Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Extra Portable 65W Power Adapter (for iBook and PowerBook G4)

Customer Review: "New" from Smart Parts USA is NOT retail boxed
Summary: 4 Stars

***NOTE ON BUYING FROM Smart Parts USA***
I suspect they are selling refurbished power supplies for $42. How else could they be half price? I bought one, and it arrived without a retail box, and without the 3-prong extension cord, which is supposed to come in the $80 retail box. It was wrapped in bubble wrap and there were several factory inspection stickers on the power supply, including two large yellow triangle stickers marked "QA PASSED". To me, this smacks of being factory refurbished. I contacted Smart Parts USA and this was their response: "the adapter is brand new, it came in bulk packaging and was therefore cheaper than identical adapters offered from Apple's online store or Amazon directly." Personally I don't find this convincing, but in any case at basically 50% off retail I got what I paid for, and it seems to work well enough to keep. It includes the clear plastic dome that protects the tip of the computer end of the connection, and the two-prong wall wart adapter ONLY - not the three-prong extension cord, and no box or warranty card, etc. The "fit" of the connection to my Powerbook was only about 75% good - in some positions the ring light does not illuminate, making me rotate the plug just slightly until it finds a better spot. My original Apple adapter never did this. But this does seem to be the genuine Apple part, so if you're willing to accept the possibility that it might be refurbished, this is probably the best deal going.

About the item in general:

The AC adapter that came with my Powerbook G4 suddenly stopped working, I examined it and found the plastic housing around the cord had melted at the end near the power supply. When I flexed the cable it would spark, sometimes I could wiggle it around enough to supply power, but clearly this was a bad situation. I looked at many third party adapters to replace it, and in the end I decided what I really wanted was the same old Apple one. The green / orange status indicator on the ring, which basically all aftermarket adapters are lacking, is convenient for checking the charging status while the lid is closed. Plus, all the aftermarket power supplies seemed ugly, boxy, clunky, not grounded, etc. Staying OEM seemed better for the resale value, although at this point it's looking like I'll keep this Powerbook until it falls apart or until the PowerPC architecture is completely abandoned, whichever comes first.

I used to use a very particular method to wrap the power supply cords, which was to wrap the long 3-prong extension cord around the body of the power supply first, and then wrap the thinner computer cable around the extension cable in the perpendicular direction, tucking the end of the thin cable underneath a few wraps, which held the whole package together pretty securely. But after the cord failed, I think in retrospect this wrapping method put too much stress on the thinner cable near the point where it enters the power supply. In the future I will only loosely coil the thinner cable, not wrap it tightly around the power supply, and then keep the whole mess inside a small pouch for neatness.

On the plus side, this adapter uses a slightly thicker gauge cable on the computer connection (seems to be identical to my girlfriend's MacBook MagSafe cables) than my original unit, so maybe this one will last a little longer.

Description of Apple Extra Portable 65W Power Adapter (for iBook and PowerBook G4)

The Apple Portable Power Adapter is the perfect traveling companion. The adapter has a clever design which allows the DC cable to be wound neatly around itself for easy cable storage. An AC cord is provided with the adapter for maximum cord length, while the AC wall adapter (also provided) gives users an even easier and more compact way to travel. Designed to fit in the palm of your hand, the new power adapter is as innovative as the product it serves.
