Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station MB053LL/A [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Apple Airport Extreme Base Station Summary: 3 Stars
The item was shipped from Amazon. It arrived, plugged it in, followed instructions, and never got light to come on (green)indicating that is was operational. I called Amazon and Apple, was told had to take it to an Apple "genius" in an Apple Store to verify it was inoperative to get a new one. Had to make appointment to see "genius", no appts until following day. So my time, multiple phone calls, my gas money to get replacement. Amazon should have authorized return to them overnight and sent me one next day! Intolerable!
Also not intuitive how to set up a windows pc to operate through this router, especially getting a network printer to operate from windows pc. Had to download another program (Bonjour) from Apple to accomplish this......another phone call to Apple.
Operationally, once got a functional unit, and once all pcs and macs connected wirelessly, worked fine. Good reception all over my house, but not exceptional. My linksys with 802B had better coverage than this 802N unit.
Customer Review: reliable signal and easy to set up! Summary: 4 Stars
I have used about 5 different wireless routers (Linksys, Trendnet, SMC, Dlink, Netgear) so far and this is by far the most reliable. I have 4 computers in my apartment and it's a mixed PC and Mac environment. One PC and one Mac are hooked up via cables and two other Macs are on wireless. The set up took about 15min (mostly spent loading the CD software onto my computer - I used my PC for the setup), and the connection has not gone down once in 2 weeks. The design is simple and clean - no external antenna, so it's not obtrusive - I had it in my living room and it looks great beside my TV (since I have cable modem, I had to put the router by my TV to share the same cable line). The router also updates itself automatically which is a nice feature to have. I am very happy with the product. The only reason that I didn't give it a 5-star is the price. Routers are becoming a commodity and I am not convinced that an Apple Router is worth the $100 price premium over other similar products.
Customer Review: I have an Apple addiction Summary: 5 Stars
Let me just start by saying that I am completely bias on Apple products. I have a MacBook Pro. I have talked family members into buying Apple's. I have convinced people where I work to get Apple machines for video purposes. The reason I keep doing this is because the products just work.
I bought the Airport and had it up and running in less than 5 min. I went in and did some tweaking of course, but total time was still less than 30 min.
The Airport had a firmware update which I was alerted to from Apple's Software Update. That was downloaded and installed quickly. The router rebooted and I was good to go. Services which didn't work before between my computer and MacBook ( Such as iTunes sharing ) started to work. My MacBook no longer has issues joining my wireless network after waking up, and I have great range.
I say if you don't have a router, don't waste your money on something cheaper. You get what you pay for.
Customer Review: Great speed and range Summary: 5 Stars
I replaced a D-link "b" network with this Draft-N version from Apple. I can only compare to my previous wireless network but this Apple appears to have similar speed to the wired connection via cable modem and definitely more range without dead zones. It functions exactly how I had hoped. Set up was reasonable for a wireless network. I had all information from my ISP available that the set up requested. Currently I am utilizing an IMac and PC desktop with a wired connection and a MacBook and PC laptop with a wireless connection and all 4 work online flawlessly. There are directions for MAC and PC. The provided software does seem to require newer versions of Apple or Windows to fully utilize this base. I have an older version of Windows which seems to be limiting the ability of network sharing between computers. I also have not utilized the USB port but I'm hoping that will not be dependent on the version of the software. The only drawback is the price.
Customer Review: Apple Airport = Garbage! Summary: 1 Stars
I bought a new MacBook over the summer and thought that since I upgraded my computer, I should upgrade my router. After all, why wouldn't an Apple product work with another Apple product? The Airport Extreme is awful!!! I had to play around with it for at least 20 minutes per day to even connect to the internet, and once I would connect, it would drop the signal - several times over a 10 minute period. If I walked away from my computer for even 5 minutes, I had to go through the drama of restarting the Airport and the modem and the computer. I had my ISP tech crew over to my house several times because I was CONVINCED that my difficulties couldn't be caused by the Airport. It had to be the internet connections. Wrong! Enough is enough. I went out to a store and bought a different router, which I am happy to report downloads internet pages quicker and with less drama than with the Airport.
Anyone interested in purchasing my old Airport??
