Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod classic 80 GB Silver (6th Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: Um... Apple?
Summary: 4 Stars

My last iPod was a 3rd generation unit with 40GB capacity. Its performance over the years (and still in my car) is excellent. I replaced the battery last year and it's like new. However, my music collection is getting very close to exceeding the 40GB capacity, so I purchased an iPod Classic 80GB.

First, the good: The screen is excellent for both movies and photos. Audio quality is excellent, as expected. Battery life seems to be better than advertised. The new user interface was rather slow and cumbersome, but Apple has resolved that issue with the latest firmware update.

Now the bad: No Firewire support -- just the slower USB2 standard; older iPod games do NOT work with this model, so if you've purchased games for your 5th generation iPod, they will NOT work and you will have to purchase them again -- once the authors re-write them; your VIDEO accessories (e.g., TV output cables) will not work from your 5th generation iPod (though the dock from my 3rd generation works fine).

I believe Apple has made a BIG internal hardware change with this new iPod. With no backward compatibility for purchased games and no backward compatibility for video accessories (this includes the portable LCD screens that the iPod can connect to), Apple has got a potential for an uphill battle. Most of these things did not affect me because I had such an old iPod that didn't support games or video output, however many people upgrading from the 5th generation iPod will have a nasty surprise.

Customer Review: Beware J&R for purchases
Summary: 1 Stars

I had no idea there were different generations of the 80GB ipod, and J&R saw an opportunity to dump old inventory. My wife originally ordered the 30GB ipod from J&R through Amazon back in August. After much delay on the order, she called for an update on Sept 8. She was told by their sales person that the black was out of stock and so she asked if there was something comparable. He said he had an 80GB he could send for the same price ($249) - sounded to my like it was the new ipod.

That arrived in the mail the second week of September. Today, I walked into Circuit City to buy her the same 80GB ipod. I spent the same $249. I was shocked to see that the one I just bought is much thinner, lighter, the graphics are more advanced, and there are more games on it. It's a totally different ipod.

J&R did not inform my wife as to what they were selling her. They tricked her into thinking she was getting 80GB for the price of a 30GB when they actually sent her one of two (older gen) ipods they had lying around in stock, just when the NEW 80GB's hit the stores and the 30GB's were being discounted. The one they sent her is white with a gray dial, not silver with a white dial.

The ipod's themselves are wonderful, but beware what you're getting for the price when buying anything from J&R. They mislead and mis-inform people.

Customer Review: Don't Believe All The Reviews
Summary: 5 Stars

I've never written a review before, but felt I had to this time because some of the negative reviews here almost kept me from buying a terrific product. Specifically, I was concerned about comments about the scroll wheel not functioning properly, and about comments about accessories for previous iPods not working on the Classic.

Fortunately, I went to Best Buy and was able to play with their display model for quite a while. I used the scroll wheel extensively and found that I had no problems with it at all.

All my accessories for my iPod minis work with the Classic, including my AC charger and the adapter I use to listen to the iPod through my car radio.

I was surprised at how watchable video is on the Classic; I thought the small screen would be impossible. But, the picture quality is so good that I actually find that I would watch videos on this iPod while traveling. I've been converting video files and loading them onto the Classic with zero problems.

I've had no problems syncing the Classic with iTunes either. I wonder if those having problems are limited by computer resources. I have a HP Pavilion running XP with 2Gb of RAM.

All in all, I'm thrilled with the Classic and strongly recommend that folks check it out for themselves rather than just believing the reviews (including this one!).

Customer Review: This product rocks!
Summary: 4 Stars

THE GOOD: Good price, lots of HD for the price, has an equalizer, is basically easy to use; can be recharged via a USB 2.0 port on a PC. Also, it looks good (if you need a snappy-looking MP3 player), the touch-pad control is very convenient to use and it's good for audio books too.
THE BAD: No FM tuner, dinky earbuds, weird (incomprehensible to me at least) filing system if you're using a PC running Windows and you try to find individual files in the iPod using Windows Explorer. So, instead of being able to easily delete a few files here and there, it's easier to just restore (ie reformat) the HD and start from scratch. AND, the battery isn't meant to be changed by the owner - you're supposed to mail it back to Apple when the battery dies (although aftermarket batteries are available for the more technically adept owners).
OTHER POINTS: Uses iTunes software to upload & download from, won't support music purchased from anyplace other than iTunes. iTunes is pretty easy to use, make sure your PC can run iTunes 7.6 before you buy an iPod!
RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES: Speck ToughSkin rubberized case for iPods & a decent set of brand-name earbuds.
CONCLUSION: The pluses outweigh the minuses as far as I'm concerned - I love my iPod! If you disagree, check out the Microsoft Zune or Creative Labs MP3 players.

Customer Review: Disappointed with the iPOD - Not as intuitive as an MP3
Summary: 1 Stars

I did a lot of research on what type of MP3 player to buy before I bought this one. Most of the reviews had good things to say about it. However, I have found it and Apple's help to be a disappointment. Copying music was not as easy as copying it to my daughter's SANYO MP3 player (all I had to do there was select and copy). With the iPOD everything is a long process. Then came copying pictures. Low and behold, it did not maintain the folders I had in my PC but merged all picture into one folder. When I called the Apple help I was told that it could not copy pictures into folders, which I found unbelievable (and as it turns out, incorrect); so I talked to other users who guided me (somewhat) but when iTunes asked if I wanted to replace the pictures in the iPOD with the pictures in my PC and I said yes, it copied them again, instead of replacing them (now I have TWO copies). It's been a PAIN. Definitely not as intuitive as I would have expected given all the hype. Then there is the matter of not coming with a manual, even if just to cover the essentials, except the online version, and when you try to search for something as simple as "erase pictures/photos, etc" it says that it can't find it. I was considering buying an Apple computer to replace my PC, but this has definitely put to rest that notion.
