Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Time Capsule MB276LL/A (AirPort Extreme Plus 500 GB Storage)Customer Review: The Best Way to Backup a Mac Laptop Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using Time Machine since I upgraded to Leopard. While Time Machine is great for backing up my iMac, its a pain to have to hook up my Mac Book Pro and new Mac Book Air to an external hard drive. The Time Capsule is great for that. So long as my laptop is open and running, a backup can happen.
Make sure you remember to do your first backup using ethernet. Otherwise it is going to be slow. Apple does not want to bog down your network with backups, so when you are backing up wirelessly, it will intentionally throttle the connection sped.
This device also functions as a wireless router. I was able to remove my previous Air Port Extreme from the network. The large size is nice because you are able to share one large drive and backup several smaller computers. My iMac and laptop all backup just fine.
The device does run a little hot. The Best Way to Backup a Mac Laptop
Customer Review: Not worth the apple tax Summary: 2 Stars
My experience with this product is based on using Windows XP operating system.
I bought this router because I needed an external hard drive and a new wireless router. Having set up several wireless networks in the past I was enticed by Apple's claim that setup was a breeze. In the past I had headaches and spent way more time than I wanted to getting things to work correctly.
Unfortunately this time was no different. When I tried calling Apple they did not have support open. When I tried using the online system it told me my product was out of warranty even though I had just received it that day.
I would recommend that any Windows user go with a less expensive router and get an external hard drive separately as the price for this product did not justify the performance. The only good thing about this product is that the backup folder is easy to use once it is setup.
Customer Review: My only Apple disappointment Summary: 1 Stars
This is the first apple product I have ever bought that was a disappointment -- big time. The problem is that it will not work. I keep getting the dreaded "disk will not mount" message that means that it will not do a back up. I have spent hours working on this including time spent with the very nice folks at apple service. They were great, but could not fix the problem. I now need to invest a few more hours that I would prefer to spend on productive work. I have owned computers for 25 years, so while not an expert, I know a little bit about them. What is particularly galling is that this problem has been going on for a long time. Just google "Disk will not mount time machine" and you will find messages going back for years. Shame on apple! In fairness, I have friends who own the product and are very pleased with it, so it is a roll of the dice. I would not buy another and would not recommend it.
Customer Review: Hard to make fit with an existing network infrastructure Summary: 2 Stars
I expect that if you have just one Mac connected to the Internet then this is a fine product. However, if you already have a mature network setup with multiple devices connected and you do not wish to disturb your environment then it seems unnecessarily difficult to connect this device to your network. The Time Capsule configuration seems to be obsessed with setting up a wireless network. I've had my capsule for 24 hours and so far only one of the two Macs I'm backing up to it have backed up successfully. I have had to reboot my wireless access point several times since I put the infernal Time Capsule on my network. While over time I might migrate network functions to Time Capsule (wireless network provision, printer sharing) I really do not want to have to completely re-configure my entire network just to use Time Machine. At the moment I am 50/50 over whether or not to return this box to the store.
Customer Review: Works great once you get it going. Summary: 4 Stars
After waiting a month or so for it to arrive, I finally got to try it out. Out of the box, it worked fine with my current AirPort Express setup (I originally tried TC as a client). But software said a Firmware update was available, which I ran. It didn't come back on-line. After about 30 minutes of trying everything and resetting it a dozen times, I decided to remove the AirPort Express from the network and put new TC in its place. Worked great after that. Don't know if I will need the 2nd station for WDS or not - because range seems fine right now.
Network speeds are fast. Disk is easy to write to. Acts just like any other hard disk, protectable by password. I am not using as back up exactly, but more like file server and base station.
Very elegant design and love the fact that I can plug in hub for multiple printers, as well as additional USB hard drive.
