This cable says it is for the iMac. Most internet sources say you need a mini DVI adapter to attach a second monitor to an Intel core duo iMac. Even Apple's own web site says this. However if, like me, you have a 24" core duo iMac (the brand new version as of May 2009) this cable will NOT work - you need a Mini DisplayPort output adapter instead. This is the same adapter that is used when connecting an extra monitor to an existing Mac cinema display monitor. Why this is not made more clear on Apple's own web site is beyond me - they are still selling comparable mini DVI adapters for the iMac. It's only when you read down the iMac spec sheet that you see it is a Mini DisplayPort output on the newest iMac (look under the heading Graphics and Support here: http://www.apple.com/imac/specs.html)
Description of Apple M9321G/B Mini-DVI to DVI Adapter
The Apple Mini-DVI to DVI adapter is designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), MacBook, and 12-inch PowerBook G4. Connect the adapter to the Mini-DVI port of the computer and the DVI end of the adapter to an external DVI monitor or projector. You can also use it in combination with the optional Apple DVI to ADC Adapter to connect your computer to an older display with an ADC connector.
