Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3GCustomer Review: Very poor battery life, but otherwise nice Summary: 1 Stars
I got my Nike iPod kit in April 2007. By November 2007 the battery was dead in the sensor. I recorded a total of 30 runs (although I probably used it on more like 40), so maybe I used it once or twice a week. It was certainly not being used extensively. I'm quite upset that the battery is not replaceable especially since it only worked for about 7 months. It would probably add a quarter or much less to the cost of manufacturing to make the battery replaceable. I might have been able to get it replaced under warranty, but I tried to pry the case open myself to see if I could replace the battery. The glue they used to hold the case together is like epoxy and the case was destroyed in the process. I'm not even considering buying a replacement sensor when they want so much money for it. The Nike iPod worked great when it worked, but the utter failing of the device is the non-replaceable battery in the sensor unit. I can't recommend this product to anyone unless they don't mind buying a new sensor every year or less.
Customer Review: OMG, A MUST HAVE for anyone who excersises Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this item when I first got into excersising about 2 years ago. I walked and did the precore at the gym and weights. So needless to say I didn't get much use out of it, (doesn't register on precore). But recently I started walking 10 miles once a week and wanted to see how long it took and how far I went. It worked really well.
Then last month I have decided to run a half marathon. So I have been on the tread mill and occasionally remembering to turn the program on when I ran. THEN LAST NIGHT I made myself run for 30 minutes on the treadmill. The machine said I went 2.20 miles at about 14 minutes a mile. Frustrating.
Then I looked at my Ipod and it tracked me at 3.03 miles @ 9.46 A MILE!!!!!!!!! WHAT A DIFFERENCE FROM THE TREADMILL!
So if you want accurate results and a good ego boost, go buy this item ASAP.
If you don't have the Nike shoes not a problem, they sell little pouches for the sensor to fit in, then you put on your shoe laces.
Customer Review: Great until the battery dies! Summary: 3 Stars
I loved this product for the first month or so. I run alot but am not that bothered about exact (to the second) timing/pace/distance etc) as long as I am with 1/2 a mile which this seemed to be very consistantly.
I enjoyed the tracking features on Nike web site, it gave me new motivation to see all the nice graphs etc.
BUT THEN one day a flashing icon on my ipod said the sensors battery was low. You can not replace the battery in the Sensor so I wrote to Nike since I only had about 50 hours of use on it. They said not our problem call Apple!. Took a long time to find out how to get a hold of Apple and in doing so found several formums with people experiencing the same prob. Finally got a hold of Apple, they said wither dens it in and we'll try to fix it and you should get it back with in about 2 weeks or go to an apple store (closest is about 1 1/2 hrs away!). Not what I had hoped as a resolution, but I intend to get it replaced and see if the next one works for longer.
Customer Review: A glorified pedometer? Summary: 4 Stars
After reading a few articles that state that this kit can be used with both Nike and non-Nike shoes (using a pouch that clips onto the laces), I tried it with my Mizunos. I calibrated it on a treadmill, and it seemed to be pretty accurate there compared to the treadmill odometer. So far so good.
However, when I went out to run on the street where my pace and stride vary quite a bit, it was less accurate. The problem seems to be that when I speed up, my stride lengthens but the Pod doesn't account for that. So it shows me going slower when I'm actually going faster.
I spoke to a guy at a Nike trailer at a race who indicated that the accelerometer in the sensor doesn't work properly in the little pouch on top, but would give much more accurate results if it were in the sole of a Nike shoe. My trail shoes will need replacing soon. If I can find a Nike shoe with a wide enough toe box, I may give them a try and write with more results at a later time.
Customer Review: Love this product Summary: 5 Stars
I love this product sooooo much. It has increased my excitement about fitness. It really helped start exercising a lot more. I did have a problem with accuracy on the first one I purchased, but Apple was very good about exchanging the product for me. However, those of you who are really having a problem, check and see if the sensor is upside down in your shoe. Also, you don't have to get the nike shoe ... you can jsut get a pouch. This is a great solution for me since I already had a great pair of running shoes.
Also, the website is a big part of my enthusiasm for this product. It does have some problems when it comes to adding your runs to your challenges, plus it can be really slow. Despite this, the online challenges, goals and resolutions really force you to get off the couch and run. Especially if you have a competitive nature.
My only complaint is that it doesn't work with all ipod models, but I guess you can't have it all.
