Although my old CaseMate screen protector still had some life in it, there was an ugly scratch and I figured now is as good a time as any to try something new, which is why I went with the AmazonBasics Anti-Glare Screen Protectors. Frankly, I thought that a screen protector was a screen protector was a screen protector. After testing this, I learned how wrong I was.
Inside the package is a cleaning cloth, a small bit of rectangular plastic, and the screen protectors. The microfibre cloth is for cleaning the phone's face of dust and oil before applying the protector and the small piece of plastic is to work out any air pockets as the protector goes down. That's the general process and for the most part, it went smoothly--except the part where you use the plastic to work out the air pockets.
The included tool was extremely thin and flexible which is not good. I actually had to chuck it and use my old CaseMate plastic tool to make sure the protector went down smoothly. But that's minor--any thick straight-edged material can work, so it's not a deal breaker. It's about the actual protector's performance.
Well, I've had the screen protector on for about three days and the edges have started lifting. It's not horrible, but it's noticeable, and I do believe if not for my iPhone case, the lifting would be worse. That says a lot because I was using my CaseMate screen protector for nearly six months with nary a bubble.
Then there is the actual quality of the protector--yes it does cut down on the glare, but at the cost of screen image quality. It's hard to describe, but when launching an app with a white or light-colored background, it's like you can see all the tiny rainbow dots. It's rather unbecoming of the typically gorgeous iPhone display quality. It reminds me of watching one of those old screen TV's that's on its last legs.
So, to sum up, if you're just looking for a basic screen protector, then this is adequate. If you want something with a little extra--say a sturdier tool and something that doesn't disturb the screen image quality--then you'll need to look elsewhere.
Edited to add: The instructions for application aren't as clear as they could be. Basically, it doesn't mention that there are actually *3* layers to the product in the application process: The first layer is protecting the adhesive, the second layer is the screen protector itself, and the third layer is just a thin film which needs to be peeled off and discarded.
At first, when I was trying to pull off the second tab--like the instructions said--I thought it meant the actual little tab in the upper corner, which I did and was mad that it left an ugly sticky rectangular mess. In reality, it was supposed to be pull the tab and allow it to peel off the thin discard-able layer. It may *look* like it's pulling off the screen protector, but it's not. Just a head's up.
