Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod classic 160 GB Silver (6th Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: funny little thing
Summary: 4 Stars

this is my nth mp3 player, so far the highest capacity I have had. i had been on the outlook for an Ipod video and was so close to had acquired the 80 gb 5.5 when this was released. at the same price as the 80 gb used to be. i will put it plain and simple. i just love the product, though admittedly there are a few things that could had been better.
i have read many of the other reviews of the product, and I just can't understand all the whining and complaining ...
yes it is true, a bigger screen, especially for video could had been introduced, but I hate to be the one to burst the bubble, but that would mean "Higher Price" as well, and the unit ain't exactly on the cheap end as is. surely the per GB cost is outstanding, but the tag of $350 for an average john dow ain't peanuts. say you absolutely want the Ipod to have a bigger screen, without sacrificing the "BRAND" trend, try out the touch now available with a fifth the capacity of this unit, but with the beautiful price tag of only $500. you do the math.
okay, the point I am a bit iffy about is the so called cover flow. there are just too many of them that shows nothing but black screen, thou I have the actual album art downloaded and synced via Itune. the funny part is that the album cover is actually stored somewhere in the ipod cus the pictures do show in the Main menu, but won't in the cover flow.
the best feature so far that I have observed with this unot os the batery life... just magnificent, outstanding, I can walked around with my IPod in my pocket for almost 3 weeks without having to charge it, that is with an average of 3-4 hrs daily play back.
as far as the video part is concerned, there is one feature that even exceed the most advanced dvd and dvr units. say I play movie "A", then I turn off the unit, three days later I feel like watching Movie "B", and then Movie "C,D ....." etc. All of the sudden I wanna watch the remaing of movie "A", all I do is open the movie, and olah ... starts right where we left off a week ago. no spooling or ffw needed. of course I would had liked the bigger screen too, but not by sacrify of capasity, and certainly not by price addition. I found an other way around getting a bigger picture to view on.
one drawback that I would agree with the other review ppl is the limitation that Apple have incorporated on this edition of IPod Video Player which has rendered all previous Video docks and cables useless. this is the first time I have incountered such a huge incompatibility with previous version of SAME Branded Product. this is one thing I cant understand the logic to.
but beside that, I can't say I am diappointed in my choise to wait before jumping on the IPod Craze ... cus I love my unit.

Customer Review: So, tell me why this isn't five stars again?
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm just not seeing the flaws reported here or elsewhere.

I have 160Gb -- effectively 154Gb but I'm okay with that -- and I can watch videos, listen to music, see my photo albums, all without much incident. The iTunes interface isn't perfect but you know what? It syncs everything I check or uncheck, and it's very easy to get the iPod to just work right out of the box. My anecdote cancels out yours.

Coverflow. I love it. Do I like having to give my credit card over to Apple so I can get cover art? No, so I didn't. I can get cover art for free using Tag/Rename. And since I don't browse by album cover -- with about 60k songs, I'd never find anything, and there are no album covers for some of my Brazilian music -- I really don't suffer from this. Granted, if you offer 160Gb of space, you have to engineer the software to handle potentially thousands of albums, but I feel they will fix this in time. It's not the hardest problem in the world.

The same jog dial from my Wife's 3G iPod, only a little more tactile feel, works just as well, probably better for someone like me with caffeine-induced twitchiness. Volume is very good, but the EQ is largely annoying so I tend to output with no EQ and let the amplifier handle it, e.g. my car stereo or my PC.

And let me say something about the iPod with respect to the Zune. The Zune, for its WiFiness and video abilities and whatever, cannot function as a hard drive. I can skip the whole iTunes scenario, plug it into my work laptop, fire up Winamp, set the library scan onto my iPod, and the same 11k songs I'm listening to in the car come with me inside. Plus, I get Winamp's control over playlists, etc. The ideal solution for me.

Finally, I checked out video on it, and it looks really, really good. Since video conversion is almost a necessity for most people, just grab a conversion program and let it worry about getting video files in the right format for your iPod. Stop letting the tail wag the dog, and make your files compliant with your devices, not the other way around. In the end, your PC can play anything, so if you've adopted an iPod, then convert to an iPod friendly format and move on.

Sheesh. It holds 60,000 songs and can play all day, in color. What else do you really need? Five stars.

Customer Review: Good, not great
Summary: 4 Stars

I recently bought a 160GB Classic because I'd filled my 2 year old 5G 60GB classic. I'd hoped that it would be as good or better in every way, but with room for a lot more music. If only life were so simple...

