Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, iPod touch 1G, 2G, 3G (OLD VERSION)Customer Review: It's like communism... Summary: 2 Stars
...great in theory, not so great in practice. Did a 13+ mile run today. When I hit the "stop workout" my iPod reset itself. Run was lost. This is the second time in the past two months that I lost a long run. Because the Nike site doesn't let you manually input data (owing to competitions, I think, among runners), I'm unable to track these two runs.
I like the idea of the Sport Kit, but given that tracking runs is the basic purpose of this device and it has only done this with limited success, I can't say I'm totally thrilled. (Additionally, I recently had to spend over an hour on the phone with tech support because my device would not synch to the Nike site.)
Having been a devoted consumer of all things Apple and Nike for 20+ years, I expect this device to work 100% of the time. It hasn't, which makes it extra frustrating because I'm such a big fan of both these companies. Don't know if there are better options on the market - probably not - but I can't recommend this wholeheartedly like I expected to when I first received it off my wish list.
Customer Review: Good Enough: Tall people beware Summary: 3 Stars
This product is really a gateway drug. It gets you interested in tracking your runs, and you eventually want to upgrade to a more accurate systems such as the GPS watches.
I loved that this product provides:
Spoken Feed Back
Easy Interface
Power Songs
Pretty Accurate at the calibrated pace.
My only issue with this system is that when I run faster this system really becomes inaccurate. As a taller person (6'5") my stride really increases when I pick up the speed. When this happens the system doesn't seem able to account for the extra distance covered. So for example one slow loop around the neighborhood can register as 2.25 miles while the same exact loop at a faster pace can register at 2.0 miles. My guess is that this is the case with all accelerometer based running tools. Calibrating multiple times didn't seem to resolve this issue. The approximations have been good enough for me though for the last couple of years and I would definitely recommend this product to anyone interested.
Customer Review: Very happy Summary: 4 Stars
I use this with the Marware pouch so I can keep using my New Balances. There is an accuracy issue. But I don't think it's the fault of the Marware pouch or the sensor. I think its inherent in any kind of pedometer or accelerometer. Changes in terrain, changes in weather, physical condition are all going to vary on a long run and especially day to day. These changes are going to affect your stride and hence the devices accuracy.
I messed around with calibrating it and got it to be just a few paces off per mile on a flat paved course. But it was about 2% off on city streets. And 4% off on rolling hills. Also, remember that on a long course - like a marathon - a 4% error is going to be a mile.
The tradeoff of accuracy for convenience is something i can live with. I love the website Nike has and I actually have found it to be a great motivator. I can't tell you how many times I have made myself go out and get in another run or a few more miles so I could meet my goal and get another one of those virtual trophies.
Customer Review: Not for long distances, very unreliable Summary: 1 Stars
I have purchased two of these over the last two years, and I am utterly disappointed in its performance. Most recently, I used it to run the Nike Women's Half in October 2008. I did the run virtually, and the Nike+ was so inaccurate that it took me 16 miles in order to reach the Half Marathon goal (I ran at a forest preserve, so I knew the mileage I was actually running). I had calibrated it the week before, knowing that my first one was notoriously unreliable.
I do not run in Nike shoes, so I used the Shoe Pouch (also available here at Amazon). The device worked well enough for distances under 4 miles, but the longer the distance, the worse it performed. I cannot describe how devastating it was to reach mile 12 of my half marathon, only to hear the Nike+ log me at 32 minutes/mile!
The Nike+ Web site is very cool, and I loved the encouragement and graphic training history, but the device is just so awful that I am willing to forfeit all of it. I am saving up for a Garmin.
Customer Review: Motivator! Summary: 5 Stars
Aloha,
I'm a 52 yr old grandma and loving every minute of it! I don't run but I love to walk. As long as there are no steep hills, I can walk for miles enjoying the Hawaiian weather. My son encouraged me to enter the inaugural Kaua'i Marathon and after a few days of weighing the pros and cons, I signed up to walk the 1/2 marathon!
My son and daughter-in-law love their nike+ipod kit and encouraged me to get one, so i did!! I love it, love it, love it. I've set goals and challenges and my Nike+Ipod holds me accountable and motivates me to wake each morning at 5am to train. When I first started training I thought there was no way that I would make it to the finish line in the allowed 7 hours. On July 3, 2009 I walked 7.55 miles in just under 2 hours and reset my goal! Now I'm confident that I'm going to finish the 1/2 marathon under 4 hours!! Woohoo!! Thank you Nike+Ipod for being my Motivator!
