Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod nano 4 GB Silver (3rd Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Good for music, useless for podcasts Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this Nano to primarily listen to podcasts. When you listen to podcasts you usually, but not always, want to delete them after listening to them either in full or part way through if the podcast is not worth listening to.
The problem is that their isn't a way to delete the podcast tracks until you connect the Nano to a PC. It's an unbelievably bad omission. Here are the problems -
If you listen to the entire track, it will replace it with a later podcast in the series. But if you only listen to a piece of it, for some reason it doesn't.
And, even worse, if you haven't listened to it when the next podcast in the series comes out, it will still delete it without you having heard a word!
And here's the worst point... let's say that if you have 20 podcasts on the Nano, the listened to podcast is still available for listening, so if you jump around from track to track, you'll keep stumbling over the same podcast until you connect it to a PC.
Apple should have built in a single button delete, so if you hold a button down for a while while a track is playing it will DELETE it and start playing the next.
What was Apple thinking when they designed it? No much.
Customer Review: Apple still impresses me. Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned a 2nd generation iPod Nano for about a little over a year now, bought it back when the 1-gigs cost about the same as this new 4-gig with video. I loved the little thing; it was highly portable, flash-drive based, and sounded rather well given its and its headphone's size. The only aspect that disappointed me was its battery life, as many other past-gen iPod users might know of.
The new iPod Nanos with video still has the same characteristics as their predecessors, if not better. It's still flash-drive based and it's still highly portable. The sound it produces is just as good, if not, better. We are promised a 24-hour battery life, and though I haven't owned it long enough to test this implication, it seems to be doing great so far (the previous Nano I had was supposed to last 8 hours, but I got about 5 to 6 even when it was new).
It's a nice upgrade considering the one I had didn't have video (obviously), could only hold 1gig, had a battery life of only 8 hours, and not quite as small. So why only 4 stars?? Included with the iPod in the package is only a USB plug, a dock clip, and earbud headphones. Where's the pouch to protect it a little?? But no matter, it just takes a little creativity.
Customer Review: Was hopeful......but was dissapointed :( Summary: 2 Stars
The iPod Nano 4gb was nice to have at first...but then it crashed several times then repeatedly deleted all my album artwork. iTunes was also a terrible dissapointment, it duplicated every song I had, deleted my album artwork just as the iPod did, and I found it to run terribly slow.
Interface: The user interface on the iPod seems clunky and awkward in comparison to the Zune. The clickwheel isn't very responsive, and sometimes takes quite a bit of movement to respond.
Audio Quality: I was very suprised at how poor the sound quality was on this, I am able to play the same audio files with a generic mp3 player and it sounds better. I'm sorry Apple, but this is not acceptable.
Software: I thought iTunes was a nice music player, and I really like the way that it organizes all my music in nice neat folders :D. unfortunately I've had problems with the artwork as I mentioned before, and I also felt like the features weren't very well organized, like they tried to cram too many things into the program.
Overall, I'm don't think I'll be buying Apple for some time. I'll stick with a much more reliable product such as the Zune until Apple figures out all its major glitches.
Customer Review: Love it. Summary: 4 Stars
I never owned an ipod before until last year when someone gave me a shuffle for a present. I use it primarily for listening to podcasts and audio books.
When the new ipod nano came out I knew I had to have one.
After using it for a few days, I thought about upgrading to an ipod with a larger screen, but decided against it until some of the inevitable kinks are worked out and prices decline (hopefully). I mean, it's a big jump going from $150 to $250 for the next size screen.
The main complaint I have is that the scrolling goes so fast that you sometimes miss the menu you want. It will just take some getting used to. Also, if you want to play an audio book on slow, it has a funny sound. For the price Apple charges, a little pouch should be included to protect the unit. It would be a lot more useful than an Apple sticker!
As I wait (and I WILL get an ipod in the future with a larger screen), I'm so enjoying this little thing of beauty, to which I've added family pix and video. Sure the screen is small, but the resolution and detail are quite amazing.
I'm very pleased and excited about my purchase. btw, I'd give it a 4.5 star but there isn't the option.
Customer Review: A Downgrade from the 2nd Generation Nano Summary: 3 Stars
The 3G Ipod Nano is everything you'd expect or want from an Ipod: its small, sleek & has good sound quality. But as far as ease-of-use, its a downgrade from the 2nd Generation Nano. First, this version does not comme with Itunes software, so if you don't already have the software, you'll have to download it. Also, the Ipod itself is less user-friendly than the last version. The 2G Ipod had the "lock" botton on the top of the unit, and set in for easy use. The lock switch on the 3G is almost flush with the unit, and so small that you need to use a fingernail rather than a fingertip to move it, risking breaking it each time. Lasly, when in 'rest' mode (that is, you were listening to the Ipod, but not scrolling through the library) the 2G Ipod would list the name of the song playing & the number of songs remaing on the current album/playlist, etc., so you'd know, without having to scroll, how many songs were left in your set. The 3rd Generation Ipod displays only a clock. You need to "unlock" the Ipod again & scroll through the music to see what's playing. Not a huge deal, but if you prefer just laying back & listening to your music, this version is far less user-friendly than the last version.
