Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod nano 8 GB Blue (3rd Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: cool little product...4.5
Summary: 5 Stars

After toying around with this little thing for a few days I feel certain I can report that Apple has made another excellent product. When these came out earlier this month, I have to admit that I was thrown back into the MP3 player market, despite already having purchased a black IPod classic 5.5 in May. I almost went with the $249 80 GB model but I opted for the 8 GB Nano instead. This thing is so tiny (it fits in my small jeans pocket) that I don't mine managing which 50 to 100 albums I want to carry with me. And I found that popping this out and flipping threw the cover flow of albums is quite enjoyable.

I also have to admit that I came extremely close to purchasing Creative's new player, which is also impressive. The SD expansion capability nearly had me sold and the Zen UI is nice. Actually the Zen Vision M's UI was better than the IPod's and I may have switched back over had it not been for IPod's new UI, which I think is excellent. The tweaks to the interface is the main reason I bought another IPod in the same year and having it on something that is as portable as the 3g nano is...well it's hard to get my head around.

The floating images that present the media in the selected plane is very nice and album art is slightly improved over the 5.5. Most of the settings are displayed in a similar fashion as previous models with an even more user centric ideal in mind. Photos show up quite nice and are reminiscent to their display in OS X and the new 2in screen and better resolution makes them look better than they did on previous nanos. Video comes off quite nice as well. They play just as seamlessly as they do on IPod classics and the screen display is better than expected for such a small device. The preinstalled games are much better (even though I gripe because I actually paid for Vortex for my other IPod) and forthcoming games for the classics and nanos should be pretty good.

One qualm....the lousy and sucky headphones. I knew they were pretty cheap when I got them back in May but I had no idea how degradable they truly were. I compared the sound quality of the headphones that shipped with my nano to the ones that came with my IPod that is a few months olds and I was shocked. It seems as though those headphones were made to slip in quality over time. Apple needs to do better in that area. Adding a few more accessories with their IPods wouldn't hurt either.

Overall....the 3g Nano is a great product, a near perfect digital player. A 16 GB version may have achieved perfection but then there would be no need for the IPod touch.

Customer Review: My first ipod is a winner
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first ipod and I'm not disappointed. Although my primary interest in an ipod was for music while exercising on the treadmill/elliptical, I wanted to be able to view video podcasts so I wanted an small ipod that could do both. (I developed an interest in video podcasts after visiting a site, http://www.ted.com/talks, which had a number of fascinating talks re innovation and the future.) When this ipod was released, I purchased one because it seemed the perfect compromise - able to handle both music and video in a small, affordable size. The only thing I dislike is 8 gig limit. Although i haven't reached that limit after several weeks, it won't be long. Users need to think about how much space they need (with more being better) and balance that against size. For example, the "classic" ipod offers more storage (and has good sale prices), but the con is the size. Another consideration for those that want video is the resolution of the picture. There can be dramatic differences between the ipod and cheaper mp3 video players. Try both out before deciding. I think the video on the ipod nano is pretty amazing. However, some folks who are visually challenged may need a larger video screen.
The one annoying thing about the design of the ipod is that because the headphones connect on the bottom side you can't set the ipod upright without a stand. When you want to view video, that's a real problem. For exercise, I cut out an ipod shape in the middle of a square block of styrofoam (with indented room for the ipod and the cord). When I exercise on a machine with a reading rack, I just place the ipod in the block of styrofoam on the rack. The plus is that if it falls it is surrounded by sytrofoam.

Customer Review: My current favorite of all the iPods!
Summary: 5 Stars

Of course, everyone knows that whenever you buy an iPod, soon after the geniuses at Apple will unleash another one which is better than yours. Even after seeing the 4th-gen nanos, I still think that this is the best iPod that Apple has made so far. It is basically all of the good things from every other one so far packed into the 3rd-gen nano, which is this one. It is very easy to use, for those of you who aren't familiar with iPods. It is very simple, and to the point. The lists of songs, artists, albums, genres, etc. are very organized and in a clear, easy-to-read font. The click wheel, I noticed, is a bit less sensitive than the 1st and 2nd-gen nanos. Unlike the first nanos, this one has the capacity for many types of video such as tv shows, movies and more. And the 8 GB (up to 2,000 songs) is just enough for me. I absolutely love the color blue also. The overall design of it is very appealing, and similar to the iPod classic. The battery life lasts a lot longer, usually about 24 hours when you first get it. One thing that I really like is the search, where you can search for anything on your iPod, like songs or albums. There are also several built-in games, or you could buy more on iTunes. I have had this iPod for almost a year and I am very happy with it. It is very durable, and it was able to hold up for several months until I got a good case for it. I would say to get this iPod if you want a reasonable price, a good amount of media on it, and all the basic features.

Customer Review: great ipod, bad package
Summary: 4 Stars

I love the new features of the 3g ipod, such as coverflow, video, and cuteness. I was confused about the half menu, half picture screen, I thought I would be able to see the menu by itself, but the menus always have album art next to them. This is my first ipod, and I have seen others, but I think this is the best so far for its size. The colors, proportions and size make it the cutest ipod yet. With my first use I was very happy, although I managed to drain the battery in a little over 24 hours with heavy use.

Why 3 stars? On the third day since I got it, it dropped off the table, was slowed by being attached to headphones, and hit the wood laminate floor. Since it was stopped by the headphone cable, it really only dropped 8 inches onto the floor. I picked it up and it seemed alright, but later I noticed a big ding on the bottom left corner, on the colored side. I thought the anodized aluminum would make it impervious to such scratches if only dropped a short distance. I'm very disappointed that after only a few days of owning it, it looks scratched up and rugged. The ipod still functions normally, but I should also mention that the stainless steel side shows fingerprints and gets scratched very easily. I suggest buying a case immediately, since I ordered one right after ordering the ipod, but it has still not come and in the time between the ipod arriving and the case arriving, the ipod is already scratched

Customer Review: Cover Flow is not what you think
Summary: 4 Stars

When I purchased my iPod Nano I was like "wow!" will be able to see the covers from every CD using the cover flow option. What was my surprise that to do that you must have an account on iTunes with a working credit card on one of the very limited countries that iTunes allows making downloads (about 20 countries and leaves everybody else out). After cracking my head out I found that I still could put the covers on my music, however you must do that manually cover by cover (I've done that for a week and still not finished) and not to have the archives checked with the "only read" option that Windows gives you, that was the part that was making me crack the head.

Moving on, second and final disappointment when converting videos to mp4 to be able to watch them on the iPod they loose their sound... Can't believe that!!! Ohh man!! I thought. I wanted to put my wicked Ænema Tool video on the device, and NO. After several attempts of converting the video and others just to prove I'm not stupid, came to the conclusion that the iPod converter just simply won't allow you to hear the audio on your video. Lame on the iPod for not letting you, and if indeed it lets you, lame again because of making it so hard to do.
