Customer Review: Impressive iPod
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm impressed with this new iPod Nano Video 3rd Gen. Whew! Quite a long name.

I got this baby because of the size. Although my car stereo is mp3 capable, I wanted something I can still manage easily and bring anywhere.

My friends suggested I just get the iPod Classic or iPhone. But I didn't need the huge capacity. I just wanted some tunes to hum along with.

But with the video capability of iPod Nano Video, I ventured into converting DVDs and other videos. Here's a sumamry of what I got in:

DVD converted videos
1) The One (Special Edition)
2) Transformers
3) The Simpsons Movie (Full Screen Edition)
4) 40 Days and 40 Nights
5) Looney Tunes: Golden Collection, Vol. 1-5 - 20 Episode Videos

MTVs - 35 videos

MP3s - 900+, I didn't want to convert all my CDs in. I just want the latest ones and left the old ones in their CD format.

The downside I encountered is the Windows compatibility. When I bought this iPod last October, it required the latest version of iTunes. And what do you know... the latest version of iTunes is only compatible with Windows XP or Vista.

Unfortunately, my laptop is Windows 2000 Professional due to office standards and my home desktop is also Windows 2000 Professional. I had to borrow a friend's XP desktop.

After a few weeks, I saw winamp has an opensource group working on an iPod compatible plugin. I tested it and it worked. I think it even works better than iTunes. But that is another story.

So overall, I'm quite happy and impressed with the new iPod Nano. No regrets with buying it!

Customer Review: Lots of nice features - few annoyances and missed features as well
Summary: 3 Stars

I am not going to rave about the Nano and write about all of its glorious features because there are enough fan boys who have done that and will be doing that. I was a reluctant Nano purchaser because I could not find any other player that was best for what I wanted of it.

I researched a lot before buying the Nano. I was considering the Zune or the Sandisk Sansa View very seriously. I decided on the Nano mainly for two reasons:
1. Good integrated support for Podcasts
2. Audiobooks
For Podcasts the most comprehensive and easiest thing to use was ITunes. It syncs the Pocasts with the Nano very well. For the Sansa View you need to manage podcasts manually and for the Zune the podcast support is just developing.
I have listened to two audible books on the Nano so far and I liked the experience very much. The ability to skip chapters in the book is very nice.

Now for the stuff that I don't like:
1. You can not play all of the podcasts in a row. You have to select each podcast separately and play them. This is very inconvenient when you are working out or driving and you have to play the next podcast.
2. There is no recenlty played list. I switch from podcast to audio book to music and have to navigate the menu each time to pick up where I left off.
3. The click wheel is very difficult to use. I often find that I over-scroll on the menu and have to use very fine touch to highlight what I want.
4. There is absolutely no tactile feel for the darn thing. In darkness or when you can't readily look at the device (like when you are driving), it is very difficult to feel what you doing.
5. The included stereo ear buds are very poor for listening to music. They are good enough for podcasts and audio books.
6. The screen lock button at the bottom is very difficult to use because of how small and flush they are.
7. I have not found a way to just drag photos at random to the Nano. It seems like I have select the folders to synch with and I don't have control over what photos in that folder I want to copy.

Customer Review: Awesome!
Summary: 5 Stars

i just got my new nano a few days ago and i don't have any complaints except for the cover flow. i'm gonna need to spend a bit of time to get that organized so every single song is under an album cover, but it's not that important, it's more for show. also, the back is the polished stainless steel, so i put clear packaging tape on it (as a cheap cover) to prevent scratches since i just throw it in my backpack. i can't find any cases that i like, but it's only been out since September 5 this will have to do until i can get a hold of a clear plastic case. i love the large screen so i won't have to squint at the screen now (unlike what i had to do with the 1st and 2nd gen of nano)

i had a sansa before for a couple of months, but i got sick of that! i guess being stuck with my ipod mini for a couple of years got me so used to it. i gave the sansa to my boyfriend and just bought the new nano! i fell in love with it right when i saw it at the apple store and just bought it right there on the spot! it really is a great upgrade if you haven't gotten the 1st or 2nd generation nano.

