Customer Review: Simple setup. Good bet for the price.

This device easily and seamlessly switches between three HDMI inputs, without power and usually without any user action. It does not need to be plugged into AC, needs no additional parts or adapters, and the included remote is needed only in circumstances you may never encounter. But be aware: spotty quality control makes an exchange guarantee essential for this product.
I needed something to simplify my entertainment setup and stop the constant cable-switching that ultimately led to a broken HDMI cable. I also needed something that wouldn't bust my budget. For the price, this device looked like a reasonable gamble in spite of several poor reviews.
The first Switcher I received worked for about 5 minutes. Then all I got from any of the inputs was a screen full of static. I promptly set up a return through Amazon's Online Customer Service. The online site didn't offer a replacement, so I called and was able to get the replacement ordered in minutes.
The second Switcher has functioned flawlessly since I first plugged it in. The three inputs enter on one side and the ouput attaches to the other side; I would prefer if the connectors were all on the same side of the box. The IR receiver eye (for the remote) plugs in on the third side, along with an input for an AC adapter that purportedly will allow the device to amplify the signal. I haven't tried this function, as the picture is perfect as is. The blue LED input indicator is very bright. Placing the Switcher behind other equipment should minimize the impact, and the remote eye has a long enough cord to do this.
Automatic input selection is based on the principle that if you turn an attached device on, you must want to view it. When power is applied at any of the HDMI inputs, the device switches to that input, and when power is removed, the previous input is restored. Since some devices power up the HDMI port several seconds before presenting output, there may be a brief period of silent, black screen at the display device immediately following the switch.
If you have one input device that is always ON, that won't be a problem, but if you have two such devices then the Switcher will not be able to determine which one you want to watch. You can always use the remote or the buttons on the Switcher to change inputs without turning off a device (for example, to pause a BD movie and watch the weather report on the other input).
I would give the Switcher 5 stars based solely on the performance of the replacement unit. Buyer, do not hesitate to get a replacement if the device does not perform as expected, and I would not recommend purchasing this product without a solid satisfaction guarantee.
Description of Apogee HDMI 3x1 Mini Switcher
The 3x1 HDMI mini switcher routes high definition video (in multiple resolutions up to 1080p) and digital audio from any one of the three sources to display unit. Three inputs accommodate the simultaneous connection of up to three high definition video sources, such as satellite systems and HD DVD players. The output sends the high definition audio/video signals to a high definition display. Aside from the manual switching, the switching can also done via the IR remote that is provided with the unit for added convenience.
