Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod nano 8 GB Black (4th Generation) [Previous Model]

Customer Review: I just got it today and I'm loving it
Summary: 5 Stars

I sold my 30 GB 5th Generation iPod that I had for two years and upgraded to this new 4th Generation Nano. I bought the red one off Apple's website (only place you can get that color) and it looks and functions great. The screen is crystal clear and you can turn it sideways for cover flow of all your music, watching videos, looking at pictures or playing games. If you get bored with a song and want to change things up, just shake your iPod (it takes some force, so it won't change if your exercising) and it will jump around your music library and surprise you. The 8 GB version is enough for me because I only use it for music, but the 16 GB is worth the extra $50.00 if you want more than 150 albums or a lot of videos on it. The genius feature is pretty neat as well. You play a song, activate the feature, and it finds other tunes that go good with the one playing.

I love this new iPod! I'm glad I got rid of my bulky one for this sleek looking design.

Customer Review: Proprietary Hardware Should Always Work!
Summary: 1 Stars

Apple controls the means of production of all their hardware, so there should be little reason for any product they sell to be substandard, because if you own the means of production, then there is never a reason why any product should suffer from flawed manufacturing and certainly not bad customer service, but Apple, as you will notice if you ever buy one of their products, is terrible with not only customer service but also occasionally with manufacturing flaws.

My iPod will not work with the latest firmware upgrade their iTunes installed on it, but what's worse is it will not restore back to its factory settings no matter how I try. It's useless with the current firmware. This is inexcusable. Apple could care less if you buy a defective product from them. They're too busy focusing on the next "big thing" to care about your old product you bought last year.

I had to throw my iPod away after only using it a couple times.

Customer Review: Accessible for the blind and visually impaired
Summary: 5 Stars

I never owned an iPod until I went blind a year ago. A friend who is a big Apple fan, discovered that the iPod Nanos have a function for a voice to speak the menus. He bought it for me and hooked it up to his computer. In the computer, you can turn on the talking feature, and even select the voice and rate. He put a bunch of music on it for me and I was using it easily. All the menus you see speak to me. The dial is easy to use and I can listen as I scroll. It tells me what song is playing, and every function is accessible. If you have a screenreader, you can hook the Nano up and make it talk to you. The new iPod shuffle also employes the talking feature, since there is no screen. Because of the Nano, I discovered that all of Apple's computers with Leopard include a screenreader. So I bought one and that is how I am typing this now. It is my mission to get the word out about Apple, and how wonderful they are in the accessibility arena.

Customer Review: Too many bugs!
Summary: 2 Stars

I have been using Ipods since they have come out and am very loyal to the brand. I purchased this nano for my husband, but we are very disappointed in it. First, it does not play in all Ipod-friendly devices. My car stereo has an Ipod connection and it plays my Ipod classic fine but will not recognize the nano. My husband had to search for a stereo for his car that would recognize it. Also, when he did find a stereo that recognized it, it doesn't charge it while playing it due to bugs with the nano so it dies on him frequently and he cannot listen to music for long. Also, when you shake the device, it skips to another song, which is fun, but not so fun when it is so sensitive it skips songs just from walking with it. If you are looking at buying an Ipod Nano, I encourage you to not get this generation and wait for a later generation and hope they have worked the bugs out, or buy an Ipod classic, which have always worked fine for me.

Customer Review: Amazing looks, bright screen. The iTunes interface is horrendous, the usability of the iPod could also be improved
Summary: 3 Stars

This is an incredibly small and appealing player. Looks are great. The sound quality is excellent. The screen is bright and clear. The build quality appears to be solid.

However...

The iTunes user interface has to be one of the worst in the industry today, especially one that accompanies a device as successful as the iPod. Any hopes of fine-grained control over the songs you sync to the iPod are dashed, nay, crushed, by the iTunes interface. Note to Apple: please send some of your software usability engineers to Google for a crash course. Probably heresy, but Microsoft also seems to do a better job in this department.

The iPod controls are not very clear on how to turn up or down the volume on the device. Which is surprising, given how the other functions are so obvious and intuitive.

Overlook these two cribs, and this is an excellent device. Well... almost.
