Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Airport Express MB321LL/A [NEWEST VERSION]Customer Review: Awesome solution for a stubborn problem! Summary: 5 Stars
Kudos once again to Apple! I live in a condo development where I am competing against several nearby networks for bandwidth and airwaves. While my Airport Extreme Base Station was efficient at what it is designed to do, no router could have conquered the issue that occasionally would degrade my signal strength while using my iPad in the family room. My Airport Extreme is in my office, and due to logistics, could not place it high enough up on a shelf for optimal range.
So, as a result of my research, I concluded a great solution would be to simply pop for the $99 and get the Express to use as a range extender. It works perfectly and now I enjoy a solid signal at all times and I'm ruling the airwaves! I had no problem with set up but since I was tentative in one area I DID call Apple; they responded right away with a dedicated network specialist and helped me conclude set up and it took less than 5 minutes. Just plug it in midway to any AC outlet between your listening area and where your Airport Extreme Base station resides and you're in business. Solid piece of engineering once again by Apple.
Customer Review: USB Printing Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased the Airport to replace an older Buffalo wireless router with the plan to incorporate centralized wireless USB printing through the router. As a wireless router it was easy to setup and provides a stable and strong signal to both my PC and Apple based laptops.
As for wireless printing, it has been a long and ultimately unsuccessful process. My HP printer has always worked flawlessly through my Macbook/Leopard laptop with no need for fuss or frustration. The Airport Express apparently does not have the capability to work with printers like mine (HP 3845) even though the printer works fine when plugged directly into my MacBook's USB port.
This was most definately not a case of "it just works". Given my expectations for centralized printing this has been a disappointing purchase.
I am hoping future software/firmware updates from Apple will correct this problem and meet the standard "of it just works" for all printers currently supported by Leopard. In the meantime I will continue using this router for it's other excellent wireless capabilities.
Customer Review: Great for music Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this to get music wirelessly from my computer into my bedroom. One of the reviewers on this site had some great advice for getting it setup for windows and it worked without a hitch.
I initially bought it to work with iTunes on my computer and I wanted to control it with the Apple "Remote" software app on my iPhone. That works great, but I was thinking I also wanted to get Rhapsody from my computer to my bedroom and wasn't sure how to do it. I ended up downloading a $25 program called Airfoil that is supposed to work with just about any audio program. I tested it with Rhapsody and it works like a charm.
The main downside is that you can't control Rhapsody with the "remote" software. However, I now have an iPad, so I use logmein to get to the computer and control Rhapsody and Airfoil. It works great!
I should also mention that I bought a mini to optical adapter to get the digital line out to feed a DAC (digital to analog converter) and it works without a hitch. In short, for music it does exactly what I wanted for a very decent price.
Customer Review: Another fantastic Apple product -- It just WORKS!! Summary: 5 Stars
I love this product!!
I bought it to connect my ITUNES on my PC via Ethernet cable (in my case)to my stereo system. It works flawlessly!!! I can now also control my ITUNES on my PC with a free Apple application for my IPHONE, called REMOTE. So now I can sit in front of my stereo away from my computer, have my music go over my ethernet cable (home lan) to the stereo and control my ITUNES music with my IPHONE, wirelessly. Is that a kick!!! And the whole thing works FLAWLESSLY!! Thank you Apple.
I loved this device so much that I bought a second one to use while traveling and in a hotel room. I plug it into the room's ethernet jack in the wall and I can now use my laptop wirelessly. I don't have to plug the laptop into the ethernet jack allowing me to use my laptop anywhere in the room.
Only slight disadvantage is that the setup instructions are a little obscure. Once you get it though, it becomes easy. There are excellent instructions also posted in one of these reviews. Do not hesitate to get this device, though.
Customer Review: Windows Vista setup a cinch Summary: 5 Stars
I had an older Airport Express for four years: it died. The new AX "n" model is great. I use it to link iTunes to my stereo through my wireless network. I have a Vista Home Premium laptop with iTunes. Setup was easy.
The CD that comes with the new model has a setup.exe file that installed the Airport Utility on my laptop. I plugged in the AX, plugged the stereo into it, connected to the laptop via Ethernet and ran the Utility. It detected the AX quickly. The setup options offered were easy to figure. You do have to specify that you will use the AX on wireless, not Ethernet. In my case, I "joined an existing wireless network". I specified the IP address (got that from by router) and selected WPA2-Personal security and entered the password. Done. There are some bells and whistles you can configure as well, but basically, it's easy setup. Not quite Plug and Play, but easy if you have some savvy and read the prompts.
If you want to use AX as a router, it's different. The device is pre-configured for that use, so setup may be even easier.
