Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod classic 80 GB Black (6th Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: $150 for this???? You've got to be kidding. Get a Zune!! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this last year believing the hype. People are always talking about how great the iPod is, so I figured why not try get one so i can have tunes in my car.
This thing was nothing but trouble after i bought it.
My first complaint is iTunes which I know I'm not alone when I say iTunes is a huge resource hog and will bog down your computer, so don't plan on doing anything else besides using iTunes when you run it(My operating system is Windows XP Pro SP2 with almost 2GB ram). After about 30 minutes I finally figured out how to add music already on my PC. Apple sure didn't want it to be easy did they. I'm guessing they did it this way because if you can't figure it out they assume you'll buy it from iTunes. I could go on and on about iTunes, but I have more complaints.
Has anyone had as much trouble as I did with the touch scroll feature? At first I thought this was a really cool feature, and I liked it. After about a week though, the problems ensued. Why does the scroll have to be so sensitive? If I move my thumb just the slightest milimeter on the music track I want to listen to, it goes to the song after or before(depending on whichever way I accidentally moved my thumb). Might I say how much I really hated this feature in my car because I always ended up having to use the arrow key buttons to get to the right song. I think I have arthritis in my thumb from all the scrolling. OK moving on.
The hold button on the top of the iPod-BAD IDEA. At first I had no problems with the hold button, but after a few weeks the button would be set in the off position and still the iPod would stay on hold. I ended up looking on Google to find a fix for this, but nothing I tried worked for me. Why couldn't they have made the hold feature like a phone where you push a combination of keys for it to work?(ex. press * then OK) I have a 30gb Zune and the hold button was designed with an actual clicking mechanism on the top, trust me when i say its 100x better than the iPod's. People have said on many forums once they were able to stop the hold button from staying on they actually removed the hold button...(no comment)
All in all the iPod is far from perfect, but the only thing I will give it credit for is its battery life Then again I've only owned it a little over 7 months so knock on wood. I'd highly recommend the 30GB Zune over the iPod because it has an FM tuner, wireless, a bigger screen, plus the interface is a lot easier to use. Did I mention the Zune is a lot cheaper? Sorry to sound so biased towards the Zune, but I've had both and I know where my bread is buttered.
Customer Review: All I'll Ever Need........ Summary: 5 Stars
Been using the iPod Classic for about a month now. I'm completely amazed. Not to mention the insane deal Amazon has. 20 dollars below retail, no tax, free shipping.....A++mazon.
For starters it looks amazing. The front aluminum cover is similar to my old iPod Nano 2G (black) which by the way repels scratches like a champ. The back is the dust/smudge/scratch/ collector which made me invest in a black leather folio case.
80 gigs really comes down to ~74gigs right out of the packaging. Which is a bummer no doubt. But thats a universal hard drive conspiracy of its own.
I love the coverflow option. Start downloading your cover arts now because it is a beautiful new feature. It's a little sluggish at first but it's not as drastic as some of these reviewers make it out to be. Coverflow is a nice way to browse through your album collection to find something that you would miss on a 2 dimensional typed screen. It's not for speedy gonzales trying to move from ABBA to ZZTOP in 3.5 seconds. I mean come on....It's a hardrive, even my computer lags a little when I run coverflow in iTunes.
The movie/music video aspect of this is great but I wont be using it much. I put one movie on it (Blow with Johnny Depp) and it plays beautifully but for me the screen is too small to watch a 2 hour movie on. I also believe music videos/MTV/VH34 are fake, marketed pieces of trash that should be banned because they are destroying music and everything that it stands for but thats another story.
I like how you can now shuffle songs/albums straight from the now playing screen, but how come you can't "Repeat". Whats up with that? Hopefully that'll be an update.
The 3 new games are nice, will I ever use them? Not really. I might let a nephew mess with them during church or something but that wasn't a selling point for my purchase.
Calendar, Clock, Notes, Contacts, Alarm are great. I just wish there was a way to type in screen. I wouldn't write a novel on the iPod but it'd be nice to be able to save a name, number, on the go....
Anyways the best thing about this device is being able to hold my entire music collection in the palm of my hand with a stable, reliable player. One thing I haven't mentioned is battery life. Which will probably be an update to this review later because I haven't had to recharge this yet. (I'm constantly adding music and making changes to songs, artist, albums...so I havent drained the battery yet)
Top of the line. I'm satisfied.
Customer Review: Not as bad as people are saying. Summary: 4 Stars
ok, so people are griping a lot and worried apple is flopping and giving their customers the old one finger salute. I bought this, trying to be as open as possible, and this is what i found.
The click wheel- Not as bad as some are saying. It is not perfect, but after an apple update or two it should be fine
- Cover flow. Its true, it doesn't update fast enough; however, i don't care much for the concept and will probably never use it... I imagine most will be the same.
-Battery life- Great!!! what more can you ask for?
