Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station MB053LL/A [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Great Product Summary: 5 Stars
Having just moved into a larger house with three floors, I was concerned that my existing Airport Express wouldn't do the job that it did in my previous bungalow. I upgraded to the AirPort Extreme Base Station and have been quite happy with the decision. And now I can use the Express for AirTunes as originally intended. I haven't set up my HDD with the base station yet, but that's coming soon.
Set up was very simple. It took far less time to set up my wireless network than it did to configure the modem for DSL. In a short time, I was connected with WAP2 encryption and a hidden network (to keep all those WiFi "borrowers" off my high bandwidth network). The option to dial down the transmission range will help that, but that'll be for another day when I have more time to fine tune my desired network radius.
bottom line: another easy to use, and easy to look at, Apple product.

Junk on intel Macs

SHAME SHAME SHAME ON APPLE WITH THIS FLUB!
I am typing this review on my living room floor with the ethernet cable swapped from the back of the Tivo box and into my MB Pro to the Airport Extreme. Thats how confident I am that it will stay wirelessly connect to either my new Intel macs. It, or they, won't stay wirelessly connected. EVER.
When you spend double on an over marketed Apple product that whose generic equivalent you could purchase at Fry's for half the cost, not to mention the wasted Sundays standing in line at the overcrowded Apple store for return, then Steve Jobs needs to have his Olympic Golf Course membership terminated, fire the wireless R&D team and demote everyone in quality control. Oh, and pay those Chinese workers a little more and they might not spend their off time selling fake Iphones on eBay.
Customer Review: Typical Apple Summary: 4 Stars
As of firmware version 7.3.2 (Jan 2009) this device works flawlessly. It configures itself almost automatically because of its suggested configurations. My setup consists of two wireless Macs, a wireless XP laptop, a wireless PS3, an uplink Netgear 1000Mb switch connected wired, and two AIX servers connected wired to the remaining two Ethernet ports. All devices connect without a hitch and have never shown instability. The power of the signal appears stellar in every corner of my 2900 sq ft ranch home.
My biggest complaint is one I've had since Apple released its Airport line: you must restart the thing for any change, whereas with many competing brands you may make a great deal of changes without restarting. I also would complain about paltry status monitoring; for example it takes quite a bit of looking to find a list of currently connected wireless devices.
Customer Review: Apple's router answer Summary: 3 Stars
Recently I had yet another Wireless router start to fail on me. Granted it was a cheapo belkin. I decided to try out the New Apple Airport Extreme. This brings me into the 802.11N world as well. Some of the highlights;
- 802.11 (a,b,g,n)
- I am glad to see the unit has Gig-E ports now. (although only 3 ports, I would like to see 4)
- The setup of the unit is very nice with the "Airport Utility" app. Instead of going through a poorly designed web app like much of the other wifi routers out there.
- I also like the fact that the unit is highly configurable.
- Port forwarding works well.
- Ability to choose subnet (192.168.1.x, 10.0.1.x,172.19.3.x)
- USB port for printers or HDD's (very rare to find in a wifi router)
Overall it's a great piece of hardware with great range and speed. Although kind of pricey, worth the money.
Customer Review: AWESOME Summary: 5 Stars
Man, this router is as advertised. I have had almost every type of router other than apple for the past 10 years with mixed results. With these old routers setup was frustrating and difficult (even smashing one in a fit of pure rage), signals were dropped, and lifespans were short.
However the AirPort Extreme was so easy to set up that after I was done I said, "Is that it?" Within 15 minutes it was out of the box and broadcasting my new, secure wireless network. We have a variety of wireless devices in our home and all are working perfectly. Plus it has a great warranty and friends I have talked to who have apple wireless routers have said they are still going strong many years later.
In addition to my new iPhone, the AirPort Extreme is another example of why traditional PC users like me are converting to apple products.
