This cable is simply amazing. As soon as the USB end of the AmazonBasics USB Cable is plugged into a running PC, both ends light up with a clear blue light. The glow is beautiful. It serves to let you know that the cable is plugged into the PC properly and that the PC is turned on. The lights in the cable ends go off as soon as the computer is shut down.
This is such a good idea that I wanted to know the origins of the invention. A search for US patents yielded a great many references. Two that were particularly relevant were "US 6921284 B2, Electrical Connector" by Sirichai et al., which features a USB connector having a transparent end containing an LED. There is also a published patent application, "US 2004/0042735 A1, Illuminant USB Cable" by Ma, which shows a cable that looks exactly like the Amazon cable. This application did not result in an issued patent. You can see these for yourself by going to Google Patents and entering the numbers or titles. There are many other related patents. Thus, as with more than a few inventions, it is possible to find patent references, but much more difficult to pin down the inventor.
By the way, the cable can also be used to connect devices to a computer.