I got the extra space I needed. It works with my existing iTunes library. The interface is familiar (although I wouldn't call all of the changes improvements). I like the new brushed metal styling. I've read that the battery life is improved.

I'm not thrilled with the sound quality - I prefer the sound of my old 5G 60GB iPod. The new Classic's sound is fine for casual listening through earbuds or middle-of-the-road headphones. But if I'm really paying attention to the music, or am playing it through a good stereo or headphones, the new Classic's sound is - to my ears - more mechanical, more fatiguing to listen to than the 5G iPod. I prefer the stereo imaging of the 5G. Vocals have more body in the 5G. I also find the Classic's sound to be a bit brighter, which some people might find gives a more detailed sound.

All stereo components have their own sound, and the new Classic is no exception. I listen to a lot of jazz, blues, vocals. I might have a different opinion if I listened more to other kinds of music. My iTunes library is full of music that I ripped from my CD library, using Exact Audio Copy and LAME mp3 encoding software (VBR/V4 compression if that means anything to you).

I've decided to keep the Classic because I want the extra space and because I'll mostly use it for casual listening. It's fundamentally solid and does what I expect it to do. If I planned on using it as my primary music source, to play through a good stereo, I would probably have returned it and found a way to make do with my 5G.

Your mileage may vary - you'll only know by trying it for yourself. If sound quality really matters to you, I would recommend that you be sure to run it through its paces while you still have the option to return it. If you don't need the space and aren't wedded to iTunes, you might find a better-sounding alternative.

Customer Review: Big Disappointment
Summary: 3 Stars

From what everybody had said about past ipods I thought I would love this thing. Apple has a great reputation for putting out high quality products. This product, unfortunately, falls short. First off is the bugs. Even after downloading the third firmware for this product there are many of them. If you are on the "now playing" screen when you try to sync your ipod with your computer, it invariably freezes up. Also, some files which are on the ipod (and will play in Itunes) somehow do not play on the ipod. The ipod just sits there as if it is going to play it but it never starts up. Sound quality is also a big issue. I'm certainly no audiophile but the headphones put out horrible sound quality, much worse than the cheap Sandisk MP3 player I have. Mids and lows are very distorted. I happen to have had a pair of Sony MDR-XD200 and these seemed to have solved the problem. Most likely, you will want to invest in some decent headphones if you buy this player. I ended up buying a pair of Sennheisers and a pair of V-Modas.
As for positives, I've never had any problems with video playback. I have about 20 or so full length movies on this thing. I like the cover flow feature even though some have commented on how slow it is. Storage is also a big plus and if you have a large music collection, this is the only game in town. Right now, Zune only makes an 80 gig which is just not big enough for my collection. Buy this product if your collection is huge but look elsewhere if you can go with something with a smaller capacity.

Update after newest firmware version (1.1.1) installed (4-30-08):
All issues related to my initial complaints of this product have been fixed with the newest firmware. Works great and this is finally the product that it should have been when it first came out.

Customer Review: Another five star review

This iPod replaces a Creative Zen Xtra 60 Gb MP3 player. The Zen started having cross-talk on all the tracks really bad, so I knew the hard drive was on the way out. Worse, I had recently synced the Zen, so all the files on my PC were corrupted as well. So, before I set up this iPod, I downloaded iTunes and did a thorough scrub of my PC-based audio files, and ended up tossing all of them. Fortunately I had a backup from about 3 months ago on my big USB drive, so I recaptured all the files and set up iTunes. The iPod took about an hour or so to sync with the approximately 3,500 files. No problems so far with any of them.

When my wife bought her iPod 5G, it came with a small slip-case and was in a relatively large box. The new 6G iPod Classif comes in a box about the size you get an order of checks in. In the box is the iPod, a sync cable, and the earbuds. Period. Not even any "special offers."

I noticed that the sound quality wasn't as good, but I was using the earbuds that came with the iPod. I got out the ones I was using with the Zen Xtra and the sound improved by a huge amount. I still think the Zen has better sound, but the iPod is acceptable, especially for the noisy aircraft environment where it will get the most use.

Two things I don't particularly like about the iPod compared with the Zen Xtra. First is that I can't play the iPod with it plugged in to a PC for charging. That was possible with the Zen, and I took advantage of it. Second is that the Zen Xtra had a removable, replaceable battery. I never ran out of power. What I will do with the iPod is to use my iGo auxilliary power pack with the iPod tip. That will get me through the longest airplane ride I am likely to be on.
