Customer Review: A worthy upgrade
Summary: 5 Stars

The most important thing to consider about purchasing this iPod is what you're coming from or comparing it too. Sure, it may not be that much different than the 5th Generation, but for people that have held on to older models (I had a 3rd Generation) or for whom this is their first iPod, it's absolutely as good as it gets. Sure, the scroll wheel isn't perfect, but it's better than the significantly older models, and it's definitely better than nothing! The only real major that I can see from the 5g is the new hard drive capacity. When I was considering getting a new iPod, I knew I wanted space, but I wasn't quite willing to sacrifice the slimness of the 30 gig. Now that's not at all an issue and all my needs are satisfied. On top of that, the new cover looks terrific (not nearly as rounded as it looks in all the pictures) and the cover flow is nice, though not perfect. So I would say that if you've got a 5g, it would probably be wise to hold out for a bigger iPod touch or something, but if you've got an older model or nothing at all, then this is just about as good as it gets.

Customer Review: lots of bugs, dissapointed
Summary: 2 Stars

I had a 5.5 gen IPOD before but decided to get Classic this week since it has larger storage and is thiner. I got it Friday, but I have been disappointed with the issues I encountered.

1) The new IPOD already crashed once and I have to reboot it. I never rebooted my previous IPOD 5.5.
2) Sometimes I connect the IPOD with computer, the IPOD didn't show
the connected sign. Replug the cable didn't help and I have to reboot
the IPOD to make it connected.
3) I upgraded Itunes to 7.4.2 so that I can use this IPOD. The iTunes
told me there is a IPOD software version 1.0.1 available which I expect
they have some patches. But the upgrade failed because of some "1415"
error.

I believe all of those issues will get fixed in the following few months.
But I'm still disappointed, they should have done more testing before
putting it on market.

2 stars for what they did. I'll keep this ipod for 1 more week and will
return it if I still have problems with it.

Customer Review: Ipod 80G makes its own MAC-OS obsolete- Use it on a PC not a MAC.
Summary: 1 Stars

So I found a buyer for my 30 gig Ipod, completed the sale and ordered the 80 gig. Upon arrival I plug it in and was UNPLEASANTLY SURPRIZED that I have to UPDATE MY Apple TO- OS 10.4. WOW- THAT SUCKS!!!!! Now I have to buy a system upgrade and disrupt my life finding an upgrade to work my new IPOD????????? I wen't to the Apple store and called the useless Apple Care. WHAT A RIP! They all admitted that Apple didn't do a good job of notifying people about this.
Apple seems to update their systems so you constantly have to pay them for the upgrades. It is such a scam. I update Apple OS's and it leave all my peripheral scanners, printers and others into obsolesence. If it was as great a system as they think it is it would why not readily accept all the peripherals forever! Maybe even their own IPOD- HA!

So guess what- I now use my Apple Ipod on my PC. WHO'S LAUGHING NOW??? If Apple was so smart they would have kept me in their system or at least put in a correction to their own obsolesence planning.

Customer Review: If It Isn't A Mess, It'll Do Until The Real Mess Comes Along
Summary: 5 Stars

I never had an iPod and bought this one because...

Because I wanted the big storage capacity and did not mind the larger size. And, unlike other reviewers, I have only had to reset it once. What is a "mess" about it is the hegemony Apple has tried to establish over music management.

"You'll like our stuff so much you won't mind our abuse," is Apple's attitude and, so far, they've done well with it.

As much as I might resent being told that there is only one acceptable way to manage my music collection, I love this thing. The indexing is fantastic. I can get at whatever I want to listen to quickly, it holds so much, and it's hard not to like.

Cover flow is bogus, for sure. So - who needs cover flow, anyway? If you can read, you can do whatever you need with your music on this thing.

NOTE: My rating pertains only to music and pictures. I have no idea how this does with video.

Customer Review: Wow!
Summary: 5 Stars

Firmware update is in place, my OS was reinstalled, and still this ipod is crashing my computer, itunes, or simply sitting there indicating that it is syncing, and yet nothing happens and it never stops. It is beautiful in design, and I am not having the issues other pepople are having with crashes on the iPod itself, lagging, but the click wheel is certainly not sensative enough for my taste.

I was thrilled to have this, now, I am leery. I had originaly purchased the Nano 8gb w/ video, and it too had trouble. Thouroughly disappointed, and I loved my previous Nano 2g 8gb.

-Sigh-

update: 8-2010
I have found myself looking for these 3rd generation nanos. They are unique and the software updates have made them stable. I have replaced my star rating with a higher rating. I bought a nice used one with a pretty face, minimal back scratching for $50 on craigslist.
