Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Airport ExpressCustomer Review: Very disappointing - do not buy Summary: 1 StarsI own a Linksys router and IBM laptop. The setup of the Airport Express to well over 90 minutes and was incredibly frustrating.
The installation CD and application are pretty bare bones, as are the written instructions. The setup process consisted of several hard resets of the Airport Express, my wireless router and my computer. There are TONS of websites offering solutions to the litany of problems you'll encounter during the install. My favorite solution is the recommendation to connect using an Ethernet cable.
When I finally got it up and running, I came to learn that music streaming to my stereo skips! I stopped all web browsing and all other computer activity to see if it was a bandwith issue, and still, the music skipped. (By the way, my computer, wireless router and Airport Express are all within 30 feet of each other--not a signal issue.) And to top it off, it caused my computer to BLUE SCREEN twice in 20 minutes!!!
All-in-all, quite disappointing and frustrating. If your goal is to extend your music to your stereo, I recommend buying a really long 3.5mm audio cable/component cables.
Customer Review: Brand new already with problems Summary: 1 StarsTerrible, terrible product. I have been an Apple user for five years and this is the first product I have disliked. I have only been using this for five days and have had trouble every day. By the end of a few hours of use the network disappears completely until the next day. The AirTunes was great, but the disappearing network makes this impossible (of course) to use. I am returning this now.
Customer Review: CAUTION NON-TECHIES: Setting this up might not be easy! Summary: 3 StarsAirport Express might me a fine wireless syetem for streaming music into multiple rooms from your PC but be warned:
There are multiple reasons why a system like this won't work and most of them are user error. This was likely the reason why I couldn't get it all to work together.
The Airport Express is marketed as easy to set up. This is not true! After several hours of trying to get these to work with my window's PC and virtually no helpful on screen messages to guide me through a good install and configure I gave up and took them back to the store for a refund.
Unless you are a computer tech, or happen to get lucky and have a trouble free install, you might have considerable trouble getting these configured properly.
My main gripe is that these are marketed as "easy to install" and it's just not true. I hope this helps someone who is running a windows PC and considering investing time and money into the Aiport Express.
Customer Review: airport express review Summary: 5 StarsThe set-up was a little difficult, as the instruction manual is not completely clear for somebody "special" like myself. You need to connect the AP express to your router with an ethernet cord first to program it, and then you place it where you need it (to run wireless).
However, once set-up to run on my existing wireless network, this device is really cool. I essentially got this to stream itunes from my PC in the office to our stereo in the living room. I love it.
Please note, this does not come with any cords. You will need to purchase them seperately (either a mini-to-RCA left/right audio cable or a mini-to-optical digital Toslink audio cable)
Customer Review: Expanded Wireless System in House instantly Summary: 5 StarsWe have an Apple Time Machine hooked up to the big computer in the basement and a floating laptop. The problem was that the laptop couldn't be used upstairs on the other end of the house. I didn't want to get another cable modem so I tried getting an airport express. It did take a bit of tinkering, even though Apple makes things very easy, to get this set up into our wireless network. I had to reset the time machine and the AE and start over a few times with adding this AE to that wireless network) via the software that comes with it, but I eventually got it working- the problem might have been someone taking it out of the outlet like the wife or kids, but I don't want to repeat it to find out. You can just plug this into ANY outlet in your house if you have a base station already set up and run the software - bango- you can expand your network. You don't even have to put any cords into this AE for it to work. Not exactly idiot proof, but if you have even a modicum of computer experience you can figure out how to add this to your wireless system. Thank God for Apple Computers. Once you go Mac you'll never go back to PC.
