Customer Review: Update: COVERFLOW CAN NOW BE DISABLED! (New rating: 4 stars)
Summary: 2 Stars

11/12/2008 UPDATE:
Apple has released a software update (via iTunes) that will allow the user of a 4th generation iPod nano to disable the Coverflow view (which activates upon tilting the nano horizontally). This was a major gripe for many but a big "thumbs-up" to Apple for resolving this issue.

Note: I'd update the 4G nano's rating from my earlier 2 stars to 4 but Amazon does not allow me to modify that part (is this a glaring oversight by Amazon, or a glitch with my Firefox brower?).

-----

Real world testing was not in Apple's nano 4G design process. Otherwise they would've included an option to disable that idiotic Coverflow so users could make casual adjustments to volume and songs by feel. The nano 4G requires you to orientate it vertically to gain back access to those controls! Not good. Maybe Apple will release a software update to remedy this oversight, but they're notorious for not listening to their customers so I returned my nano 4G to Amazon. Colors are vibrant and beautiful, audio quality is excellent, and it feels great in the hand, but if you want a nano then get the 3G one instead...you'll be much happier.

Customer Review: Great MP3 player
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had other MP3 players but this one is a great value. The menus are easy to navigate, the controls are just as you would expect, and the battery lasts for about 8 hours if you are only listening to music. If you play the games, the battery drains quickly. The only feature I did not like is that you cannot charge the unit with the cable that it came with while you listen to the music. As soon as you plug the ipod to the computer it "docks" it, charges and doesn't let you use the menu. When you undock it, all is normal again, but the battery doesn't charge. I purchased an inexpensive wall/car charger that does let you charge and use. I also bought a silicone skin cover, and a screen protector that I would recommend. Size is perfect, storage size is great for most users. 8gb is a lot of music! Price on Amazon was the most competitive, shipping was free and you may also save on state taxes. The headphones are good and do feel a bit "big" so they don't go into my ears snug but the sound quality is very good. I would recommend this MP3 player to anyone. If I lost it or it broke I would definitely buy another.

Customer Review: Does What I Expected and Wanted
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Nano to replace my iPod classic, a big, bulky, heavy thing. The Nano is small and sweet and easily fits into a pocket or purse without adding weight. I bought the 8GB because I won't be watching videos or movies on a screen that small. This size holds all the music and podcasts I have with room left over. I was glad to pick out a color I like (my classic iPod was white). There are a few options I won't ever use, such as shaking it to change songs and (probably) the genius feature. Everything turns off or back on so it's no big deal. I find it no problem that it can only recharge using Apple's chargers mostly because what I replaced was the same way and now I have two chargers. I recommend buying a case to keep it looking great. Why spend money and not take care of it? The battery life could be better for podcasts and audio books, but since I've not had a need to listen to anything for 3 or 4 hours non-stop, it's not been a problem for me. Bottom line is I'm glad I got it and use it every day.

Customer Review: Great for the 3 months it lasted
Summary: 2 Stars

I was a fan of my Ipod nano (Gen 1). When it finally broke, I bought the Nano Gen 4 I had really beat up the Gen 1 and it survived a long time. I took pretty good care of the Gen 4, and loved it until it suddenly was not able to charge up after only about 3 months of service.

Since it was well within the 1 year warranty, Apple quickly shipped a package for me to put it into and I mailed it back to their repair center. To my surprise, Apple shipped it back with a form letter stating that I had misused it and checked off a box that I had either exposed it to some form of contamination or immersed it in some sort of fluid (magically without tripping the immersion indicator). I know I had not done either of those, unless you consider normal dust as a contamination or air as a fluid.

(As a further slap in the face, the bottom of the form letter said that I would be charged $100 if I shipped it back to them again.)

I have switched to another player.

Customer Review: Warning - your accessories may not work
Summary: 1 Stars

This nano has two big probems for me. 1. None of my accessories will work with it. 2. There is no nano lanyard solution from apple or from anyone else yet and some are not planning on making one.
I have Logitech MM50 portable powered speakers - fabulous product with 10 hr battery life and a remote. All the prior generations are charged while inserted in the cradle but not the Gen4 nanos. Ditto for older 110V chargers, and for car chargers. I don't know if every product doesn't work but these don't.
Lanyard - The benefit of the nano is its small size. For me a lanyard, hangs around my neck and the in-ear sound isolating buds just reach from my neck to ears - so no cables to get in the way. Inside the shirt it is inconspicuous, outside its jewelry. The spacing between the power plug and headphone plug doesn't match any of the prior nanos - so none of the lanyard solutions work either. For me this is a non starter.
