Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Airport Express MB321LL/A [NEWEST VERSION]

Customer Review: Such a handy device, for a variety of uses!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had two Airport Express routers for quite some time and love the versatility of this product. One of them I use as a remote AirTunes wireless speaker output for iTunes. (With some 3rd party software, I can actually send any audio from my Mac to the remote speakers).

I also have one that I take with me when I travel. If I'm in a hotel without good wireless Internet, but with good wired access, I simply use the Airport Express to create my own wireless LAN in the hotel room. That way I can connect my laptop and my iPod Touch to the internet through the same connection, have it be secure the way I want it, and have a much stronger signal than most hotels are providing anyway.

I've also used this as a temporary replacement for my Xbox 360 wireless adapter when the Xbox adapter died, since the Airport Express can be used as a wireless client rather than as a router. It can also be used to make any printer a wireless connected printer, or it can be used to extend the range of a wireless network.

So, to sum up:
Portable wireless router
iTunes remote speaker
A wireless NIC, in a pinch
Share a printer
Extend a wireless network's range

It might seem a bit expensive but it has come in so handy so many times in different situations, that it has more than been worth the price paid.

Customer Review: Streaming Internet radio with Airport Express
Summary: 4 Stars

I got this mainly for the purpose of wirelessly transmitting streaming Internet radio, such as Pandora or Last.fm, to my stereo. My computer (desktop Mac) is in one room and my home stereo is in the living room, and I like to listen to Internet radio but not always at my computer. Cabling directly from the computer to the stereo wasn't really a good option - it would have taken about 40 feet of wiring to go up and over doors, along baseboards, etc. The Airport Express mates beautifully with my Mac's existing Airport network (computer and Time Capsule), and a short stretch of cable (Phono mini to 2 RCA plugs into the stereo receiver) makes the final connection. It took a few tries to get the wireless network set up right, but I probably could have done it much faster if I actually followed the directions. The wireless stream seems to work pretty much flawlessly - of course, the streaming Internet sometimes has its hiccups thanks to Time Warner's crappy service. Streaming iTunes to the stereo from the computer is perfect (though of course I could do that just by plugging the iPod directly into the stereo). Aiport Express is a simple and elegant solution. I don't know if I could have done the same thing less expensively with another wireless router, but this works so well with the Mac that the $99 is definitely worth the ease and simplicity.

Customer Review: What a wonderful gadget!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Airport Express is an invaluable item one can have if you want to stream your iTunes music into your stereo system. I love it and I yet have to find anything wrong with the Express.

I have been using the Express since July of this year. It was a good thing that I found a review on how to set it up because my PC is not connected wirelessly to my router. You need a computer with wireless capabilties to initially detect it in your network. After that initial step, everything went smoothly.

You can only stream the music that is in your iTunes library. To have ultimate control of your music, you gotta have the iPhone or iPod Touch with the Remote application installed. Of course if you don't have either items, you can just create a playlist and let it play.

I can stream my music into my stereo in my room while my main PC is in the living room about 50 feet away. I do not seem to detect any quality loss when a song is streamed versus playing it on my PC.

I can't believe I waited and thought about it for almost a year before buying it. I feel that for it's price, you get a great deal. The other alternative is the much much more expensive Sonos equipment. I think for my purpose of single room streaming, the airport express is a big win. Go ahead and get it. You won't be disappointed.

Customer Review: I wish zero stars were an option
Summary: 1 Stars

got one for xmas.
It crashes all the time, the music is choppy, it's generally a disaster.
Called the apple support - nice folks but basically told me that (a) this works if one knows what he's doing (b) this is likely to work, it's probably my PC that doesn't and (c) my networking questions about windows are too much in Windows territory.

Are you kidding me?

1) I have a phd in computer science - I work with computers - I think I know what I'm doing. But that's not the point. The point is that that's just the wrong attitude to have. I don't know why folks think that apple makes easy to use products. That's BS.

2) These guys are some arrogant folks - assuming their stuff always works is stupid, and by the way, it turns out modern networks are complicate deals, so if your device doesn't work naturally with them you have a bad product.

3) I think the attitude "we're apple so we can't really tell you much about your windows box" is plain dumb - turns out you sell this piece of junk for Windows too.

In any case - i've lost way too much time on this piece of junk and will return it. It's too bad, I had great hopes and, theoretically, this looks like a great piece of hardware and there's not much like it around, but...

Customer Review: PERFECT!
Summary: 5 Stars

While it DID take 2 tries to get the configuration set up for this little gem, once I did, it's worked absolutely PERFECTLY for me. I use it primarily for connecting iTunes to my home stereo system, but a side-perk is the RJ45 jack in the unit which ALSO allows me to connect my X-BOX (in the same cabinet) to my wireless network. BONUS!

I used to have an RF transmitter/receiver designed specifically for MusicMatch, but when they were bought up (and subsequently destroyed) by Yahoo!, I switched to iTunes. The sound quality and consistency with this unit is unmatched. Most likely due to it actually sending signals over the WLAN, which allows for buffering, rather than just sending a radio signal.

If you're worried about 'range', don't be.. it's part of your WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network), so as long as it's plugged in within range, and other computers are within range, it'll be fine. I power up iTunes on my laptop and take it outside, upstairs... anywhere in my WLAN range, and the music never faulters.

Best thing is, you can use more than one of these... and connect one at a time, or any combination of all of them AT THE SAME TIME to your iTunes session... pumping music through ALL your stereos!

Highly recommend this little gem.
