Customer Review: Be careful buying time capsule - dropped connections
Summary: 1 Stars

If you are about to purchase a time capsule - do your homework. We were excited to have a wireless router, print server and external hardrive all in one and ordered a time capsule direct from Apple as soon as we could.

Getting it to actually work has been a nightmare. The reason we switched from PC to Apple was for the supposed simplicty and intuitiveness of the OS and peripherials. It has been nothing but simple. Yesterday we spent over 5 hours on the phone with Apple ultimately getting directed to the chief technical troubleshooter of time capsule. He had to walk us through numerous manual configurations. He also explained that the name of the time capsule can not exceed 26 characters including the deault "time capsule" that gets attached to any name. I have a long last name and this affected our connectivity for hours.

Thankfully, with the dedication of the technician, the timecapsule worked as advertised -- for a few hours. Since then we have intermittent connectivity and only 2 time machine back-ups.

Make sure you check the Apple boards and read up on the very large number of experienced Apple users who are having serious problems with the time capsule and are returning them. Apple needs to release a fix or some specific instructions immediately.

Great concept, but BUYER BEWARE.

Customer Review: just like a pretty woman . . . hot, makes you wait & looks > function
Summary: 4 Stars

have been using the 1T version for awhile with the firmware update with both Leopard & Vista, here is my impression:

(+) cool design. no power brick. run silent.
(+) works well with Time Machine, wireless data streaming with "n", network printer.
(+) works very well with VISTA.

(-) can run very hot, especially if copying files & running continuously. gets hotter the longer it runs.
(-) TM back up is slow both wire & wireless. first back-up of 30G took literally more than one day. took it to Genius bar --> nothing wrong . . . . incremental back-ups are faster.
(-) TM back-up utility is questionable because: (1) slower than normal copying, (2) takes up more space, (3) who needs hourly back-up, (4) no catastrophic corruption with Leopard (or Vista for that matter).
(-) throttles internet speed.

*** because of the (-) and my network-enabled printer, i now mainly use it as a wireless back-up hard drive and for streaming video/music and only turn it on when need to.
i used Winclone & SuperDuper to back-up my newly installed Leopard & Vista partitions, transferred them to TC, then use TC as my wireless data back-up hard drive.
i know i haven't used TC's full potential. but Apple needs to maximize TC's full potential with either firmware or software upgrades.

Customer Review: Simple and Elegant
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered a 500GB TimeCapsule from Amazon last week and received it in only 2 days using free Super-Saver shipping! Bravo Amazon!

I bought the TimeCapsule along with the Mac Box Set (the 3-in-1 Apple software collection that includes OS 10.5.6, iLife 09, and iWork 09). Installing all the software updates and the TimeCapsule to my 2005 model iMac G5 was quick and easy. I can't believe I had put off adding a backup hard drive and a wifi network for so long. I've used Macs for over 20 years and have never had a hard drive failure, but with all the photos and music that I've compiled over the years I knew it was in my best interest to have a backup in place just in case. And, after getting an iPod Touch over the holidays, I was really interested in finally setting up wifi.

The TimeCapsule is typical Apple: A simple and elegant design that is both functional and appealing. It's also space saving since it combines both a wifi router and an external hard drive into one clean unit. Apple's Airport and Time Machine software are both easy to use.

The TimeCapsule is not the cheapest way to go, but its price is very competitive, especially considering the ease-of-use and elegant all-in-one design. Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Worst Apple product ever? Even worse than the hockey puck mouse? Yes.
Summary: 1 Stars

The Time Capsule is a great-sounding product on paper. Wireless backups to a centralised hard drive, and automated too? Yes, please. Let's take all the hassle and even all the thought out of backing up data. Wonderful idea.

Wonderful idea, yes. Terrible implementation. The first backup took more than three days of wrestling with esoteric error messages, inexplicable hangs and stutters, and just plain weird behaviour on the part of the Time Capsule. After seriously considering sending the product back then and there, the initial backup finally succeeded.

All was smooth sailing for about a month and a half. Until yesterday. Now, backups fail to even begin, the thoroughly unhelpful error messages have returned, and Time Machine will not even launch. I have six weeks' worth of backup data on the Time Capsule which I cannot even access, and no further backups will go through. So basically, I have paid $300 for a more expensive version of the Airport Extreme, for all the functionality it has now.

Steer well clear of this product. It may sound like a good concept, and it is, but its actual performance is sketchy at best, catastrophic at worst. Spend your money elsewhere on backup solutions which actually do "just work".

Customer Review: Very easy setup
Summary: 5 Stars

I am surprised to see the number of reviews here indicating the Time Capsule was difficult to setup. I have a 24" iMac (Intel) with 70 gigs of data running Leopard. I just received my Time Capsule (500mb) a few days ago. I replaced my existing Airport Express with the Time Capsule. I was immediately surprised because it was pre-configured for DHCP, so my Internet worked with no configuration at all. I stepped through the wizard to set it up, which took about five minutes (giving it a name, password, etc). It then started backing up my data. The initial backup took about 24 hours to complete wirelessly. It did NOT affect the speed of my Internet at all however. In addition, Apple recommends performing the initial backup with the machine in the same room as the Time Capsule (if backing up wirelessly) for best performance. Because of my cable setup (the Time Capsule is actually on a different floor), I just let it run slowly - I didn't mind. All-in-all, it took about 5 minutes of my time to setup, plus time to unpack the device and plug it in of course! It's been running great behind the scenes ever since. This is a FANTASTIC product and truly a life saver for people that want to backup their photos, music and files - but can never find the time.
