Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano 1G, 2G (Old Version)Customer Review: A Must-Have!!! ***** Summary: 5 Stars
The Nike+iPod system is great. The product works perfectly and as advertised, though it would be even better with heartrate and autopause. Looking forward, the downfall I see coming is that the battery is not user replaceable, but the unit is inexpensive enough that the point is moot, considering a Lithium battery in that size and power would be at least 1/3 or 1/2 the cost of the whole system. It would be nice, though, if EITHER the battery were user-replaceable OR the sensor could be purchased as a stand-alone. They at least need a recycling program for all the receivers.
For those having difficulty getting the system to sync, I have a LOT of wireless devices (i.e. interference) at home, and mine has never had trouble syncing right away. There is a small power button on the unit - anyone with difficulty should make sure the device is on. When I purchased mine, the salesperson warned that he sees many get returned simply because people 1) don't follow the directions or 2) get curious enough about the little "on/off" switch on the sensor. (The switch is used to save battery life if you are going to keep in in your shoe when not running or when you are traveling by plane with your shoes).
You do not have to have the Nike shoes to use this device, though I am running with the Air Max 180's and they feel great. You can attach the device on a pouch or even in your shoelaces as shown elsewhere on the web.
I love being able to hear the positive feedback on the progress of my runs, and that has really helped me to meet & exceed my distance and time goals. This is absolutely a great way to get in shape! This is a must-have for anyone who runs whether 1 mile or 26.
Customer Review: Very cool! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, this is the most fun I've had with my nano, as well as the most motivating gadget I've bought for running. It's not expensive and yet really makes it fun for us running geeks who like gadgets or just like to keep good records of our walks or runs.
When you sync your iPod, your data goes to a Nike website that you can log into and create your own account. From there, it automatically uses your uploaded data to create a running (or walking) record. It's like a running log, only better. You have instant graphs of your totals (time and distance, daily-weekly-monthly, etc.), you can even set goals and earn virtual medals or trophies when you reach them, and you can invite friends and strangers to challenges, both individual and team. I've participated in several challenges and it's really neat to see others from all of the world get involved. It's a real running community.
But, best of all, even if you aren't interested in anything like that - if you don't want to track your mileage online - the sensor system motivates you. When I have a personal best for the mile, I might hear Lance Armstrong's voice congratulating me, or another famous athlete like Paula Radcliffe. Also, you can press the center button on your iPod at any time and get your current "stats" such as pace, time, distance, etc. It'll also count down or up your mileage as you run, letting you know that you only have a half mile to go, for instance.
Feeling tired and unmotivated? You can also select a Power Song - which you can hear at any time by with the press of a button. Very helpful for that last "push" at the end of a workout.
A great product. I love mine. Thanks Nike!
Customer Review: Nike Sports Kit Summary: 4 Stars
I'm a runner that was starting to get serious about time, pace, heart rate and actual distances i was running and was looking into something to help me keep track of all of it. I was looking at the Garmin Forerunners but gasped at the price knowing that it was probably worth it all but I couldn't afford it. The Nike Sports kit was an answer to my prayers! It did everything but the heart rate which is quite ok in terms that the transmitter and transceiver were only $28!
Some Pros.
The way the Nike Sport keeps track of your overall time, current pace at the moment, gives you average pace at the end and gives you voiced data when you are running by hitting the center button and mileage/kilometer completion at marked points. Totally compact and usable straight out of the box definitely made it a selling point for me.
Some Cons.
The calibration options of the Kit has never worked for me. I've tried and tried and my results change every time. The best is just to nix all of that and use the preprogrammed things. Basic, Distance, Time, etc. and don't worry about calibration. Also every once in a while it will lock up my Nano and all of the music is extremely soft. I think a recent upgrade packet fixed it but if it happens just soft reset the Nano and things should be back to normal. And maybe because I have an older Nano but it drains my battery life extremely fast. I don't know how Lance ran a marathon with it and it lasted the whole 2+ hours.
Overall a good product that works and plays as hard as you do.
Good luck to all you runners out there! Keep pressing on!
Customer Review: Nike+++ Summary: 5 Stars
The Nike+ website is only for the USA and U.K. right now. Nike+ will work for other countries, but you won't be able to compare your results to others in your area.
I thought the Nike+ thing worked very well right out of the box. For the Ipod Nano only. I needed something to get my 10 minute miles down to 7+ minutes and the Nike+ will help do that. Walkers can also use the Nike+.
I carry my iPod Nano (with rubber case) in one hand and my keys in the other. I would prefer the iPod Shuffle for running, but the Nano with Nike+ is my preferred choice now.
9/9/06 edit:
Get the Marware case for this to work with any shoe.

I love my Nike+ I GPS calibrated (ran with GPS and Nike+) mine out to a mile to have it more accurate. Out of the box mine was fairly accurate (+/- 100meters off per mile at most and it was random) If you want more accuracy GPS it out to 5miles or more. Maybe it's off 10 meters a mile max now = works very well.
For some reason the music volume on my iPod Nano is way down (Apple update maybe). The audio of the Nike commentator is way loud = like the old audio could. The difference in volume will surprise/scare you every mile/km.
Customer Review: Good but not Great Summary: 4 Stars
I've had this product for awhile, but not until recently have I started using it.
It tracks all your information on the ipod/itunes and also sends up to the Nike+ site for you can view it, work on your goals and also your challenges. It gives you some pretty cool graphical feedback, where you slowed down, where you sped up.
You can also buy certain songs/playlists that work just with the nano and this kit, giving you extra voice prompts and such, which are pretty cool.
The reason this didn't get 5 stars, is because it is just a simple device. It's a pedometere/accelerometer. This basically means you have to calibrate it to a certain stride length. If your stride changes, goes shorter or longer your distance/pace/calories/everything will be off. Generally this all averages out over the run so you aren't going to be off all that much. You can't also fault the device either, to add gps or major tracking like that would make this cost 5-10x as much.
The value is there and it's a great device, you just need to be aware of some of the shortcomings, which probably will not even effect most people, and if it does, it's not that big of a deal if your runs are off 5%.
