Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station MB053LL/A [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Great in theory..... Summary: 2 Stars
...but in reality it is a headache to administer. If you are buying this router for the ability to attach a hard drive through the USB feature then don't bother. Looking through the Apple forums you will see that everyone seems to have problems with an attached USB hard drive.
My experience has frustrated me to no end! I switched to Macs over a year ago and this product is the only one that I have purchased that really doesn't work as advertised.
First, the router is too expensive. Especially with the new routers that Apple has recently announced with a built in hard drive. Even then, I would wait to see how the attached drive performs.
If you must have a router now then look elsewhere. Otherwise, wait for a firmware upgrade or wait to see how the new Apple routers perform.
Customer Review: Great as usual! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had the router almost a year. I use it with a Nintendo Wii, Macbook and several other devices including a G1 phone, Sony PSP, Ipod Touch and several non Mac computers. The router has NEVER, repeat NEVER needed a reboot. It runs in mixed mode to support N/B/G wireless connections and is FAST. There are VERY few configuration settings that you need to tweak, which was almost disappointing at first, but very typical of Apple. Like most products from Cupertino, it is as close to plug and play as a router can get. The router's connection works throughout the house, basement and guest house as well as when sitting in a car parked on the street. On a typical night, this router is handling World of Warcraft, a movie on Hulu, surfing on the G1 and god only knows what else on the rest of the devices all at the same time, flawlessly.
Customer Review: So Far, So Good Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this unit because of how easy Apple products are to set up. I have a brand new Dell 1720 w/Vista and the network connected right away...I know nothing about setting up networks...but with a little computer intuition, I got through it. Connecting my WD 500GB External Drive was another story, but this is because Apple doesn't mention that external drives MUST be formated as FAT32 and NOT NTFS, which my drive was. Since the Extreme wasn't recognizing my external drive as NTFS, I had to transfer all my file to the laptop, and then reformat the WD drive as FAT32, but only after downloading some software from WD to get it back to a single FAT32 drive. I wish Apple would state that the Extreme will not recognize NTFS to begin with. Other than that, it's great, fast and nice looking.
Customer Review: Finally caved and bought this after many others Summary: 5 Stars
I simply could not bring myself to pay the extra for this router. I continuously had issues with the routers that I tried requiring frequent restarts. The one that came with FIOS (restarted once a week), dlink (restarted at least once a month), and Netgear (do these work longer than 3 months). So far it has been 6 months, and this thing is rock solid. I have restarted it 2 times and one was for an update. After initial positive experience, I pushed it and added an external hard drive for Time Machine backups. From my reading, I expected this to cause issues. To my surprise, it still just worked well. Backups just worked well.
In short, this has been a great experience, and I am more likely to get another Apple Wireless router because it is easy to setup and just works well.
Customer Review: Plug and Not Play Summary: 1 Stars
I spent a highly unrewarding hour of my life trying to get the thing to work with my garden variety MacBook. I think I ran the utility set up program five times. Each time the computer and the AirPort recognized each other and each time I was unable to connect to my DSL. No amount of changing of settings helped. It would not even pass the DSL by ethernet to my desk top. So I went back to my $49.95 Linksys router which worked as well as it ever did. Apple used to have the reputation of being "Plug and Play". I suspect that they have forgotten that in their quest to have every feature and the fastest performance. I took it back today. The reviews I have read online seem to be either fabulous or terrible and I unfortunately am in the latter group. If I could give no stars, I would.