- Incompatibility with 3rd party accessories... ok, understand this gripe, but lets be honest, not all your computer accessories for the 90s fit this nice new HP you just bought. When you think about it, we should have expected this some time. granted i have less to gripe about than others since i haven't had an ipod since my gen 4 died 2 or 3 years ago, but if you search the net, I'm sure buying a new cable hear, or there wont kill you. Then there is the problem with games not transferring over. Its true, the games you bought for your gen 5 video wont work on the classic.... Its 5$... is it really that big of a deal? if i wanted cheap i would have gotten a zune, and if your really that concerned, maybe you should. I think a lot of the gripes we are seeing are a little overdone, and if you really think about it... look deep deep down inside of yourself, you will see it makes sense. lets look at the pros
- 80 gigs at $250... it must be my birthday
- that new brushed metal finish, mmm mmm mmm, it just feels nice. not fingerprints either.
- regardless of what i have read on a few forums, all my cover art transfered in rather well (minus a few rare cds that i didn't expect to show up)
- the amount of time it takes to charge is great!
- its not made by Microsoft
- itunes is the MOST intuitive way to handle mp3 tags that i have seen inside of a mp3 player client
---
cons
the click wheel is a bit awkward at first when compared to previous generations BUT it is not as bad as others will make you think
no case, but who cares, you can get em cheap off ebay
---
So if your like i was and are really worried about getting this because of all the bad reviews, dont worry... remember, no piece of technology is perfect in its first days, it takes a few updates to get it righ, and im sure Apple is working hard to perfect its product and continue to dominate the MP3 market (for good reason too)
Customer Review: Best MP3 Player for Podcast Junkies Summary: 5 Stars
People are so picky with the reviews here is is amazing...
I decided replaced my Zen 30G player with the 80G iPod classic. The Zen is a great player but I have always preferred the scroll wheel for no-look menu and volume navigation. Also, I have always used iTunes for my Podcast catcher. I really wanted the tight integration with iTunes so I could better track new/unplayed podcasts versus old/played ones and just sync it with no fuss. The Zen software is simply no where near as complete as iTunes for managing Podcasts. There are other great podcast/RSS catchers out there but none of them are 100% integrated with the hardware the way that iTunes is with iPods.
That integration is the main reason I picked up an iPod. For about the same price as a Zune, you do not get the radio but you do get the best Podcast management in the biz.
On to the player...
This player is perfect for the way I use it. I listen to a ton of podcasts in the car, on the go, at work, and on my home stereo. I don't listen to podcasts when I work out but it I did I would NOT recommend the classic but a flash based iPod instead.
The classic has great sound, great battery life for music, and the best no-look volume control etc. Its also about 10 times faster to go from no power to playing than my older Zen:M was which is great. 80G is way more than I need but its nice to know if I go on a trip I can put a bunch of movies on there etc.
As far as the Cover Flow not working well, thats true but I would never use it anyway. For podcasts smart playlists are the only way to go. You can have playlists of Recent or New podcasts, unplayed, random etc. And the last played and play count synchronize with the iTunes which is critical and its all fairly easy to set up.
I also have it docked to my home theater which is a nice way to watch some video podcasts and charge it up. Having tons of accessories is also a huge benefit to getting any iPod. Sometimes being popular has real benefits. Take a look for Zune accessories and you will see what I mean.
As an example of how well this product works for me, I bought the iTouch and returned it because its simply to much of a pain to navigate and change volume if you use it in the car. Simply to clumsy for just listening to music. So if you are a podcast fanatic, and want the best playlist management and no-look controls, this is a great way to go.
Customer Review: I couldn't live without my iPod. Summary: 5 Stars
I couldn't live without my new iPod. I recently upgraded my problem-free 4th generation 40 GB iPod to a 6th generation 80 GB classic introduced by Apple on September 5, 2007. The 6th generation iPod features a sleek, slightly thinner body, improved battery life (up to 40 hours of music playback and 7 hours of video playback), and a front plate made of anodized aluminum instead of polycarbonate plastic. The user interface offers more graphics and something new: "Cover Flow." Although I have more than 10,000 songs on my 80 GB model, there is sufficient storage for up to 20,000 songs. For use with a PC, the 6th generation iPod requires a minimum Windows WXP SP2XP operating system, (unlike my 4th generation iPod, which required a minimum Windows 2000 operating system). Initially, the 6th Generation iPod lacked sound quality in the mid range, but a February 6, 2008 Apple firmware update (1.1.1) has reportedly resolved this issue, improving sound quality. The 6th generation iPod features:
1. Cover Flow, which enables a user to browse music by album cover. One minor complaint: on my iPod, not all album artwork appears in Cover Flow mode.
2. Music, organized by playlist, artist, album, song, genre, composer, and more. I primarily use my iPod as a music storage device, and thus far it provided me with problem-free performance.
3. Movies, may be purchased on iTunes and then viewed on this iPod (for up to 7 hours).
4. TV Shows, Podcasts, Audiobooks, and Games may be purchased on iTunes and then synced to this iPod.
5. Photos, the iPod classic holds up to 25,000 photos.
6. Tech Support. I have an Apple store in my neighborhood, and the staff there has prodided me with excellent in-person technical assistance in transfering my music library from my Windows 2000 Operating System to my Windows XP Operating System. They have also been very helpful in answering all questions I have relating to my iPod. Apple telephone technical support, however, has been less helpful on occasion.
I back up my iPod's music library to a highly-recommended Western Digital WDXMS2500TN Passport 250 GB USB Portable Hard Drive, which is roughly the same size as my iPod.
