Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod classic 80 GB Silver (6th Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: bad reviews are misleading Summary: 5 Stars
I read the bad reviews here and they are all very particular and specific and odd (i.e., the problems these people are having will probably never happen to you). This version of the iPod is probably going to be the last in its line before they switch over completely to the iPod Touch version. But when I was trying to figure out which one to go with RIGHT NOW, the Touch is 400 freakin' dollars and it only has 16 GB on it! That's nothing as far as I'm concerned - maybe I'm spoiled but I like putting all sorts of things on my iPod besides my entire record collection which is around 35 GB right off the bat. The iPod "Classic" is not perfect or ideal (starting with its stupid name)- the ideal would be an iTouch with 80 GB or higher - but its pretty sweet. The games on it work really well once you get used to the wheel, as far as I know there are no games on the iTouch. The video looks really good on the iPod Classic too. As far as the meat is concerned which is the music, the cover flow works fine - all that stuff about it being too sluggish is b.s. - the sound quality is really good and it comes with about 20 preset EQ settings which are nice. Sync with iTunes is really easy and almost fun and in short its just really simple to use and does the job. My advice is to get this one and wait for Apple to release an iTouch with more GB later, which might take awhile but I just have a hard time paying 400 dollars for 16 gb just so I can move an album cover across the screen with my finger. p.s. yeah, the itouch has the wi-fi internet capability but I have trouble digesting what I read about it, like no java - that's a big setback, most of my favorite websites rely on that -otherwise I'm just looking at an incredibly shrunken version of a website and that doesn't really do much for me.
Customer Review: It's Good, But... Summary: 3 Stars
I had a 5th Gen iPod that I totally loved but had to replace it after it died. So I went out and got the iPod Classic. Boy do I miss my 5th Gen!
The video on the Classic is very good. I haven't had a problem with any of my movies, TV shows or podcasts yet. The only thing I don't like about the video is that it doesn't sort the music videos by artist and instead just lists them all in alpha order. I found that disappointing.
My two biggest complaints with the Classic is the sound quality and the clickwheel. The clickwheel response is completely slow and I've had it a few times where I had to turn it off and then back on to get it to respond. This gets frustrating very quickly. The audio quality (I've noticed this ONLLY on the music; not on video playback) is much lower than the 5th Gen. The sound isn't as clear and there is a lot of noise. I even bought a new set of headphones and it didn't help. This brings my star rating down quite a bit because it was the first thing I noticed with the Classic.
Overall good points of the Classic:
- The silver brushed metal design doesn't collect as many fingerprints as the white and black versions of the 5Th Gen
- The screen seems to be brighter, which makes the video more crisp
- The battery life is longer than on my 5th Gen
- The clover flow is a nice feature
Bad points:
- BAD audio quality as opposed to 5th Gen, Nano or Shuffle
- The music videos are not sorted by artist which makes the navigation through them annoying
- The clickwheel is HORRIBLE and will cause you great frustration right away
Overall, the 5th Gen is MUCH better. I will keep the classic and just pray that Apple comes up with a firmware update.
Customer Review: I love my iPod Classic! Summary: 5 Stars
I just upgraded to an iPod Classic from an iPod Photo. I considered going to the iPod Touch but I someday want an iPhone so the Classic is a good interim step.
I work in IT and see a lot of technology and a lot of "innovations" that often don't work or are poorly regression tested. In other words, the "new" versions often have bugs that the the "old" version did not. This is not the case with the iPod Classic.
I am constantly amazed by Apple's ability to get "get it right". I'm not saying the Classic is perfect but it is truly innovative and well executed. The Classic is slim, sturdy, and most importantly it just works. When I connected my new Classic to my computer; it recognized it immediately and just downloaded the music. No fuss...no reconfiguring... no reloading of anything...it just worked. Then I decided to move my iTunes library to my MacBook. The first thing I did was backup my music to a DVD. This took a few mouse clicks and about 10 minutes to complete. Then I uploaded it to iTunes on my MacBook, synched the new Classic and I was back in business. Some things did not synch becasue of DRM but that's not Apple's fault.
Some reviewers have said that the Cover Flow on the new Classic is a little slow to reload the cover art when you flip from page to page. I found this to be true as well, but it is by no means a problem. I also used my new Classic to keep myself occupied on a 6 hour flight last week. The video, while small, is clear and easy on the eyes. The small form factor is a big plus in the cramped airplane seat.
In summary, this is a truly innovative product, with nice upgrades to the software, form factor, and materials. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: A Mixed Bag...If 1st ipod it's great, if not WORST EVER! Summary: 1 Stars
I have a previous gen ipod (like millions of others), and like all of these people have many great secondary products to enhance my ipod (99% of which Apple doesn't make because they have never really been interested in peripheral products...until now). The 2 most important is a car connection which ties in through the docking-port to provide song/title info, and the second is through a Yamaha docking station which ties into the TV and supports music, video, and most importantly pictures (GREAT on an LCD).
Now that Apple has decided they want a bigger piece of the "Add-On" market they have designed the "New" 6 gen ipod to tie into only their products. Some of the secondary products still work for MUSIC ONLY, but my car dock no longer recognizes my ipod because the interface is not backward compatible. My Yamaha dock supports ONLY music, no video/pics/etc. Furthermore the games I purchased are no longer supported (APPLE DOESN'T EVEN SUPPORT THEIR OWN PRODUCTS FOR BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY). This is the 1st time this has ever happened for any generation.
So...if this is your first ipod, and you have never bought supported add-on products (which there are thousands), I would buy this and be happy, just make sure any add-on product you buy for your new toy supports the 6th generation.
If you are like me and have been enjoying your ipod for many years with great add-on products, find a refurbished 5.5 gen which is FULLY backwards compatible. Apple has created a product for the new customer, all other owners are now asked to throw away everything they have purchased in the past and start over will all new 6 gen products made buy guess who...Apple!
Customer Review: A great replacement Summary: 5 Stars
After I broke my iPod 3 years ago I swore I'd never go back, and drifted for several years through a series of lesser-known mp3 players. But after I mysteriously lost my last one, I thought maybe I'd spend a little more and get something I could watch at the gym as well as listen to while I do homework.
True, it could have more functions (my last mp3, a Sansa 8GB, had a FM radio and a voice recorder, plus a micro SD slot if I needed more space), and though pretty I still do think that Cover Flow is really quite useless. But it works extremely well, much faster than my Sansa in terms of skipping and finding songs. Seeing that the movies can really be watched and scrolling isn't a problem at all despite it being a touchpad, I felt more motivated to actually organize my music stash and find out how to rip videos (which, in turn, made everybody come to me for help ripping them; not a bad feeling when I'm usually technologically illiterate).
It fits nicely in the hand, and the weight is really nothing to worry about. With a silicon cover, I don't have to worry about dropping it anymore like I did with the first one. When you watch movies, the screen is crystal-clear and perfectly bright, each color beautifully illuminated (I really didn't expect it to be able to display such color). With the headphones, sound is very clear and the volume is also within the range I usually use it at. All in all, I'm very satisfied with what my iPod gives me, despite it being pricier than the last mp3 I had (but it's still a very good deal for the amount of space it has!).
