Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod classic 80 GB Black (6th Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: Disappointing considering Apple is supposed to design things so well
Summary: 3 Stars

This is my 1st IPod and the only mp3 players I have used are the (much smaller) Sansa Clip and the Insignia Sport.

First, the good, then the bad:

1) The Ipod is almost the only one around that has LOTS of gigs, and of these big gig models, the Ipod is the best.
2) The Ipod plays .wav's whereas many others do not. (Would be nice, though, if they'd play .flac's and .ape's.
3) The Ipod lets you store other files (besides music or photos) on it.
4) The menus are relatively easy to navigate.
5) It sounds as good as most other mp3 players.

Now the bad, of which, unfortunately there is much more:

1) The ITunes software is not at all intuitive or user friendly. Apple built its reputation on being intuitive and user friendly but now Windows has surpassed it. I am very computer savvy and yet I found myself opening up ITunes and saying things like "Okay, so now HOW do I get to this?" And "How do I do that?" Usually I can just figure it out easily but with ITunes I found myself having to really struggle to get things done.
For example, the software that comes with the Sansa Clip is not great, but it was more intuitive and easier to use, better organized. So : ITunes sucks.

Oh, let me also note that it took a LONG time to install ITunes. Most programs of this type take about 2 min. and this must have taken about 10. No big deal, but it must be very bloated or just doesn't follow usual Windows install protocols.

One of the things I don't like about the ITunes software is that I can't just see a list of the Albums I have, it seems. Instead all I can see is all the songs listed, organized according to albums. I'd like a + and - type Folder View where I could see all the albums at a glance, not a list of songs organized according to albums.

2) This IPod has no radio. If a cheap $40 Sansa Clip can include an FM radio, why doesn't the IPod include one???

3) It's VERY heavy and relatively large. Is heavy metal really required to make this thing durable? Wouldn't a durable unbreakable plastic cover work just as well and be much lighter? Just sayin'. It's very heavy. Too heavy IMHO.

4) The navigation wheel is very awkward to use. Maybe this depends on how much sweat people have in their hands or something? My hands tend to be quite dry, and I find it difficult to get the wheel to go the way I want it to go and pinpoint a certain menu item. I would much prefer big buttons that you actually push and a wheel that turns.

5) One cannot delete things right from the unit. Why not? The cheap Sansa Clip allows you to delete things right on it. It would be handy like when you find a song on a album you really hate, you could just click a couple buttons and it could be gone.

6) I was surprised that when I got a "silver" one that it is not ALL brushed metal like the front, but instead the back is the worst type of shiny chrome that attraacts fingerprints like crazy. Not a deal breaker, but again, where is that great Apple design?? Why not make the whole thing brushed metal, not shiny fingerprint chrome?

7) Reading about the Sony 16 gig unit (which I would have bought had it been priced better), it seems that not only does it have much better sound than the IPod (according to many reports), it also has the ability to drag folders of music right onto its icon on one's hard drive (AND RETAIN song title info!) and the unit has a "Folder View" so one can find that folder/album by going into folder view. I think ALL mp3 players should have this ability. Sony was very smart and "thinking outside the box" to incorporate this feature into their player.

So I definitely am not "having a love affair" with my new IPod. Instead I see it as only a "marriage of convenience", that will do until a hotter, sleeker, better babe comes along.

The Sony 16 gig unit costs around $290 so that's about $18 a gig. The Ipod 80 gigger cost me $245 so that's about $3 a gig. BIG difference! So I have to say that the IPod is a MUCH BETTER DEAL. If the Sony were down to around $100 I would have bought it instead, even though 16 gigs isn't really as big as I would like. But for the price difference, I had to go with the IPod.

Now, let me beat you to the punch:

I know you can ADD a radio. But you shouldn't have to buy an add-on.

I know the ITunes software isn't THAT bad, it just takes some getting used to.

I know it's still not THAT big and heavy, so it's still portable enough to carry around.

I know that the chrome fingerprint issue is resolved by putting it in a case, which I have done.

So all in all, the IPod isn't "that bad" (assuming it does not freeze up, die or give me other technical problems, which I am somewhat wary of, based on quite a few reviews where these have been reported).

It's just that
1) I expected more - much more - from Apple; and
2) I would have liked to have been IN LOVE with my new IPod instead of just seeing it as a marriage of convenience.

But all in all, it is for now the best unit for the price.

However, if Sony were to make an 80 or 160 gigger and bring their price down to competitive terms with the Ipod Classic, I would switch to Sony in a New York minute. If you read the reviews on Amazon and other sites, you will see that Sony has about 98% positive reviews whereas Ipods only have about 75% positive reviews and many more horror stories.

So Apple had better get its butt in gear and start "thinking outside the box", being creative again, going back to early Apple principles of making things user friendly and highly functional and practical.

If they'd make some of the changes I've suggested above: Durable plastic case, physical buttons and wheels to navigate with, a Folder View, add a radio, make it easy to delete songs or albums right from the unit, make the ITunes software easier to navigate, I would buy a big 500 gig unit when they come out with one.
