Customer Review: Proprietary system motivated by greed

This DisplayPort to DVI adaptor does what it's made to do. That might seem like an endorsement given to a 5-star product, and you'd be right, if what the product did was essential or necessary. Unfortunately, this device (and it's exorbitant price tag!) only exist because of Apple's greed. I hate proprietary systems. They create problems like the need for an entire section of phone chargers because every phone has its own connector type! When technologies are new, this is unavoidable because the dog-fight between similarly functioning techs hasn't been won yet (think Blue Ray vs. HD DVD) and only once that battle is settled does standardization take place. That is the sort of thing that is frustrating (especially if you adopted the non-winning tech!) but understandable.
What is not understandable and has no value to the consumer is when a company like Apple INVENTS a new proprietary system simply so they can sell overpriced accessories like this DisplayPort to DVI converter. What was wrong with the standard DVI connector on previous macbook pros, or for that matter, the original miniDVI to DVI connection on macbooks? Was the creation of this new connector motivated by a need or simply by greed? I'd argue that it's the latter, since Apple has frequently profiteered by selling worthless and unnecessary adapters for all their proprietary systems.
Apple, you make fine computers and software, but this is the sort of loyalty killing treatment that ultimately is going to tarnish your golden reputation. If you want to create useless, redundant systems, go right ahead, but don't charge 100x the cost of the parts in your cable. Otherwise you'll prove yourself no better than Monster Cables selling HDMI cables at a 3000% markup.
All that said, this cable will allow you to connect your 13 inch macbook pro to your DVI monitor. It will also gauge you in the process.