if you're looking for an upgrade from previous (small) ipods, then this is it! or you can save 100 bucks more for the iTouch or 50 bucks for the regular ipod.

wow people! stop complaining about the ipod nano not having a lot of storage space! it's a NANO! not a REGULAR ipod! it's a modified version of the big ipod! get it? and plus you should know the features on the product before you buy it. i don't have a 10,000 song library and movies and videos to store on a device, but if you do then get the regular ipod. so the nano is perfect for someone who just wants some on the run music.

i was a little surprised that they changed some of the colors from the neon colors to the more "calm" colors. but if all else fails, just get the black one. i got the red one to donate 10 bucks to fight aids in africa.

Customer Review: Amazing
Summary: 5 Stars

My first iPod. Seems I waited for the right one. I knew it would be small, but this is tiny. I was using my phone as my MP3 but the earphone connection failed.

The features on this nano blow me away. I put a ton of music and several vids from youtube on it, more than 2.5GBs left still. (2 days of music and 6 hours of video). Hold switch is very nice. Picture quality is great. Reported highest quality iPod video yet. Looks amazing. Even has an alarm, so I just plug it into my stereo to wake up now to my music. Album art is nice, but you end up searching for a lot of it if you dont buy from iTunes. I just grab pictures of the artist for their songs.

Once you get used to iTunes (Must download online) it's easy. Who thought patience improvement was a feature? From my research iTunes has come a long way though. A lot of extra programs I have seen elsewhere are now included. At first Synchronizing seemed to take forever with all I put on it at first. But once I connected it to a USB 2.0 it went A LOT faster.

I was searching for nicer black earbuds, but see something bad about even the best ones in reviews. So far these white ones work great. I got this for snowboarding and the gym. They stay in perfectly. I noticed the lack in bass right away. But wait, the EQ takes care of that. Now I get to use my old CD-tape adapter for my car and large headphones when not active.

Only downside I see is the games. Apple has been adding more and more for this nano. But reviews show the controls are tough to master. I will likely buy one or tow.

So yes the 8GB is worth the extra money if you want to use any video. But if just music, 4GB may save you some money, but no color choices. Oh and it's not glossy black but a matte finish. Wheel looks BLACK. iPod looks dark charcoal.

Customer Review: I prefer the second generation
Summary: 4 Stars

I moved up to this version to get 8 GB instead of the 4 that I had. I have found that I prefer the older version (generation 2).

I prefer the 2nd gen for several reasons. I like the shape better and I like the size of the selection wheel. The 3rd gen selection wheel is 1/4 inch smaller than the previous version. Doesn't sound like much difference but you definitely notice it. I also find myself (almost every time) over-running my selection as I "wheel" through a list (no matter how much I anticipate it coming up). And in order to keep it small (and the screen bigger) Apple put the wheel right down at the bottom edge of the face. This makes it more difficult to place your thumb on the wheel and (something they probably didn't think about)this makes it extra difficult to operate when the iPod is mounted in a device, which most people use nowadays. So when I have my Nano in my portable charger/radio/speaker device, I can't reach the bottom of the selection wheel - not a great design.

It is not nearly as tough as the 2nd gen. You could throw the 2nd gen across the room (mine was) and it would barely get scratched. The 3rd gen has a chrome back that was scratched the first day in my pocket with nothing else in there with it!
I don't like the fact that they waste half the nice screen on the first part of the menu with random (yes random) album art that has nothing to do with the menu.

Yes the screen is very nice, but I think too small for video, unless it's for the occasional podcast. I would choose a larger iPod if you plan to watch movies. I didn't get it to watch movies so think the extra-large screen is a waste. But if you want to watch video on an extra small device then the nice screen makes up for the other negatives I mentioned.
