Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod nano 8 GB Black (4th Generation) [Previous Model]

Customer Review: My husband is a convert, now!
Summary: 4 Stars

I got my first iPod three years ago & have turned into an iPod addict. (I got the first model iPod video and have three Nanos since I am a long distance runner.) Over the past couple of years, I'd keep asking my husband if he wanted one. "NO" he'd say adamantly with a scowl on his face. Well this past Christmas, I went ahead & got him one (black, 8gig 4th gen), along with the cassette adapter, so he can play it in his new Jag convertible. ;-) I loaded it up with every artist & song I could remember that he'd like. He opened it up Christmas Eve & became mesmerized. I woke up Christmas morning & he was already up. I walked out into the family room & he's got the earplugs in & dinking with it. He also travels alot & has used it alot on airplanes or in the airport. It was a big hit & he's now a convert!

I've got a 1st gen, 2nd gen & 3rd gen Nano & love the look & feel of this one over the previous gens. It feels smaller in your hand than the 2nd gen but it's really only b/c the edges are smaller. (In the middle, the size is the same.) It's more scratch resistant than the 2nd gen & does not have the chrome backing that the 1st & 3rd gens have (looks nice but much like a stainless steel kitchen appliance, will show EVERY fingerprint.)

Since this is my husband's iPod & I almost never use it myself, I cannot compare using this iPod with using previous gens of iPods (IE accelerometer, etc.)

The reason I only gave this 4 stars is b/c it's not compatible with previous iPod charging cables or any alternate power sources (IE Battery packs, docking stations)that work great with all my other iPods. Apple! WTF???

Customer Review: Nice ipod nano 4th gen, but has siginficant problems
Summary: 2 Stars

The ipod nono 4th generation itself is nice. Good features, good sound and nice size and feel.

However, after a few months of use (we got it for Christmas) there are several issues:
1) If the battery is less than 3/4 charged, it goes into this infinite connect/disconnect cycle when trying to plug into the computer.
2) Apple support is not help and wants to charge to solve the design flaw.
3) the iTunes software is a very poor product and does not do the ipod hardware justice.

We have found that getting the battery charged using a wall plug in charger will then allow the nano to connect to the computer after the battery if full. But, this is a very strange situation, it wont connect because the battery is less than 3/4 full and it won't charge on the computer unless it connects.

Apple support just seems to want to charge to tell us that the problem is that we are using the ipod incorrectly. No help in resolving the problem and not very reassuring. This was my first apple product and will likely be my last, just based upon the support response.

As far as I tunes, it seems to me that it has one job in life, to sell you more music. It is required to perform many functions of the ipod (like deleting songs from the ipod) and is difficult to use. It seems that all paths lead to "send apple more money" as opposed to support the product and providing an easy way for customers to purchase what they want. The sales/function ration of the software seems much too high to bring the needed functions to the ipod user.

Customer Review: I-POD HEAVEN? WELL MAYBE JUST A VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY
Summary: 5 Stars

For someone who has never used an I-Pod before and had no intention of going past the technology of a CD, it's introduction hit me like a dawning of a new time.

My son of 35 decided it was time for his father to be introduced to one of the better things in todays life. The "nano" without doubt did not let itself down, not ever.

From the moment of turn on, to discovering all it's funtions, I can only say I was happy beyond words.

After mastering the display and loading a complete libary of sound and vision onto it, the thing still begged for more. "Where does it all go, one asks"

The sound and pictures quality is first class, as for "nano" he has found a new home in my shirt pocket, forever ready to deliver.

Five Stars, no complaints from this happy customer, worth every dollar and more. As for the group of friends who had the same view as me,"nothing after a CD thank you" they now treat me as a tech outcast, "Hey, what do they know"

Well here we are 3 weeks later and the i-pod has died, not through miss use, but from a dose of frozen screen. Since the first recharge of the battery, problems started to happen, no more tilting on the side for album flick through. The screen followed with no control coming from the click wheel, then finally it froze full time no more response.

The short period I had Nano,I grew to love it, this has not put me off this Nano, if fact I have ordered another. Anyway since last time the group have all invested in their own, cross fingers they are all working.

Customer Review: Fine player, weak upgrade
Summary: 4 Stars

The 4th Generation Nano is the most sleek and stylish yet. Apple has gone back to a design similar to the elongated 2G iPod and left the short stubby look of the last generation behind. The video screen is crystal clear, and we're reaching a point with 8GB and 16GB storage options where not many people will continue to need the hard drive versions unless they're using it for video.

For all it's techno glory, however, the newest Nano is not perfect. The accelerometer in the unit switches your player to cover flow mode the instant it is turned on its side. This means you can't adjust volume unless you turn it back upright and is definitely annoying. Fortunately, Apple has updated the operating system so that you can turn this off in the settings. A more serious flaw may be that these players are no longer compatible with the many docking station speaker systems on the market (and in use) and they will no longer recharge your iPod while it plays.

All in all the 4G Nano is a very good MP3 player. If you're a holdout looking for your first player, you can't go wrong here. If you own a prior generation , Nano, however, I can't say there is anything here that would make for a compelling upgrade. The only exception is if you're using one with a much smaller capacity and want to be able to carry more music with you. If that's the case, then it's well worth the price. But the new features feel more gimmicky than useful to the point that I've disabled all that I could.

Customer Review: Faulty product that Apple won't stand behind
Summary: 1 Stars

You'll be sorry if you get a lemon because Apple will simply leave you out to dry. They have their groves of fanatics who would buy an Apple branded turd for $500 so they have no need to take care of the customer. I have exclusively used Macs for 10 years now so I am not an Apple hater but this is the second iPod nano in my family to suffer a premature demise so I am incensed over the lack of quality in the iPod line.

I bought this iPod for my son for Christmas. He had the thing 5 stinking months and it no longer works! Now if he didn't take care of it I wouldn't raise such a stink but he BABIED this thing wiping it down and always putting it in a safe spot. One day it began leaking battery acid for no reason yet Apple claims "accidental damage." How? How does the average person who simply sits and/or lays down to fall asleep to music damage a battery encased in an aluminum shell? THEY DON'T your faulty product is too blame! But lo Apple's lack of customer support leaves us with yet another apple branded paper weight (and not a very good one at that!)

Save your money and buy a Zen for a third of the price. My wife's Zen went through an entire wash cycle and through the entire dry cycle only to still be working great! It may not have a shiny half eaten apple on it but at least it's durable and still works.

Oh well, there is my rant. I am sure no one cares but I feel a little better. Wait... APPLE YOU SUCK! Now I feel much better.
