Customer Review: Great Keyboard.. for a PC
Summary: 5 Stars

I havent read all of the customer reviews for this product, but I am sure that this will be one of only a few reviews for this keyboard as it relates to it being used on a Windows 7 based PC.

This keyboard is everything I hoped it would be and more. It is very compact, durable and sleek. But, it is also very comfortable and easy to use. Bottom line, this is probably the best keyboard I've ever purchased and used.

I did some research before I bought the keyboard, knowing that I wouldnt be using it on a Mac and wanted to figure out if there were any issues associated with compatibility/functionability issues with a Windows OS or non-Apple hardware. While I came across some good reading and some hybrid software that is supposed to fully unlock the keyboard and make all of the keys functional for a Windows-based PC, I was led to believe that the keyboard wouldnt work properly before windows completely finished its boot sequence or without the aid of that hybrid software. That information was wrong.

This keyboard works like a charm and didnt need any additional software downloads to make it fully functional with my computer. It works fine at the initial pc startup, so using it to set up your BIOS or when first installing windows isnt a problem.

I know that I am in the minority with it's use, but this keyboard is wonderful and will satisfy anyone looking to purchase one, whether or not its going to be used on a Mac. This probably isnt the review Apple had in mind when they made this product, but then again, maybe it is.

Customer Review: Much improved, but...
Summary: 4 Stars

It took me several days to get used to the new keyboard from Apple, but I have to say that it's a pleasure to type on compared to the old clunker. Light, short throw keys have increased my typing speed and decreased necessary keystroke pressure. On the old keyboards, I felt like I had to punch them down, but this new design is effortless - so much so that for a couple days I was making all kinds of errors. But once I lightened up, speed and accuracy went way up, and finger fatigue went way down. Overall, a much improved experience.

There are only two drawbacks that I see - first is the caps lock key, which, because it's so easy to touch, takes a more deliberate tap to engage. I think it's intentionally not quite as sensitive as the rest of the keys - to prevent accidental SHOUTING - and that takes some getting used to. Secondly, I'm still not quite used to the re-arranged function keys - the volume, disk eject and iTunes control keys are in different spots, and I still have to look to see where they are when I use them - that'll solve itself in time, though. I don't miss the tilt feature at all - tilting the BACK of the keyboard UP was always a mistake, from a comfort point of view, so the lower profile, flatter layout is actually a big improvement.

The only thing I have to wait and see on is how durable this thing is, and how well it resists all my efforts to sandwich crumb and coffee drip it to death (the usual fate of my keyboards). And one sad note: where's the apple logo on the Command key? I hope they bring that back.

Customer Review: Responsive and well designed
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a bit afraid that since it was so similar to some laptop keyboards I had used, it would be a big disappointment. Fortunately, I was wrong. It has a very similar feel to the old keyboard from the iBook G4, one of the best laptop keyboards I have ever used. It is quiet but the feedback is still very good since the scissor switches bounce back against your fingers. Nothing will ever match the feedback of the old clicky keyboards, but this comes close-- and it keeps the finger travel to a minimum which is a great help to people who have to type many hours a day. As someone dealing with a repetitive stress injury in my arm, I've tried many keyboards in order to keep the pain at a minimum and this one has been the one that has caused the least stress to my fingers and wrists.

I've been using it for almost a year now and I even replaced my other keyboard (Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000, also a great keyboard) with this one because I just had less pain. I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for a laptop keyboard kind of feel on your desktop or if you're having trouble with RSI. There are other keyboards that might reduce RSI pain as well, but they tend to be much more expensive and not necessarily that much better.

It's not a split keyboard, but I haven't found that to be a deal-breaker at all. Because the keys are completely flat, there is no real reason to have to hit the key in the center so you can curve your hand as much or as little as you want as long as the key goes down.

In short, highly recommended.

Customer Review: Beautiful but impractical
Summary: 2 Stars

This beautiful Apple keyboard came with my new almunium iMac. To be fair, this piece of rubbish is far prettier than the piece of garbage it's meant to replace. No doubt, this keyboard is lovely to look at but it's not quite practical. Although I use my Mac mainly for design, I do have to type a fair bit and the keys are simply not responsive enough to allow rapid typing.

As other users have mentioned, too many keystrokes do not register and a lot of time is wasted backspacing to correct inadvertent typos. This was never an issue with my old Macally ICEKEY keyboard. It's physically and mentally tiring to have to slow down and mash on each key to register a proper strike. Another issue that's been raised is the flimsiness of the spacebar. Mine feels like it belongs on a different keyboard as it has a completely different touch from all the other keys, making a loud, plasticky clack with every hit. If any key goes bust in the near future, I fully expect it to be the spacebar. Also, couldn't the keyboard have been raised to a slightly more ergonomic incline?

I stuck with the Apple keyboard for a couple of months but then decided I didn't really want to 'get used' to its inherent deficiencies.

I've had to switch back to my ICEKEY, which is still the most functional and pleasing keyboard I've used with any of my Macs.

Apple, what's the problem? Your peripherals grow more vapid with each 'upgrade'.

Customer Review: Top notch keyboard
Summary: 5 Stars

Apple has produced what I think is its best and fastest keyboard ever. The minimalist style and beauty are undeniable, but the real treat is how great it feels beneath your fingers. I learned touch typing back in high school many years ago, and I type at least 30 words per minute and faster when I'm on a roll. The short throw (push-down distance) of the keys allows me to type very fast and accurately using relatively little pressure, so typing isn't as tiring for long data entry or writing as on earlier mechanical switch keyboards.

I tried typing on Apple's previous model keyboard recently and it felt like I had to push the keys down about 2-3 times the distance as the aluminum keyboard. It was very uncomfortable after getting used to this keyboard, and I'd never go back. The aluminum keyboard is also much quieter, even when typing furiously, as compared to the older model. This is great for office cubicles or classroom environments where there are a lot of people in a small space.

Pros: Fast, accurate typing; elegant design and great looks; easy to type on for long periods due to short throw electronic switches; very low noise; comfortable; includes numeric keypad.

Cons: None significant.

Highly recommended for all data entry, and the included numeric keypad is a must for any large amount of numerical data entry. I just wish the wireless keyboard came in a version with the number keypad.
