutes and the battery level had started dipping drastically. That, to me, is really unacceptable. My Zune, in comparison, dropped a little after about two and a half hours of straight listening. I guess maybe I got spoiled. I do a lot of walking throughout the work week to and from work and I loved the idea of not having to charge every night when I got home. Luckily my mp3 player came back from repair (they replaced with a new player) the next afternoon because I was not happy with this Ipod. Needless to say the player went into a drawer for about 6 months and then I gave it to my cousin later on. She loves it, but different strokes for different folks.
1. Color/Size: Amazing shade of pink. I did not like the size so much. I tend to lose things in my massive purse and this was no exception.
2. Music Clarity: A bit weak for my taste. I tend to like bass and I did not get that without serious distortion. The equalizer, in my opinion and experience with mp3 players, tend to make the sound seriously weaker than that of a device that does not focus on the equalizer. It was certainly not the headphones either because I used my same headphones from the Zune (not Zune brand) and they sound amazing on that!
3. User Interface (UI): Not my cup of tea, to be honest. I never liked the whole moving your thumb right and the menu selector going left and vice versa. I like to go in the direction I wanted to go in, not a lot of tricks and gimmicks to distract me.
4. Battery Life: Terrible is an understatement. I like for my players to hold a little juice. I had a Sony Walkman Mp3 player and even the battery in that far surpassed the Ipod. I thought maybe it was just my player, but my fiancé's mom's 16gb did the same thing. I loaded her music on and she listened for about two hours and then she had it plugged back in the computer because it was super dead. Unacceptable!
5. Video Playback: I never used it because I was afraid the battery was going to die while I was out. For reference point, my old pink Sony Walkman Mp3 player allowed me to watch two episodes of Gilmore Girls (42 minutes each) and listen to three more hours of music before totally shutting down. My Zune allowed me to look at two full movies (2 hours each) and listen to about 3 more hours of music before seriously shutting off. Based off these two very different devices, the Ipod's battery is substandard at best, so watching a video is total madness.
6. Apps: I am not a fan of apps on a player. I have an mp3 player for music, not for playing games. With that said, I did not really see many apps on the player, but because I don't really care one way or the other, this will not lower nor improve my score on this device.
All in all, if you are looking for a cute device that is trendy and more than likely what your friends have, then get the Ipod. If you are looking for a hardcore device who's core focus is on sound and the longevity of the battery power, then I would look elsewhere for a device. I know most people think Ipod is the next best thing since sliced bread, but I have found different and prefer something else. I am not saying that this is the worst device on the market because it certainly is not, but I would prefer Sony, Zune, and maybe Archos over this device. I have opted for the Zune HD 16gb device, and while that is thinner than the 120gb, I am satisfied. It has a equalizer as well, but as long as it's off it does not distort the music playback and there is still a rich sound. Just my preference, however!
