Customer Review: Perhaps the least reliable device ever produced by Apple

Apple has a reputation for making hardware that works reliably for a long time. This adaptor is an exception. If you have a Mac Book, you might want to pick up a spare adaptor. My first one quit working 5 days after the warranty expired. The replacement for it lasted less than a week. My third one (purchased through Amazon) is working but it is only day 3. Despite some reviews here to the contrary, the device sold here by Amazon is the genuine Apple product.
This device is either very poorly designed or uses inferior electrical components. It is a huge disservice to Apple's reputation to distribute computers with a power adapter this unreliable. They should be recalled and replaced with a reliable substitute free of charge. With no moving parts to speak of, there is little wear and tear. Thus, the components must be pretty poor.

I received my replacement power adapter from Nextop2100. It has the Apple logo and part numbers; it looks like OEM device to me.
It came in three parts: the square adapter, the small AC "rabbit" plug, and an AC wired plug. The wired plug is shorter than the original I got with my MacBook and it lacks the fitted connector to the adapter. Instead it's just a generic power cable which looks weird. This was a replacement and my original power cable works OK, so it's not a big deal to me. HOWEVER, if you are buying this so keep an adapter in a second location be aware that is aesthetically unappealing.
(This is my third(!) power adapter. I use it at home, gently. Apple should be ashamed that this basic part fails so often. I guess the replacement cost is a necessary evil of owning a MacBook.)

I just bought my 2nd Adaptor in 3 years after the 2nd one also failed on me. I am therefore now on my 3 adapter (all authentic Apple accessories) in 3 years! The previous 2 went up in smoke and the smelling of burning cables. They both failed around the 1 year mark and from reading other mac user reviews online, it appears they have a life span of around 1 year. I just bought the 85W version and hope I have better luck with it this time around, however I am not really optimistic since the design appears to be the same as the 60W version, with the end of the cable which attaches to the port in the laptop failing and causing the wires to burn out. I have a 1-year warranty, so I am hoping it at least fails while I am not traveling overseas and before the warranty expire.Customer Review: Defective and overpriced power adapter

I bought my daughter a Mac notebook and its power adapter lasted only for her first semester in college. I was shocked to find out that the replacement price is over $80.00 - this is a power adapter Steve Jobs and I can't believe Apple is trying to make a big profit on this item! Anyway, in a couple of days I have an appointment with a Genius at the Apple store - it does take time to return defective items to Apple as I found out today! That's a wonderful set up - no wonder there are no return lines at Apple after the Holidays! You have to make an appointment with a Genius to do that! Hope my children see Apple for what it is becoming! Anyway, I'll keep you posted on how the Genius at Apple handles this matter.

Customer Review: This is the original adapter that came with macbook--they are just flawed by design

I love apple and I will keep apple products even though this adapter creates quite a problem. I didn't know, until I replaced mine, how common the problem was. Luckily I purchased the extended warranty so even if I have to replace it every year, apple will do it for free the first 3 years.
But it puzzles me why they can't create a better adaptor, especially at this price. Which is why I gave it two stars: high price and will only last about 1 year. But, you don't have any other choices right now so you have to just bight the bullet or leave apple macbooks alone.
If you purchase from amazon you will get a genuine apple adaptor, i can't say the same from any storefront--I always treat them as buyer beware.
