Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Antec MX-100 3.5-Inch USB Aluminum Enclosure for SATA Hard Drive

Customer Review: SATA HD enclosure - looks great works great
Summary: 5 Stars

For looks this black and silver sleek external enclosure cannot be beaten. It's like Batman's hard drive! The dark brushed metal and slimline electronic visage compliment any desktop, and you also feel like there some money spent on ensuring that the internals are as pro as the externals too. The bright glowing white logo which flashes as your HD accesses the data does complete the look. Overall very statisfied with the appearance. Now just from a safety standpoint, I would have liked to have a wider set of wings on the footprint - but that's probably due to my clumsy butt bumping into my desk too often... and you can always lie the unit flat if you wish.

I put in a 500GB OEM SATA drive into it and the first thing I loved was it just shoved in, so no fiddling with wiring or connectors; it slid right at home. Maybe this is common with SATA HD externals but as this is my first SATA enclosure I loved the ease of use. I had to connect an extra wire but this was simply for the front HD light (the batman type logo) and was zero problems to connect.

XP recognized the drive straight away - didn't need the mini CD included and I had initialized and formatted the drive within a few minutes.

So whilst the HD is tightly packed in there and there's no fan the unit it looks great, and for the price I'll take it. Very happy camper.

Customer Review: Faulty and Antiquated
Summary: 1 Stars

So, I got this enclosure for my 1 TB hard drive from my old computer when I bought it since I already had two hard drives in the new one. I figured making my old hard drive an external would make things a bit easier to manage.

I was wrong.

I've had external hard drives before. They are simple to use, very little software if any is required, and they are very mobile and durable, with no moving pieces that can crash together or break apart. I thought that getting an enclosure would be very similar, and it may be, just not with this enclosure.

First, it says that it only operates with Windows 98...an OS that is over 10 years old! Then, it doesn't even recognize my hard drive. Better yet, I found that I had to hold the power switch in the back about halfway between on and off for it to actually stay on! What is up with that? To use this thing I would have to hold that switch perfectly still for the entire time? No thanks.

In short, use the money you might "save" by buying this enclosure and use it for a real external hard drive, or an enclosure that is actually supported on something more recent than a decade-old OS, and works when you get it.

Customer Review: does what it's supposed to do
Summary: 5 Stars

Trusted brand, sturdy build quality, firm connections (power plug is connected snuggly into the enclosure, as is the USB connector). not a big fan of brushed aluminum. if i had a spare SATA drive, i'd keep this with no regrets. unfortunately, this 3.5" sata enclosure (like many others) will not work on a WDTV HD Media player, which was my main reasoning for buying it in the first place. mind you, this is absolutely NO FAULT on Antec's side; i recently bought a 1.5TB drive to put in this enclosure and thusly hook up to the WDTV. the enclosure is recognized by any computer i hook it up to, but not by the WDTV media player. sadly this seems to be a limitation of what the media player was SUPPOSEDLY capable of.

if my plan was to simply hook up another SATA drive to my computer, i'd totally keep this enclosure... but since that's not my original intent, i'll be returning this one back to where i purchased it from.

TL;DR, great enclosure for standard storage expansion on a computer. DO NOT buy this if your plan was to purchase an enclosure kit + HDD to plug into a WDTV media player.

Customer Review: Antec Enclosure for my SATA Drive
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased a 500G SATA drive thinking I could install it into my Dell Inspriron 531 (with 500G already). After quite some time and some really good service over the phone with Dell, they told me my computer has a maximum internal drive capacity, of which, I was already at. They suggested using an enclosure and making my recent purchase a USB drive.

I found it on Amazon and ordered the enclosure. When it came it had simple but clear instructions, which I didn't really need. I assembed the drive into the enclosure. The only problem I had was that there is a power connecting wire that when I first tried to open the assembly so I could put my drive in, the wire seemed to be stuck. It took me a while to relize that they had put a small ammount of adhesive to hold it in place and that I had to free this up so I could slide the assembly out and install my drive. Once I figured that out it was a breeze.

After assembly it worked fine right off the bat, took a while to format the 500G dive, but now I can use it and have a terabyte of memory for my video editing.

Customer Review: Stopped working after 3 months
Summary: 1 Stars

Here follows the review, top part right after I got it, and bottom part when it failed. I ordered this in March, probably got it around the 15th or so.

Its silent, its elegant, does what it says it should, its gorgeous, it does not attract fingerprints thanks to its black matte finish, can operate vertical or horizontal: this thing is the works.
One small ding: the included screws to fasten the drive slide-out cage and the external casing itself are either too small or I have no screwdriver to properly fasten them. But they still fit in, but I can't get them to go fully in. But, I get speed, looks, and silence.

Recommended. (I'm using Win7 Beta, btw)

Edit: Stopped working between 7 and 15 June. Simply stopped wanting to copy any big files, would hang on copying of anything over 200 MB. In fact, it would hang if I decided to copy more than 200MB in one sitting, regardless of amounts of files.

POS imo, 1 star. Its disconnected at home, and got replaced by an Acer Aspire Easystore H340.
